Help With a Mounted Barbarian

Advice

Liberty's Edge

Im joining a level 5 Pathfinder game, but I'm afraid the half-elf wild caller Synthesist I threw together is above the power level of the party to a noticeable degree. So I thought Id make a mounted barbarian instead. The party needs melee at the moment.

My Ability Scores- 18, 17, 16, 16, 16, 15 (I rolled really well)

I only have 5000 gp available for starting gold.

DM has a house-rule. You get +2 to an ability score of your choice every 4 levels instead of +1.

So, what race/feats/rage powers do you guys suggest for me to start with? I am going to be a Medium barbarian on a Large mount, already decided this. What mount is good to use? The Ferocious Mount rage power and the Mounted Fury archetype seem to encourage an aggressive mount with good Str and primary naturals, so a horse wouldn't work too well right?

Orc mounted fury.

Power attack and mounted combat for starters. I'm fond of the guarded life rage power. It has rescued me from death more than once. The leadership feat would allow you to use your cohort for a mount without having to buy new ones all the time, or it did in 3.5 anyways.

As an Orc, you have the Beast Rider, and Horde Charge feats available to you. This will sync well with the Mounted Fury archetype.

Liberty's Edge

I'm not sure my DM will allow me to play a full-blooded orc, but we'll see.

Any suggestions on a good mount? I was thinking either tiger or rhino...

Liberty's Edge

Horde Charge seems not good. I don't think there's a single orc or half-orc in the group, so I would havw no one to Teamwork with

Half-Orcs have access to all archetypes available to humans and orcs.

As for mount, tigers are natural attack machines, and I think rhinos have trample. So pick your poison.

I would personally suggest rhinoceros, just to make charging a little bit more fun. Speaking of which, Rhino Charge would be a nice feat to pick up if you happen to meet the prerequisites.

With those stats and that kind of boost when leveling, go halfling or gnome and rock the medium mount in the dungeons.

You can use the Mad Dog archetype from Animal Archive to get your choice of Druid ACs. This makes your mount very good on its own.

With those rolls, Halfling + Wolf or Roc/Dire Bat is just as good as taking a medium race and having to wait until 7 for a superior mount choices.

Edit: Reread the OP and saw that the game is level 5. Small race feedback still stands, but edited the post to remove references to sub-5 pain points.

Guys, 2 years old. I'm pretty sure he figured something out by now.
