Oracle of Nature's bonded mount

Rules Questions

I'm making a medium sized Oracle with the Nature mystery, and her first revelation is the Bonded Mount.

What I was wondering was if I had to choose between a horse and a camel, or could I choose a different kind of mount??

What you're asking is can I ignore this part of the rules which I don't like?

Bonded Mount (Su): You gain the service of an unusually intelligent, strong, and loyal mount. The creature must be one that you are capable of riding and is suitable as a mount. A Medium oracle can select a camel or a horse. A Small oracle can select a pony or wolf, but can also select a boar or a dog if she is at least 4th level. This mount functions as a druid’s animal companion, using your oracle level as your effective druid level. Bonded mounts have an Intelligence score of at least 6.

It's spelled quite plainly what the mystery's rules say you can have. If you're medium it's camel or mount. If you're in a home game, you can ask your DM for an exemption. If you're doing PFS, then you're stuck with those choices.

One thing you may be missing. This isn't your first revelation, it's just one of your choices. You don't need to choose this mystery at all if it doesn't work for you.

The problem with this mystery and the wording on it in general is that some things dont make sense. For example when a medium oracle gets to 6th level can they select a wolf now that it is Large size and capable of bearing him as a mount?

If not its stupid, and needs to be changed, this is why it is very hard to keep the complete rules for these things down to only a sentince or two when they really deserve a paragraph. Also it looks like they need a more flushed out rules for animal companions in general, there are so many classes that get access to them, they either need to allow any class that gets access to them the ability to choose any mount that is of the appropriate size or create a separate section of the animal companion rules and list creates that are usable as mounts. Like animal companions with the [Mount] Tag, so you know a creature that is at least 1 size category smaller then it can use it as a mount.

Honestly i've seen a druid use a tiger as a mount and thought it was terrifying! And then i laugh at the poor cavalier and laugh at him as he is only able to choose a horse. There is a huge disparity between druid, which is powerful as heck and other classes which are "ok" and have to get a weaker version of the animal companion.

I think it is intentional. The Developers use the Animal Companion mechanic to give the mounted classes regular access to a mount that can survive level appropriate encounters.

Might help if you think of the mount-type animal companions to be tool for spirited charge.

Man, this was a kind of snarky reply.

See, Bonded Mount says
The creature must be one that you are capable of riding and is suitable as a mount. A Medium oracle can select a camel or a horse.

So the wording leads you to believe that it has to be a creature you are capable of riding and that as a medium creature you can select a horse or a camel, not that you have to select a horse or camel.
Which is why I was asking if there were other suitable mounts for a first level character that would fit this role, because that wording leaves it open for various interpretations.

I dunno man, maybe I didn't word my question right, or maybe you're just quick to reply in a sassy manner.

I dunno man.
I dunno.

I'm kinda with you on this Nikk, i think there needs to be more hard set rules for this.

When the text says what you "CAN" do, it doesn't mean that you can do anything else it's the inclusive list. It means that as a Medium rider those are the choices that you can select. It means you can't select any others unless your DM decides otherwise.

It's the Bonded Mount mystery, it's not the Druid Animal Companion class feature. It just uses the mechanics of the latter for brevity.

You can select the horse or camel. If you are high enough level (7) you can select one of the animals that a small creature can select since many of them have upgraded to size large - suitable for a meduim creature.

Again I think the intention is not to add meaningful combat potential, but rather to provide a durable mount.

The text for the Cavalier's mount ability is pretty much the same as the Oracle's Bonded Mount revelation, and if you look at the PFS FAQ entry As a paladin or cavalier, what mount can I have? you'll see that Cavaliers are limited to what is listed there. So since the texts are so similar I'd say that it's intended that you are limited to what is listed.

That, along with a few more reasons, is why I do not play PFS. :)

I think there are some medium sized dino's you can ride. Just start off in the Realm of the Mammoth lords.

The answer you received is the correct one -- you cannot try and use little things like the appearance of one "may be" in a paragraph to justify choosing any mount that appears in the world -- but you are also correct that the response you received was rude, snarky, and inconsiderate.

I hate to break it to you, but that happens a lot here, and on most every other message board in existence. In particular, LazarX is a frequent nasty, ill-tempered poster, so please don't take it personally. It's his failing, not yours.

So, I was just kinda wondering, since the wording is a bit vague. I mean, I wasn't trying to get an uber mount or anything, or break any rules. I just don't play classes with mounts often, and wasn't sure.
Soooooo
Yup, I'ma just go with a horse though. Figure horse makes more sense than a camel for an oracle from Lands of the Linnorm Kings
