What is the best class/function for a Strix?
I like the class alot but I cant seem to pin down an optimal build that utilizes that nifty flying speed.
Archery seems like an easy answer but i am hoping for something more creative.

Grand Lodge

Urban Barbarian Strix with Dervish Dance and Flyby attack would be quite powerful.
Dayguard is just an awesome alternate racial trait.

Archery is the best answer.

Spellcasting would also work, but casters can get flight super easy anyway and strix boosts no mental stats, so it's not terribly useful to those classes.

Melee in general is a terrible option, you're basically giving away your main benefit: being unreachable.

If you wanted to do melee, you'd want a reach weapon and Flyby Attack and the Vital Strike line or some other good use of a standard action. But there are no reach finesseable weapons in PF. You can spend like 3 feats to turn the whip into one, but that's 3 freaking feats, and it's STILL an incredibly subpar weapon at that point. You'd probably have to go str-based and not get much out of your racial stat bonus.

Grand Lodge

Agile whip wielding Strix Lore Warden would be strong.

A strix fighter gains access to flyby attack in words that bypass a simple ban on bestiary feats. Be a strix barbarian with the largest weapon available and enjoy your two standard actions a round for a couple vital strikes.

Grand Lodge

Banning feats from the bestiary would be a houserule.

i made a strix rogue with flyby attack and maxed stealth...got sneak attack on every single attack...

Grand Lodge

Strix Mindchemist sounds pretty heavy too.

Keep the ideas coming! I was thinking of something like the 3.5 raptorian uberdivers... any thoughts? Does anyone know of a mechanic that would allow a Strix Tetori to flyby and haul people up into the air and drop them to their doom? Cause that would be a fun grappler. max stealth. muhaha.

Making him a rogue with flyby attack and a garrote. You can swoop in, grab people up by the neck, and strangle/decapitate them high in the air. :P

Grand Lodge

Utilizing the various net feats an the Snag Net could be interesting.

Much as i hate the class (personal dislike :P) a Strix Gunslinger made as a sniper would be rather nasty, as would a Grenadier Alchemist. Also a Dawnflower Dervish fighter at 9th level can full attack and make a move action getting alot more out of the mobility it also stacks with thier Airborn Ambusher Archetype although not sure you'd want too.

Grand Lodge

I think the OP was trying to avoid ranged.

Well he said archery :P

Still fair enough the Dawnflower Dervish is still usable though :D

Grand Lodge

Well, if he did go ranged, I would suggest Musket Master Gunslinger.

I just realized, the Strix is the best to utilize the Boot Blade.

Ranged IS the specific benefit of being a flyer.

Well, it's a matter of taste.

Starfinder Superscriber

Of course if you're looking to be a buffer, a Strix bard wouldn't be horrible.

Grand Lodge

Strix is a key example of someone who should be able to manifest foot claws.
Perhaps a natural attack based barbarian?

I'm running a Strix ranger with 2 levels of fighter that uses a scythe a longbow and has flyby attack and cleave it does wonders for me

Strix Fighter(Mobile or Archer) isn't bad. Mobile especially given its Level 20 ability to Full-Attack as a Standard Action.

The only thing missing is Air Raid Sirens and/or someone yelling "Stuka, Stuka."

Though isn't there a Rogue Archetype that gives the Bombs in place of Sneak Attack? Or is that one of my Homebrewed Archetypes?

I don't think there is.

There's an Alchemist archetype that gives you Sneak Attack instead of Bombs, if that's what you mean.

Yeah, it is one of my Homebrewed Archetypes called the Sapper/Pioneer. It is surprisingly useful even with having weaker bombs than the Alchemist.

It is played up as being a Trap and CQB Specialist.

I'd play it. I'd have it set up that he can take Discoveries in place of Talents (but only ones pertaining to Bombs) too, is that the route you went? Or is he more trap focused with Bomb as a nice extra damage option?

They lose the sneak attack talents and instead can choose bomb discoveries as Rogue Talents.

The one thing we can't figure out is a good Capstone for them. We have plenty of options we just. Can't decide what is a good fit.

EDIT: Later on today I will be starting a Thread for my Homebrewed Archetypes. Already kinda have one for my races... ;P

Grand Lodge

Two-handed Fighter with the Fly-by-attack feat and a reach weapon.

Overhand chop and move.

Coolies, I might just stop by and take a gander at it.

Though my GM and I are still wondering what in the hell I'm gonna do with all the "backups" I have already.

8 levels of ninja with scout archetype so you get SA if moving 10 or more feet. 3 levels of two handed fighter for overhand chop. The rest whatever you like.

Vital strike feats of course and the other standard melee stuff. You will be zipping by hacking people in half in no time.

Grand Lodge

I would avoid Rogue, Ninja, and Monk.

I am curious as to why? I can not think of any better way to get more damage into a hit and run (or fly as the case is) build then the scout archetype.

Question: How are you taking the Scout archetype as a Ninja?

Winged characters with bows are sorta cliche, but that has a reason, it's just that good.
You're basically untouchable by anyone not able to fly, you can full attack every round, etc. At least in the first levels.

Fly is a 3rd level spell, so after 5th level you'll see fighters increasingly often have access to it and they actually are better at it than you (Good vs Average maneuverability).

Another concept you could try for is the winged character that swoops in, grabs an enemy, drags him off and drops him from great height, or over a cliff or something.
However, I have no idea if thats possible to do in PF or how that would be best done.

Alternate classes can take any archetype that their base class could as long as they have the abilities and features that need swapped out. Ninja has the abilities needed to swap so they can take scout.

Two-handed Fighter will add flat damage, and the Overhand Chop will allow x2 strength to the damage. Also, the full BAB will allow you to hit more often, and get more out of Power Attack.

Throw in the Fly-by-Attack and Death from Above feats, and mobile damage dealer you will be.

Another option is Barbarian for Pounce.

When did they clarify that?

Alternate Classes are just very extensive archetypes.

For the maximum amount of damage while taking advantage of your ability to fly, go with a Two Handed Fighter with a Reach Weapon, use Fly by Attack and Vital Strike. A Bardiche would be my weapon of choice.

I'm a big fan of Strix Rangers as well, due to the Favored Class bonus being a boost to your bond with your team. If planned out well, you can really boost the damage output of your entire party. You can also go 2-Handed with a Bardiche with this build, but you're going to have to be more careful with your feat selection.

From the last I heard an Alternate Class was treated as an Archetype that replaces the entire base class.

In a sense, yes.

Should a feat, or item, be exclusive to a Rogue, then a Ninja can use it.

Should a feat, or item, be exclusive to a Ninja, then a Rogue cannot use it.

This also means that Samurai, and Ninja, can take Rogue and Cavalier archetypes, but of course, the same rules for archetypes apply.

Hmm... From what I understood the ruling was the Ninja counted as replacing every feature of the Rogue. So they couldn't take the Scout or such archetypes.

I am just trying to figure this out. I would prefer for alternate classes to take their base classes' archetypes.

Grand Lodge

Some features remain, and thus, can be replaced/altered.

But has there been any official ruling?

Yes, but it will take me a bit to find the quote.

BRB making a Charge focused Barbarian/Scout Ninja

Evil. Almost as evil as my Archery/TWF focused Strix Barbarian(Urban)/Fighter(Mobile).

Grand Lodge

If going Barbarian, the Fly-by-Attack combined with Pounce is brutal.

Add in Death from Above so that you have a +5 on your attack rolls =)
