My dad is in the hospital in the UK this holiday season. He was diagnosed with lymphoma on 12/22. I'm on the left coast, in CA, and don't have the resources to visit him.
He introduced me to D&D around the age of 7 - in 1981 and I've been gaming ever since. This year I got a freelance assignment from Paizo, which was amazing. Thanks Paizo! He was very happy for me.
I'm worried and hopeful at the same time. I thought I might share this with the community - which has been a bright light in a tough year - and wonder if anyone else has dads or moms who played a role in introducing them to the game.

My dad got me my first RPG when I was 11. I guess he kind of regretted doing that since, but I am ever grateful to him for it. Not to mention reading the Hobbit and Lord of the rings. Yay for dads.

Mine thought D&D was goofy, "it looks like something designed for dorky people to sit around and argue about all these stupid rules!...." but....he bought me DC Tarzan comics with John Carter stories in the back when I was 3. He bought me the Hobbit when I was 8.
So it's his fault any way.
Yeah, my dad read the Hobbit and the LotR to me as bedtime stories with my twin brother. Hence, instant gamer.

My parents are not gamers, but my mom did introduce me to Tolkien and C.S. Lewis (she read The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe and several other Narnia books to me before I was able to read them myself). I have introduced my brother and sister to gaming, though, and now we've formed a collective that shares cool s$@@ all the time. (I introduced Bro to D&D, he got Dragon at the library or something, he came to the boards, and I followed him online . . .)
Also my mom and bro are Whedonites, but that's somewhat unrelated.

He started feeling bad a few weeks ago, and checked into the hospital less than a week before Xmas; was diagnosed on the 22nd. And now this. It's too fast.

Update: he's doing better than expected at the moment. I don't know how optimistic I should be but at least I may get to see him before he goes.

Damn...Jeff, I've lost family more than once during holidays, and all I can tell you is to hold on to the good memories, they'll help you get through it. I'm very sorry for what you and yours are now going through, loss is never easy.

Jeff, while your sad memories will be in the front of your mind for a while, the good ones will be the ones that you will remember the most soon. Think of the fun times that you had with your Dad. To answer your question, my Dad was not a gamer, but he was not judgmental.
