I have not, predominantly because I believe it is currently ongoing. The only thing preventing me from hopping aboard that and Parasyte is the fact that I can't watch the whole thing...

I feel that you are missing a great deal of social and historical context to the film, and thus are missing the implications and subtext.
As I noted, I hated the aunt. I came to the conclusions I did on my first viewing - my second simply affirmed them. I'm not interested in a third, and it's been a while; much later, I the Anime Abandon review this several years after my first exposure to the anime.
I think you'll find it enlightening. Here. Be warned: "Sage" is foul-mouthed, angry, and I don't always agree with his conclusions. I don't share his rage, and I don't hate Grave - I simply found it uncomfortable and frustrating, and the reasons why are echoed in said review.

Ah I see. I just really like all the mechanical stuff about it. Sword Art Online just kinda does whatever it wanted after awhile. And the fanservice stuff is a bit blech.

Psycho-pass and Parasyte for enjoying sci-fi anime. Really liking the excitement of parasyte, but much more interested in the world building and story of psycho-pass.
FINALLY FINISHED ALL OF MACROSS 7!!! INCLUDING THE 3 *EXTRA* EPISODES!!!
My first time watching the entire series uninterrupted in order. Amazing.
Next up is, of course, Macross Frontier. I still wish my store still existed, I would love to have both of the movies...Anything where
STill watching 08 MS Team. This is one of, if not my all time favorite, individual Gundam series. The opening and closing are wonderful, and the level of technology is what I prefer from Gundam. Not that I don't like other series though...
Am considering watching Miller's Report between Episodes 9 and 10.

Holy crap, I loved 08 MS Team. Mostly because it was one of the few shows (at the time) where, yeah, the Mech pilot was the "star", but he really relied on his non-mech buddies in battle as well - needed them, despite his natural genius - and (up until [spoiler], at least), the stakes weren't "EVERYONE IN THE WORLD F0rEVAH!!11!!" but rather "My country v. this other one."
It was, in many ways, a "smaller" anime than the other Gundams... and I loved it for that.
Incidentally: Full Metal Panic!, Full Metal Panic? Fumoffu (though fundamentally different in tone and style), and Full Metal Panic! The Second Raid is an excellent series, and well-worth the watch. As noted Fumoffu is not like the others - it's basically just a comedy series set in between two serious ones, though Second Raid is even serious of the two.
While I'm talking about stuff I've not seen lately; very old, but excellent is Record of Lodoss War and Cowboy Bebop. I once owned both of those. I am now missing them, and some of my friends' contact information. :/

I read the manga for Parasyte back when I worked for B&N, but I never finished it - it was still coming out in the states (or at least in our store) at the time, and we moved before it got to the end of the story. I'm waiting for the anime to be finished on Crunchy Roll before diving in as a result, though I loved the manga. Warning though: body horror. All the body horror (at least implied, if not shown). Some of those parasytes, man. O.o

A friend of mine LOVES parasyte- in some ways it's like Guyver, but with more shojo elements, from what she decribed. Is this true?

You know, the only exposure I've had to Guyver is the old American movies? Yeah, I know, I know. So... I can't really say. Sorry.
I will say that the story of parasyte was... fascinating. I've since been spoiled on the "mystery" (which I won't relate) and I'm not entirely sure how great a mystery it actually is after the fact, but the story was compelling enough that I strongly want to read the rest of it, despite now knowing both what happens and what the whole "mystery" actually is. What I followed of the series of manga was entirely worthwhile and I don't regret being exposed either to its ideas or story, despite having not had the opportunity to finish it.

I relate to different characters in different ways. I couldn't really answer your question because I don't think there is a single anime character that I most relate to - I mean, if anyone, it's probably something exceedingly specific.
I'll give an example: in some ways, the early-attempt Parn might mesh (you know, before he became awesome), buuuuuuuuu~t even then that fails, because he takes himself way, way too seriously, whereas I just... don't. Early-attempts Parn was like me when I was first starting to get into Highschool, except... I loved games too much, so that kind of fails. And of course, he was more skilled in ways I couldn't match and I was more educated in ways that he'd never heard of. Beyond all of that, he doesn't write enough, or talk enough.
Sena from Eyeshield 51? Maybe if he was slower and less bullied. Wait.
That's kind of what I go through whenever I attempt to come up with a character I relate to. Yes, there are elements of characters - elements of nearly every character - that I relate to in some manner or another (unless the character is... unrelatable), but I don't really think I'm best represented by any of them.
Especially at this stage in my life, though. I mean, it's hard to find a happily-married, stay-at-home dad with grandiose dreams but little practical skills who's probably a wee bit too obsessed with nerd culture. Despite the prevalence of Otaku in anime.
I suppose the closest might be the guy (I don't recall his name) from I Can't Understand What My Husband Is Saying, but... he just... uh... his... he... no.

it's a bit of a weird one. See the world from the one character's perspective and the school is a happy place filled with friends and normal classes. She rationalizes things like "why does that girl carry a shovel around all the time. She must really love shovels" and every so often you realize that not everyone she is talking to is actually there.
It seems sweet and funny at first but it's actually pretty grim, especially at the parts where the fantasy is in danger of breaking.

A couple days ago my friends an I were discussing Gurren Lagann and came to the conclusion that the hero should have been a duck. Nothing in nature beats the male duck's spiral power.
let's not do this, guys. This anime was about a horrible moment in history, noone was thinking straight, and they didn't know much about the situation other than that they were living in it. this is also the same conflict that had civilians commit suicide rather than surrender when starving because they legitimately believed the enemy forces had would either take over their bodies, eat them in turn, or something else even more outlandish/impossible. Don't judge their madness by your sanity, especially removed by years and knowledge of nuclear fallout.That's why they were packaged together!
With Grave, my main problem was that we were supposed to sympathize with the kid who, while I did empathize with his plight, I couldn't sympathize with his decisions - they were wrong and repeatedly so, getting himself and [redacted for spoilers].
Effectively his pride was such that I just couldn't sympathize - empathize, yes, but not sympathize - which, you know, was part of the point. But because of this it just felt preachy instead of powerful.
Don't get me wrong - I teared up, and felt miserable, but the entire thing left me going, "Ugh, you moron, you did this." more than, "I'm so sorry." Again, part of the point, but not my preferred watching experience.

no worries you can find the Parallel Works on yutube. They are like 5 minute music videos showing the GL characters in an alternate setting. Personally I love the first one. Nice rescue the princess sword and sorcery story
