Well he wasn't that good of a swordsman in comparison to everyone else he was traveling with, IIRC according to the creative team behind the movies, he was about the 4th or 5th best swordsman in the series of the main characters. I believe the order was Will, then Norrington, then Barbosa then Jack

whatever it was, he built around the feint tree feat wise. and skill focus: bluff. and probably skill focus: acrobatics, considering some of his stunts.

Jack was good at fighting, but never displayed the technical skill one would expect from a fighter, rather feinted and tricked his way to an advantage. A rouge into duelist could be a good compromise, or maybe even a multiclass. But rogue remains the best starting point, and would be the primary ingredient in any build.

Remember he was good at using improvised weapons,so Catch Off Guard might be suitable. Also,he carried quite a few pistols(like many pirates did) because it took too long to reload one.
If this were 3.5(I know,it isn't..) I would say he's a Swashbuckler/Rogue with Daring Outlaw.

Actually he carried one pistol with one shot. Never used it though that I can remember. Maaybe at the end of the first pirates. Also remember in PotC reloading weapons was a non-issue. They all had magical auto-reloading weapons unless it was claimed they only had one shot in it.
It was number two though that he did use a rifle.
But Jack was awesome at fighting.. defensively. I'd have to say Cad as well. Cads are fighter rogues. Jack never sneak attacked. He couldn't pick locks either.
I'd say jack was something of like a level 3 pirate level 3 cad that goes into low templar. (Ignoring the fluff of the low templars.)

He did sneak attack, but following feints, mostly. Look at the distracting attack and beffudling strike talents. You can use sneak attack to do so much beside damage! Sleight of Hand? Palming the cursed coins certainly qualify. Bluff? Hell yes.
Could not pick lock? You do not have to put your skill points in disable device if you don't want to. It's not like if the rogue class forces you to do so. Disabling trap. Take a look at the swashbuckler or pirate archetype.
I stand by it. Rogue.
Come one, the rogue class can be used to do so much more than the archetypal fantasy thief. Sparrow is a perfect example of a roguish character. Look at what SwnyNerdgasm did.
