(I think I'm the one that mentioned Vanyel) Well, they did kind of have a happier ever after. But you don't really realize that until the Second book of the Mage Storms trilogy. I think it's the second book, Winds of Change. In fact, Stefen and Vanyel get to spend a LOT of time together...

I was just looking at the Valdemar Wiki, and I thought it referred to Vanyel as "inverted". I was about to unleash some holy hell, and then I realized that he was actually described as "introverted." It is past time for me to go to bed, I think...

Huh, an LGBT topic with....10 pages?! Holy ****!
Well, I'm on a time crunch right now so I've only read the first page so far... still, thought I'd make a 'hi!' post of some kind. Someone mentioned they didn't know a 'T' gamer, so allow me to fix that.
The name's Victoria (Vicky or V to my friends) and I am a transgender gamer. I was born with... (PG-13...um) 'male parts" for lack of a better word. And despite wanting to be female my whole life, my parents named me Dick. Yes, Dick. The irony is staggering.
Like so many, I tried to 'blend in' for years, thinking there was something wrong with me. It wasn't until college I learned of the Trans community, of surgeries to change one's gender. Even then, I hesitated as I was afraid I'd lose my family (a common occurrence for many in this community, and when your grandmother nearly disowns your cousin for dating someone 'of color' my odds didn't look promising).
Still, fears and all I went through with it, and came out nearly a decade ago now. My family did NOT disown me, for which I am very thankful. I did the lengthy required steps (therapy, real life test, etc) and had my surgeries done in 2009.
Now I'm all legally female with the right hormones and right parts. I'm happily married to a wonderful wife, and get to play the role of favorite auntie to some adorable nephews. I can't complain.
So there you go, now you can all say you know a transgender gamer :)
And for the curious, I do work for Transgender awareness in the local area, giving panels and answering questions at colleges and the like. So if you have any questions you'd like answered, feel free to send me a message. Nothing is too personal, embarrassing, etc. I've answered plenty of 'embarrassing' questions on a stage, so I can handle an email or two lol. "Ignorance is the enemy of Tolerance, and only through learning can we best it."
I'll be around ;)

That should be Mage Winds not Mage Storms. Oops. :)

Opps, guess the second zero didn't type. Was supposed to be '100' pages, which I know isn't the exact number, but still. I'm just surprised there are this many posts in an LGBT topic. I've been on transgender forums that didn't have half that many posts, period.
This thread had its highs and lows but we still try to keep it up. A few times I was afraid it will end locked up or dead and gone but it managed to survive.

We Californians have our moments, though.
If Californians paid their bills and honored the contracts they signed, I wouldn't have so many problems with them. As it is, there's not a day that goes by that I don't want to sink that entire wretched state into the Pacific.

What's AR? And you can't blame everything on all Californians. You don't like the government, and that's fine, I don't either. But I pay my bills and honor my contracts. So please don't generalize like that. It's offensive and it's not appreciated and this thread is not meant to be offensive.

Welcome, Victoria!
There are a number of us trans folk who hang out in this thread, so you'll be in good company. And apart from the occasional bit of ignorance, it's a pretty trans-friendly space, and more generally LGBTQ-friendly as well. Lots of good people posting here, and a lot of good discussions (and general goofing around as well).
Cheers!

1)AR= Accounts Receivable
Go watch Superman (Christopher Reeve version).
Who said anything about the government?

What does superman have to do anything with this? And Californian's aren't the only people who don't pay credit card bills or keep contracts. So please, don't generalize. And I said government before I knew what AR meant.
Anyhow, my point is, not all Californians are alike, just like not all Michiganains are alike or all Oregonians, or all New Yorkers. You just can't generalize especially while being offensive.

I'm pretty sure Brox was making a joke because of working as an AR in California.

I'm pretty sure you're right. But it wasn't coming across that way originally. It's hard to make a joke with plain text, without throwing in "I need some beach front property" or something to make it clear that it's a joke. Otherwise, in a thread of touchy people, you might get taken seriously.

Your preferences were "inverted", turned upside down from what they were supposed to be.
This. It generally carried a connotation of moral corruption and perversion, so it would definitely be considered a slur.

Yeah. He was definitely introverted, but from the abuse he suffered as a kid, it's not surprising. He was definitely not a pervert though. :) I really like his character.

No need to descend into a fight about California. This thread welcomes everybody.
Now let's put aside our differences so that we can all make fun of Florida.
Ugh! The Humidity! I have never been to Florida and, while I would love to see Disney World someday, I really don't look forward to the humidity.

Read the Vanyel trilogy when I was nine and, of course, loved the angst because I was nine and spent a long time sighing over the melancholy and tragic romance of it all. (Look, I was reading a lot of Victorian novels back then.)
It was definitely a formative experience for me. Having reread it as an adult, it's like, oh, Misty's prose is actually terrible and there are a lot of problems with this, but the nostalgia's too strong for me to let it go. :-) (FWIW, I think her particular tics are at their least terrible in the Vanyel trilogy.)
Ivanova and Talia from Babylon 5 are also some of my favorites, just because there's a moment there before you find out what's actually going on where their relationship, despite being new, is so cute and so comfortable that you can picture them getting old together with that same edged sweetness.
Phedre and Melisande in the Kushiel books remain fascinating to me. Not a healthy relationship, clearly, but beautifully drawn.
The Mad Duke of Tremontaine in The Privilege of the Sword. <3 <3 <3 forever. Neurotic as hell, but also one of the most clear-eyed and richly humanitarian characters on the printed page.
Ashleigh and Kieran in The God Eaters. So sweet.
Taisin and Kaede in Huntress.

+1 for Ivanova and Talia.

Herald Vanyel Ashkevron from the Last Herald Mage trilogy.
Edit:
And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one. Jessica, while you were reading those at age nine, I was 25 and in the Air Force reading them. The angsty drama and melancholy is what made the young Vanyel into a believable character. It was reading the Herald Mage books that finally let me realize that I could just be me even it I couldn't tell the world thanks to DADT.
