stealth as a class skill for Barbarian

Pathfinder First Edition General Discussion

Silver Crusade

Why doesn't the Barbarian have it ? As "primitive" cultures who do a lot of hunting (and maybe raiding) this seems a skill that would fit the class.

Because it's only a 3 point difference.

Because you don't use Stealth to sneak up on a deer you are hunting for supper--you use Survival.

I thought there should be a possiblity to build more Conan-esque barbarians, who are more subtle and skillful than your regular berserker which would entail such things as stealth as a class skill and using predominantly light armor.

Then again i guess in PF/DnD terms conan the barbarian, at least the way he acts in the movies (Arnie) would be more of a rogue ranger, with a one or two level dip into barbarian to get some sort of emergency rage.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

That's what traits are for. : D

being a barbarian can be just as much of a mindset as a class ;)

Conan is a gestalt barbarian/fighter/rogue with 18 in all stats and a +10 loincloth.

Yeah, I sometimes think the barbarian might have been better off just being called berserker or something, since not everyone who would be called a barbarian or even warrior of such a culture goes foaming mad in combat.

RAAAAARRRR !!!!!! ME RAGING BARBARIAN AND ME HUNTING RABBIT! BE VERY VERY QUIET!!!!!

On the other hand, I always play my Magus as foaming mad whenever crap hits the fan... On the other hand, no actual rage benefits :(

The barbarian using rage doesn't have to go foaming mad. It can just as easily be a simple adrenaline rush, with the tunnel vision and time perception changes that accompany it. Barbarians can be cool as a cucumber on the outside when they rage. In fact, they're much more intimidating that way.

"The hulking tribal removes his peace mask and stalks toward you with cold, dead eyes. His face betrays no emotion, but the scent of rage fills your nostrils as he approaches, then, with blinding speed, swings his heavy maul at your head. . . . Er, what's your AC again?"

I will remember this idea for when I next play a barbarian.

Agreed. I have a player taking a barbarian in an upcoming game as the best analogy to her concept: a fighter that goes 'intensely' crazy in combat and uses a big two-hander without much subtlety.

NO NEED STEALTH TO SURVIVE. IF CHASE DEER, CATCH IT WITH SURVIVAL. IF CHASE BAD GUY, CATCH IT WITH SMASH-HAMMER. IF NEED SURPRISE BAD GUY, SURPRISE HIM WITH RAGE-CHARGE-POUNCE. IF BAD GUY SCARY, AM NOT CATCH ME, TOO FAST

I just started playing a barbarian with a good dexterity and used a trait to get stealth. Not a big deal to diversify your skill list.

My barbarian doesn't necessarily "Rage-out" when he rages. Rather he takes on an alternate form with his eyes going yellow, skin darkening and cracking, and of course he grows horns!

We need AM Barbarian's opinion on this.

AM WOULD PROBABLY RECOMMEND HUNTING FROM BACK OF BATTY BAT AT DISTANCES FAR BEYOND ANIMALS PERCEPTION THEN RAGE LANCE POUNCING ANIMAL.

PROCCEED TO HANG ANIMAL STILL ON LANCE ON FIRE TO COOK UNTIL DONE.

Master Arminas

But you do use Stealth to ambush foes, which is something that the warrior-cultures that the Barbarian class are pretty clearly based off of were quite adept at. How else are you supposed to survive in that Light-Medium armor? ;)

I have to agree that Stealth seems to me to be a no-brainer skill for a tribal warrior.

I can think of nothing LESS stealthy than a Barbarian.

This is why we have traits to represent that you were a hunter in your tribe if you want.

And speaking of AM I wonder where he has been lately
