Greetings, fellow travellers.

While doing some research for a certain fanzine, I discovered this site with a nice list of nautical terms, I thought I'd share with you:

Clicking takes you to the Age of Sail ship and ship building terminology site.

Ruyan.

Bookmarked! Excellent find!

Or try to get a hold on one of these

A Sea of Words, which adds correct interpretations to the entries and explains most shipboard proceedings rather well to the "landlubberly".

The above entry is nice, but there are some inconsistencies and errors... not that most people will notice^^

Same here! Thank you, RV - very useful site, and photos of some absolutely gorgeous ship models there as well.

Several extremely important nautical terms are missing from the list! I give you:

Yarrrr!!

Shiver me timbers!

Aye, matie!

Land lubber!

Ahoy!

Keel-haul!

Grog!

Hard to starboard!

Batten down the hatches!

And there's got to be a ton of other piratey terms I forgot. Help me out here! ;)

For all terms piratey (is that a word?) I highly recommend The Pirate Primer by George Choundas.

Not only does it tell you more than you will ever want to know about how-to-speak-like-a-pirate, but it also includes a great deal of information on things like ships, pirate punishments, food, drink, and many other related subjects. The book's "References" section also serves as a pretty good bibliograhy and filmography for most of the classic pirate films, novels and histories.

It's readily available online, and cheap - I got several copies for my players at $4.00 each, shipping included.

The Exchange

This page also has a lengthy list of piratical terms :)

The page above it, Pirates ARRR Us! may also be of interest.

I wanted to thank you for the Sea of Words recommendation. Mostly for general knowledge and english sea vocabulary!
