Drug Rules

Rules Questions

Dear All,

I'm a bit confused with drug rules in PF.

Take for example Opium. Each time you use this drug you take 1d4 Con damage. And if you are addicted to it, you have to use it every day or you start having some kind of withdrawal symptom. So basically, if you have ample amount of Opium, and don't want to have any problems - you can use it every day - but, you will actually die in less than 4 days!

1d4 Con damage each day, and you can't naturally heal ability damage if you are addicted... it means 2,5 Con damage per day average...

So the question is... What I'm doing wrong? :)

Drugs are bad, m'kay?

You read it correctly. Drugs are just pretty bad in this game. As long as you are addicted bad things happen.

As the system goes, it is difficult to play a character with a drug abuse. The penalties (especially for such as opium) is really bad, and require you to have a lesser restoration ready to deal with the drawbacks.

Other drugs aren't as bad in the system, and the benefits are significantly better.

Not rolling the die, as a string of 1s could happen. Aside from that, you're correct on every point.

As long as you're addicted, and could provide for your addiction, death is a really fast approaching outcome.

What is most ridiculous about the drugs is that they can be a lot better than poison.

Take Opium:
- Works on injury, so nice for your melee and ranged attacks.
- No save, bad stuff from drugs are unavoidable compared to poison.
- 1d4 con and wis damage.
- The good stuf isn't much, so let the target get +2 on fort saves (he doesn't get a save against the opium).
- Unlike poision, the effect only happens once. But luckily the drawback of multiple use stacks with itself, and since the price is low (25 gp) you might just coat a bunch of arrows.

They aren't too bad as long as you can make your addiction saves or in the odd case of zerk fail them. Drugs aren't really something the standard pc is going to want to be indulging in. On the opposite note I've got an alchemist who is a druggie that tries near on anything and he hasn't had any issues yet.

I don't mean to offend people who've suffered from drugs in their lives, but I've always been curious to see what it's like to play a drug addict cleric who can deal with his Con damage via restoration spells. The RP possibilities must be pretty interesting.

Liberty's Edge

Yeah, the drug rules simply aren't that good for any actual addict or addiction. I'd apply the damage once a week and no more (the first time in that week you take the drug), applying all other effects normally, and make the whole thing work much better.

Alchemist can eventually do all the drugs they want, and suffer no ill effects.

I'm assuming you mean poison immunity.

This means they also gain no benefits.

Well, they can craft the hell out drugs, and have restoration on their list. They make great addicts and dealers.

It does seem that the effects are drug addiction are very severe ... not that are not in real life but RL drug addicts can function more or less for years sometimes before succumbing their addiction either fatally or mentally.

I am going to have to look into this as one of my current campaigns involves a drug-smuggling ring. The once a week addiction effects as suggested might work out better.
