Play-by-Post Discussion

1 to 50 of 61 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

It's always good to have a spot for OOC discussion, questions, concerns, and ideas.

Male Human Paladin 1

Thanks again for putting this together. I think things are off to a great start. I love starting things off with a skill check, very nice.

I realize my character background is pretty non-existant atm. I'll try to work on something better, my characters are typically far more unique. However I was so focused on this new format of play, that I wanted to keep things simple this time around. I'll try to get something a bit more substantial to work into the story.

You're welcome.

It really isn't hard with some planning. Within a week I'm betting you'll be ready to run a module or AP too. ;)

This is possibly a silly question, but I have noticed other GM's have posted specific time limitations, but how long do we have between actions/posts?

I just posted Hadassah waking up for her watch. I don't want to rush Gill. I know he is in GMT +2 and I am in GMT-6 so it is only 8-9 PM there, so it is ver possible he has not had time to write anything up, but on the other hand I like to keep a feeling like things are moving, or story is developing. If it is inappropriate for me to have posted yet, I will remove the post, or delay it until some point in the future.

Thanks!

How can they do that? Since this is the web there are people all over the world in different time zones, with things they need to do. Setting a time limit seems a touch unfair. However, I will say this. If someone is 2-3 days late posting, I can step in and push things along.

Let's say, for example that a player is late posting on Tuesday. Wednesday comes along and there still isn't anything. Then Thursday is when I would take over and give a little push to keep things moving.

As for your post H., I don't want to say it's too soon. Remember, there is a sphere of influence that surrounds your character that you are in control of. As long as it's benign and has virtually no impact to what V. and G. are doing, posting now would be fine. However, I think it would be best not to interrupt posts involving rolls. Unless you would like H. to wake up and roll as well. Just remember that she needs sleep too.

And I think my Time zone is CST +6. I live in Wisconsin, the mid-west.

Male Human Druid 1

It should be a rare event that I'm not able to post each calendar day during the week at least. My plan is to do so on my lunch break, but that can get screwed around, like today in fact. So if not, it will be after the children get to bed, and that can be VERY unpredictable :)

Same time, feel free to charge ahead with developing your character across more frequent posts, we all can enjoy at our pace, too.

Male Human Paladin 1

I'm Pacific time, but I'm a software developer, so I'm at the computer all day anyway.

I've tried to prepare myself for a slower pace with people posting. If we can typically get a "round" in with everybody once a day, I think that is pretty solid.

I'm fascinated by this game format, because of its slow pace. Its amazing how much easier it is to spend some time on the small things like setting up camp and such.

Assuming there is eventually some combat, I'll be really interested to see how that flows.

Please feel free to give me any feedback on my play during this game. I'm open to any feedback, either on my bad RP, or writing or just about anything.

For now, I'm just hoping we survive the night!

I am an unemployed law school graduate waiting for bar results, so I spend most of the day cruising for job updates and what not. Montana (US) so Mountain time.

Male Human Paladin 1

Now that is a test I wouldn't want to have to wait for the results. Good luck!

yeah, only a 2 month wait. . . results Sept. 20 though, so almost there.

I'm a visual communicator, better known as a graphic designer. I work with the woman's football team in my area getting promotional things ready.

As for your RP'ing..you're doing fine. Combat is something of a pain because it takes a long time.

I have to say, I am not looking forward to combat. As a MS I will have 3 things rolling. Me, Persephone, and whatever I summon. I think I should do each separately in individual spoilers?

Those things would get their own initiative, wouldn't they?

From PFSRD on Summon Monster spells "This spell summons an extraplanar creature (typically an outsider, elemental, or magical beast native to another plane). It appears where you designate and acts immediately, on your turn. It attacks your opponents to the best of its ability. If you can communicate with the creature, you can direct it not to attack, to attack particular enemies, or to perform other actions. The spell conjures one of the creatures from the 1st Level list on Table: Summon Monster. You choose which kind of creature to summon, and you can choose a different one each time you cast the spell."

Found <<HERE>> (Emphasis added)
It appears that Summoned Monsters act on my turn innitiative.

Further, also from PFSRD on Eidolons, A summoner begins play with the ability to summon to his side a powerful outsider called an eidolon. The eidolon forms a link with the summoner, who, forever after, summons an aspect of the same creature. An eidolon has the same alignment as the summoner that calls it and can speak all of his languages. Eidolons are treated as summoned creatures, except that they are not sent back to their home plane until reduced to a number of negative hit points equal to or greater than their Constitution score. In addition, due to its tie to its summoner, an eidolon can touch and attack creatures warded by protection from evil and similar effects that prevent contact with summoned creatures."

Which would indicate that the Eidolon also acts on my initiative, however; I have always played that companions (such as a druid's animal companion) has its own initiative. I am not finding a specific ruling on this, however.

Before it comes up, I wanted to point out that the major difference between a summoner and anyone else's summoning is that whereas a Summon Monster Spell is a full round action (see above link), a Summoner's Summon Monster Spell Like Abillity is a Standard Action.

Found <<HERE>>

I think it would be simplest to have the Eidolon act on its own initiative, and whatever is summoned to act on Hadassah's initiative. I will leave all those points to you.

Male Human Paladin 1

Are there any particular tips to make combat as smooth as possible? For instance, should we wait to be asked to roll initiative, or do we throw that roll in there if we "think" we might be starting an encounter?

For attack rolls, I assume that we should just go ahead and roll damage right along with the attack, so we don't have to resolve that later if it hits.

Any formatting or combat preferences, just let me know!

I am leaning towards something like this:

Hadassah sights in on big bad evil doer and fires!

combat rolls:

Hadassah:
Standard action: Fire Crossbow: To Hit:1d20 ⇒ 11 Damage (1d6, Light Crossbow): 1d6 ⇒ 2
Move Action: Moves away from evil doer, preferably behind someone larger than she is, avoiding coming within his reach if possible.

Persephone:
Standard Action: Fire Crossbow: To Hit:1d20 ⇒ 13Damage:1d6 ⇒ 5
Move Action: Follows Hadassah, keeping out of reach of bad guy.

That looks very good H!

Male Human Druid 1

Computer game developer here, based in Copenhagen in Denmark. Nice to hear a little bit about the other players!

By the way, how do you all create your characters in a nice convenient format for posting to the forum? I used a trial online pathfinder pc builder, but no export functionality, so I'd be very grateful for any tips!

LOL

With notepad.

I can, if you'd like, take your starting stats and put them to a pdf.

Haha! More power to text editors. It's OK, thanks for the offer, I was just thinking for any future characters.

I use Hero Labs from Lone Wolf. If you send me the stats/feats/traits etc, I can use it to output them then paste them to a spoiler for you.

I think it is like 20-30 +50-60 for all the books, so really over priced unless you plan to play a lot. I just like it because it theoretically keeps me from messing up on feat selection and so on, and since the Summoner is one of the most often messed up character types, I like having something that double checks all my stuff.

I am a career student, I currently have bachelors in mathematics, liberal arts, focusing on decadent period french literature, and chemical dependency counseling. A couple months ago I completed my Jusris Doctor. Right now I cruise the web looking for attorney jobs while I wait for my Bar results to come back. I am considering entering a Master of Social Work program this fall.

I also have 5 kids, and am happily married.

You could be descended from Danes in that case :) We tend to spend a really long time in the education system, mostly because it's all free (almost all)

As a matter of fact, I am half Dane half Irish...

How is it so far? Any questions or concerns I can address, maybe change?

Male Human Druid 1

All very good from my side

Seems good to me

So I tried this once before. I dropped my internet connection and lost it all, so I will try again. This is why I should write in notepad and then copy and paste to post. So now you get the cliff's note version!

On Virgil's question about what to call himself as far as class, my local group (back when I had free time) used to follow the simple rule of "What would the commoner in the inn call you?" approach.

So chances are Clerics, Paladins, Monks, Bards, and Wizards (kinda) are known class names. Barbarian could easilly be a recognized descriptor, but it probably would evoke thoughts of "Eeek he is here to pillage!" rather than "he is a specialized fighter" So you would probably avoid walking into a bar and saying "Hey, I am a barbarian". Same with Inquisitors, because people avoid speaking to someone who might torture and kill them as heretics at any moment. Same with rogues, especially thief types.

However, Wizards, Sorcerers, Witches, Summoners and possibly Oracles are all Wizards by the following logic -> they cast spells, and they are not clerics, therefore wizards.

Fighters, Rangers, Cavaliers, Inquisitors, Barbarians,Non-kung-ku-monks etc. are probably what they do, as in Guide, Archer, Mercenary, Soldier, or Hunter.

Druids are a semi-secretish seeming organization, they even have their own secret language, so they probably don't go around proselytizing.

Rogues don't like being in jail. To avoid the headman's block, they probably don't announce themselves as thieves in the local tavern. However, bravado is amusing so they would probably call themselves fun things like "a wealth redistribution and reallocation specialist" or other fun title. . . Or they might simply lie and call themselves something like a locksmith.

I think it is safe to assume that when dealing with a group of PFS adventurers, (I think our party is likely not such a group) that the members would know what the classes were, and probably know some basic distinguishing factor of each. Beyond that, I think that the above guidelines are kinda easy.

Thoughts?

Yeah, I don't think anyone would call themselves a barbarian, unless it was to mock someone they had defeated or similar - "look at you, beaten by a mere barbarian". It's a (semi-)derogatory term applied to others.

The other option is to refer to where you come from, perhaps. If we take the historical example of the Romans, they considered the modern day French, Germans, British and Scandinavians as barbarians (amongst others!), but ask any of those people 'who are you?' and they would be a Gaul, a Tuton, a Cimbri, and so on. You might think that's a different kind of context, but it could also apply here - people would have an understanding of what a 'Northman' is considered to be, etc, and apply it well enough to make a judgment.

I wasn't quite clear what you thought about Druids, by the way. In this game I would probably just say 'I'm a woodsman' and leave it at that.

I was trying to say that way back in Unearthed Arcana, when druids were introduced, they were a secret society type organization. Although the secrecy has dissolved in recent evolutions of the Druid, they still maintain some level of secrecy as indicated by the fact they maintain a secret language. As such, although I think the average person would understand what was meant by Druid, I do not think a druid would identify themselves as such.

Coming back to this... (long shot) do you happen to know any Danish? Or Irish, for that matter :)

I know some curses, and a couple blessings, but that is all...

You may know that here in America many still claim something to their roots. It's almost like countries have suddenly become races. My parents went over to Ireland to see if they could find out where the family's name came from.

And sorry. I thought I had told you that I went on a camping trip. I told everyone else. Apparently, I forgot to tell you. :( My family went to a flea market. We hicks do that here in the midwest sometimes; we go to a giant garage sale and wade through everyone else's stuff to see what they've got and then buy it. My son scored some toys and a new hat. Because it was so hot with the direct sunlight we wanted to get my daughter a new hat, but there wasn't anything for girls that was appropriate. They either said something about being a b@~+~ or promiscuity, so we left there feeling bad for her. And very angry at society. My little girl should punch someone who calls her b%+!!, not feel that it's sassy. Eventually, we did find a visor for her with butterflies on it, which she adores! I am happy about that. And she was smiling so hard when she was on the ponies. There were pony rides and she had a blast. She even gave me a 'yee-haw!'

That's enough. I've written too much. Anyway, I know lots of Irish, but their Americans. So, are they really Irish?

Well, I meant that languages :) I should have said Gaelic, maybe

edit: welcome back, by the way. I just presumed it was the weekend and you were busy

Hi all --

Just wanted to let you know that I'm on vacation next week. I'll have my laptop and should still most likely be able to post, but if for some reason I'm delayed, continue to move the story along and I'll catch up to you in Falcon's Hollow!

Have a nice vacation! I'm enjoying this game, and personally I don't feel any need to rush along with the story. If you can't post or you are enjoying other vacation things too much ... :) ... I'm OK to wait until you are able to join us.

Yeah! That's great, we can slow down.

Same here. Just killing time this weekend. .
