Hey
I am a new player and i want to make a natural weapon ranger. I have seen some other people's suggestions for nw rangers, but i dont know what to pick. I'm thinking about a character thats a mix of wolverine, conan, sabertooth, and the skaar (the son of the hulk). Also I have to start from level 1.

unless you are using a race with natural weapons, your hand is forced into using the claws from Aspect of the Beast (at level 2). That does open a gateway for Rending and other dirty tricks.

The other (current) option is a Half Orc with either the Toothy Trade out for Orc Ferocity or Razortusk Feat. That does make for an interesting and FUN character build. (Nothing shows commitment to the cause more than Biting as your offensive attack route of choice.)

I imagine that the Advanced Race Guide is going to provide more races with Natural attack options.

Ok cool, I heard about choosing a half-orc, but which is more powerful, the toothy, or the Razortusk feat? And what do you mean by "other dirty tricks"?

In the first round of the first combat of my current campaign, my half orc burst through a door and bit a guy in the neck. None of my party members knew I had a bite, and they've called me The Demon ever since. RP-wise, natural attacks are way more fun.

So which did you pick? Razortusk or Toothy?

Grand Lodge

Neither, pick the Tusked race trait.

So what is the difference between the three?

Also, should I keep orc ferocity and the weapon familiarity?

Grand Lodge

Tusked just eats up one of your two traits. The other two alter your racial traits, or eat up a feat.

oh got it

Grand Lodge

Of course, any race can take the adopted and tusked traits, and gain a bite.
What races are allowed?

Um, just the basic races right now, the group I'm playing with consist of all new players. But I like the idea of playing a half orc though.

Grand Lodge

Ah, I was going to suggest the Oni-Spawn Tiefling. A very good choice for this class.

Oni-spawned tiefling... Is it like the tiefling in the bestiary?

Also, if I go with the half-Orc, what three ability scores should I go with?

Grand Lodge

The Oni-Spawn Tiefling is from Blood of Fiends. With the +2 strength, +2 wisdom, -2 charisma and alter self ability, you basically grow what natural weapons you need.

Ok i like it already

Grappling may be a fun option. You can use bite attacks while grappling an opponent, and if you go for the claws feat you'll always be wielding no weapons for the purpose of grappling. Good times.

So what kind of feats should I go into then for this class?

Grand Lodge

Nabbing improved unarmed strike along with feral combat training will open up a lot of options. Options like dragon style.

If your GM will let you take the monster manual feats as regulars (not bonuses), getting Multiattack at 3rd after claws at 2nd seems pretty decent. You're definitely going to want to put your highest stat and racial bonus in STR.

@blackbloodtroll if you're going that route, why bother with Feral Combat training at all? Just make a full attack with unarmed strike kicks and use all nat weapons as secondaries.

But doesn't multiattack acquire three natural attacks?

2 claws (aspect), bite (orc). I count three.

Grand Lodge

If you are attacking with only natural attacks(which you should mostly) then multattack is not all that necessary. A single level in unarmed fighter might really boost your build. The Prolong Magic trait is something you want to consider.

Oops, I was under the impression that bites were secondary unless they were your only natural attack. That not being the case, you don't need multiattack unless you want to add in unarmed strikes.

Grand Lodge

The improved unarmed strike is more of a feat tax in this situation. Dragon style will add more to power attack, which you should get.

Bite granted by Toothy is primary natural attack. Wording of bite granted by tusked or bite granted by barbarian power animal fury state that they suffer -5 penalty to attack rolls when part of full attack - which may mean that they are secondary attacks or be just misleading reminder that natural weapons used with manufactured weapons become secondary attacks.

Another naturally biting race: kuru.

Grand Lodge

Oni-Spawn Tiefling basically gives you two claws and a bite automatically. Combining this with the Shapeshifter archetype will mesh well, and grant you a +6 to strength at 3rd level.

What about going into monk? Would feral combat style allow flurry of blows to work with natural weapons?

So here are my stat roles:
18
18
17
16
15
13
Suggestions?

Woah, you rolled well.

Sadly, I wouldn't know how to place those.

Str 18 --> no explanation needed, I guess
Dex 17 --> higher ini, higher boost to armor class, Dex-based skills like Stealth and Acrobatics, Ref save; might boost later by stat increase
Con 18 --> more hp, more rounds raging, Fort save
Int 13 --> +1 skill point, qualify for some combat manouvers
Wis 16 --> higher Perception, Will save (you do not want to be dominated considering your damage output)
Cha 15 --> Intimidate is a class skill after all

Ruyan.

STR 18

DEX 18
CON 16
INT 15
WIS 17
CHA 13

Would be my suggestion.

Also, look at all the avatars from post 1 and pretend they are having a typical goblinoid discussion.

Ok so I have two races: half Orc or Oni spawn tiefling
Two different stat builds
But what feat should I have for level one? Weapon focus(claws)?

Silver Crusade

I suggest these ability scores:

STR 18
DEX 16
CON 18
INT 13
WIS 15
CHA 17
_______

Now, you may ask: "Why should I have a 17 in CHA?" Well, it's needed for the Eldritch Heritage Line.

If you have the room for the Eldritch Heritage feat line (considering there isn't much to pick up for a Natural Weapon Ranger). This can net you a bonus to natural armor, a +6 bonus to STR, and the ability to grow in size, further increasing STR and CON (assuming you take the Orc Bloodline, which seems obvious for a Half-orc. As for your first level feat, pick up Skill Focus:(Survival). You need this as a prerequisite to picking up the Eldritch Heritage feats.

If you're not deadset on playing a pure ranger, I'd suggest picking up levels in Barbarian. If you only plan on taking a few, get at least 2 levels, and pick up the Lesser Fiend Totem rage power, which gives you a natural Gore attack for 1d8+STR mod damage during rages (totalling your natural attacks to 4 with claws and a bite). However, if you decide to invest more, go for 10 levels and pick up the Beast Totem rage power line, which will allow you to make full attacks on a charge during rages (Pounce). In either case, the only levels of ranger I would suggest you take is 2, to get permanent claw attacks via Aspect of the Beast.

Also, consider using unarmed strikes (through kicking) in your full attacks with your natural weapons, as both benefit from an Amulet of Mighty Fists. In which case, pick up the Multi-attack feat (to reduce your attack penalties on natural weapons made in conjunction with manufactured weapons/ unarmed strikes) and Two-weapon fighting feat (to increase the total amount of attacks you get in a full attack).

These are all separate suggestions, and haven't really been weighed in conjunction with one another.

Whoa that the fullest ansewer anyone has given me so far

But wait, it says for eldritch heritage that i can only get the first level ability of that bloodline. How do I get the other powers that you talked about?

EDIT: Nevermind found it.

Grand Lodge

Shapeshifter archetype ranger Oni-spawn, with a 2 level dip after 3rd into Barbarian to grab Lesser Fiend totem. At level 5, you can have 4 attacks with a +10 to strength. The dragon style and dragon ferocity with feral combat training will add x2 strength to first claw, and x1.5 strength on the second claw.

what form do i begin with though?

Grand Lodge

Lizardfolk nets you two claws and a bite. For your shifter's blessing, Form of the Bear is a good pick. Go alter self, move in, and shifter's blessing as a swift action.

Lizardfolk for a race?

Grand Lodge

No, use your alter self ability(the oni-spawn ability) to shape into a lizardfolk.

hey can you actually show me the full abilities or at least give me an idea of what an oni spawn can do? Just cuz i cant get the blood of fiends.

Grand Lodge

It's here.

how many times can you use alter self?

Grand Lodge

Once. It's minutes per HD, and with the prolong magic trait, it will act as if extended. A Robe of Blending will help later, when you need to use it more often.

Ok im thinking about sticking with the half-orc, but thanks for the suggestion about the oni spawn

Personally I'm saving the natural weapon ranger for a DM that will let me play some sort of lycanthrope, either rat for an urban campaign, or wolf for a standard one. I just dont like most of the other natural weapon options.
