AOE Alchemist Build

What is a really good AOE damage alchemist build for PFS play?

Small race preferred.

Alchemical Allocation and Infusion required. (Will pair with a flowing monk so Alchemical Allocation / Greater Magic Fang potion is a must.)

So far I was thinking Gnome Pyromaniac, Grenadier Archetype (1/2 bomb per day for favored class bonus)

9 str
14 dex
14 con
17 int
13 wis
9 cha

Basic idea is the flowing monk partner wants to whirlwind trip, redirect, and otherwise control people to keep them together for bombs.

I'm not sure if the character should pump more int with cognatogen (mind chemist archetype?) and use mundane splash weapon when not bombing or focus on bombing and a longbow.

Plus the discoveries, there are just SO many good ones. Hard to narrow it all down.

Any advise/tips is much appreciated!

Well, for Feats and Discoveries you're likely looking at something like this:

1: Point Blank Shot
2: Precise Bombs
3: Precise Shot
4: Infusion
5: Extra Discovery (Acid Bombs, or something else for elemental damage that isn't Fire4, just in case)
6: Explosive Bomb
7: Rapid Shot (Or another Extra Discovery)
8: Fast Bombs
9: Rapid Shot (If you didn't grab it at 7th)

After that itt depends on what kind of effects you want on your bombs.

For stats, I'd probably go as follows:

Str 7
Dex 14
Con 16
Int 17
Wis 12
Cha 9

And all level-ups into Int.

Go with Mindchemist and Cognatogens, and use a Light Crossbow or splash weapons when you're not bombing.

For Traits i'd probably go Reactionary and Indomitable Faith, unless you really want a Class Skill (Stealth or Perception might be worth it), in which case I'd scrap Reactionary for it.


Sounds like good advice all the way around from Deadmanwalking. My alchemist goes through bombs so fast, I didn't even worry about Rapid Shot. Haste + iterative attacks was enough for me... and my DM come to think of it.

When you don't need the AOE, make sure you use Targeted Bomb Admixture... the damage adds up really fast!

This is a good point. Gnome does well with increasing your bombs per day, but AoE damage isn't great for an alchemist. Going half-orc won't satisfy your small race requirement, but you can take a bonus to Intelligence and get half your level to bomb damage. Putting that in perspective, the half-orc basically doubles your AoE damage (minus INT of course).


ARG has a goblin only discovery, rocket. Greatly extends range increment (50 ft) and doubles the size of the AoE in return for full round action to use (can't combine w/ fast bombs) and no one takes primary damage. Which...sucks normally. Combined with the stinking cloud discovery? Not too shabby.

Not sure if the ARG stuff will ever be allowed, though, don't play PFS myself.


Honestly in my mind bombs are about controlling the battlefield not doing damage.

the exception is force bombs that can let you beat down on a high DR high energy resist, high SR creatures that the rest of the party will have trouble with.

One of the first bombs types I look to pick up is tanglefoot bomb.
