Extent of Audits

PaizoCon General Discussion

Grand Lodge

As a local coordinator, I know that audits are sometimes necessary to ensure characters are complete and accurate. However, being PaizoCon, I'm sure most players throughout the convention will be audited. It's kind of expected, in my opinion.

However, I'm curious as to what extent that GMs are being asked to audit. I just moved, and a lot of my Pathfinder books are currently in boxes in randomly places that I don't have access to yet. Thankfully, I remembered to grab a few, but I'm afraid I may not have secured everything I needed for the convention.

For example, I have a fresh Tengu Inquisitor from a DunDraCon boon that I'm itching to play. I have my Bestiary and Advanced Race Guide, but I don't know where my APG currently is. Will I be told I can't play my PC without it? I certainly hope not, but you never know...

Just wanted to get an idea of what to expect before the con. Thanks.

I am not a Paizo Official, but is there a reason why printing the relavent rules off the PRD would not work assuming nobody in the group has an APG.

Grand Lodge

Well, I've heard stories of some GMs not allowing people to play certain classes from the APG without having their book, despite someone else at the table having one available. I was just curious if PaizoCon had an official stance for PFS games in terms of auditing and such.

Isn't the APG considered to be an assumed book? As in the GM is supposed to have it?

Grand Lodge

Nope. Only the Core Rulebook, the Pathfinder Society Field Guide, and the Guide to Organized Play are considered part of the "Core Assumptions" for players, and Bestiary 1 as well for GMs.

And as I've always understood, copies of additional resources are only required if there is a question at your table regarding your character. At my game store, I've always enforced that as long as a player understands the ins and outs of their PC, I won't ask them to see their Player's Companion or copy of Ultimate Combat. But, again, I've heard some horror stories lately of table auditing. And being PaizoCon, I wasn't sure how heavily this sort of thing was enforced, being my first trip and all.

I've also heard stories of moronic GMs being jerks. If you run into this at PaizoCon: 1) I'd be extremely surprised 2) go talk to Brock at HQ 3) If you can't find Brock, find me, and I'll come smack your GM around.

The only time a GM should care about you having the book is when you're using something they're unfamiliar with.

I totally agree, Kyle. Thank you, I feel reassured. I was just feeling a bit nervous about making this long trek and spending this money to come to PaizoCon, only to get shut down because of some overly-strict GMs.

Yeah, like them Bay Area hacks you sometimes play with, Sloth. ;)

Like Baird said, can't see it happening...even for you. You rock too much of Kasbah to be denied anyway, Sloth.

Find me and we will get it sorted out if this happens.

I'm not sure I agree with this Kyle.

Locally you, or your immediate family members are expected to have the book if you play the class - no exceptions. We don't "audit" character sheets regularly at all, but there's a significant difference between performing a chronicle to chronicle audit and saying "um, you're a summoner, you do have the APG, copy of the APG, or copy of the watermarked page, right?"

It's an assumption we make. You play a class from the APG, you have access to the APG. If you don't have access and yet some how manage to play the class flawlessly w/o needing to make a reference, I'm not going to question it.

If someone's playing a summoner and they ask to borrow a copy of the APG to look something up, they're going to get questioned. Kicked off my table? Probably not (unless it's Dragnmoon). Detailed character audit? Maybe.

You're ridiculous. I'm gonna have to talk so much trash over this coming weekend.

Feel the love. I mean, hate. :)

Along these lines, I assume my PDF versions of the required books on an iPad will be acceptable.

However, I am new to PFS (I have one chronicle sheet from PAX '11), but is it acceptable to use PDF copies of chronicle sheets on a tablet instead of the hard-copy? It would be nice to just have my iPad and current character sheet to carry around, (oh, and dice ...).

Thanks,
Ryan
