Newbie GM to Society Play

Pathfinder Society

Grand Lodge

So I have decided to run a Pathfinder Society game out of my local gamestore as there is NOTHING in the Lower Mainland of BC, Vancouver area.

I find that I cannot seem to find a lot of the resources required for running this, or they seem to be all over the place. Is there a way to be linked to a vast area where all I need is there? Ive read the recent player's guide to society play, its alot to digest, even after just playing a home game of Pathfinder.

Questions arose with my players who expressed interest. Where are the Advanced Players guide Pre-gens? The Ultimate Magic Pregen? Why did they skip those books? Are those books allowed for making a character? The guidelines arent so clear to me.

Also any tips for a new GM to Society Play?

I'm short on time, but I can answer a couple of questions quickly:

Excellent!

They weren't skipped as such, it's just that creating more pregens is a low priority item on a very long to-do list for the PFS staff.

They are. Look for those books in Additional Resources to see what is permitted (most things from those books are).

Start by running the free 'First Steps' trilogy, especially if your group are all new to PFS:

Which resources specifically are you looking for? The GtOP is really the only thing you need to highlight the differences between a home game and Society play. Mostly, it's about character creation and filling out chronicles.

If you mean how do you get play started in a store, there are three steps. 1) Ask the store owner. 2) Advertise. 3) Play.

I find it's easier to recruit three people specifically - try to bring some of your home game friends with you - the first couple of times that you play, and save the other seats for drop-ins. You need 3 players to make a valid table, so if you just wait for people to drop in, it can lead to a disappointing evening. Much public play uses online or in-store signups so that the GM/coordinator knows how many players to expect, and how many tables they'll have.

Your local Venture-Captain could help you with details on how to organize a game specifically that's local. There isn't one in Vancouver, but there's Chris Jarvis in Seattle, or if you are looking for the closest Canuck, there's Brent Jans in Edmonton.

Asking questions here is a good strategy too; lots of us pop in and answer questions from time to time. So good luck, and keep asking! :)

Kudos to you for starting a group in your area!

The "Core Assumption" is the list of rulebooks that is assumed to be accessible for any Society game. Currently, it consists of:

  • Core Rulebook
  • Pathfinder Society Field Guide
  • Guide to Organized Play (the current version is 4.1)

Any rule that isn't in these books will be printed in the scenario as necessary for the GM. Players wishing to use material from other sources have to check to see if it's allowed on the Additional Resources list. All players must also bring a copy of all applicable books with them when they play a character using rules from those books. A watermarked PDF is also acceptable.

My advice here is that if someone wants to play a character from these books, they should make their own. I usually use the pre-gens for new players, in which case a simpler character is better.

Good luck, and if you have any further questions, this is a great place to ask!

Well, looks like I'm too late to add much. Good luck, and most of all, have fun!
