Basilisk Strategy

Advice

Party will be encountering a Basilisk next week.

What are cheap ways to effectively combat one?

Magic items, etc.

I guess I am looking for cost-effective ways to circumvent the gaze attack particularly.

Thanks!

Fogged Goggles. They're basically designed for fighting Basilisks. You're always averting your Gaze while wearing them and you get a +8 on saving throws against visual attacks.

For a -4 penalty on perception and all targets have 20% concealment.

Are these what you're referring to? They aren't perfect, but they'll certainly help.

If they know it's coming, there's always blindfolds. Hopefully the basilisk doesn't have levels in rogue.

Sorry, misread the name. This is what you want.

They're 10 gold, so, no excuse not to get them.

Both items are great guys, thanks.
I think the 2k price on the Glarecutters makes them hard to justify compared to the 10gp smoked goggles.

ok, now assume you were the gm...

standard lair of cultists but with a basilisk guard... should I let one of the cultists have a pair of these goggles so that the players aren't completely unprepared, or should I just let them attempt to avert their eyes?

Party consists of:
fighter6
Rogue5/Alchemist1
bard6
ranger5

While this will be an end of session encounter, it will not be the big boss.

What would you do?

With the low cost, the goggles are pretty irrelevant to treasure values.

How do the cultists deal with the basilisk, though? Do they wear goggles? Do they walk through with their eyes closed? I wouldn't leave 4 sets of goggles lying around before the basilisk encounter, but do consider how the cultists handle the situation, and do what makes sense. If they do just close their eyes, perhaps make some rumors available so the party can be forewarned.

Right. I plan on allowing them to see petrified statues to clue them in. Also the cult uses reptiles frequently as part of their dogma so the statues should be a dead giveaway w any knowledge checks.

I agree... 4 sets of goggles makes it too easy imo. I could stand to give them one though.
