Summoners and Arcane Mark

Arcane Mark is listed as a cantrip for summoners, but does it do any good for them?

The only thing I can see that it's good for is that it's needed for Instant Summons later, but Instant Summons isn't on the summoner spell list. It's a level 7 sorcerer/wizard spell and summoners are only allowed spells up to level 6.

Am I reading this completely wrong?

If you want the spell to be effective: It is not.

But being able to mark objects and creature can have all kinds of nice effects.
Know that you're up against shapeshifters? Mark every party member to avoid confusion!
Want to make a bottle of mundane water look like magical potion? Inscribe a few runes into it!
Being dragged away from the party by orcs? Mark trees, the floor, doors or whatever to help your party find you!

There are probably numerous other applications. Be creative!

Its like writing your name on your stuff in case something happens to it, with magic.
