Is it pro or anti D&D or neutral?
It was aired because of the various deaths that people tried to link with D&D back in the early 80's. Gary Gygax was "interviewed" by 60 Minutes, and he defended D&D, saying there was (rightfully) no link between those deaths and the game...

That is the sad thing. It was not a joke. This was in the middle of the D&D scare. The woman whose son committed suicide, went on to teach the police nonsense about the game. Her claim that roleplay is the equivalent of behavior modification is falacious. If you believe her claim, then actors all would become their roles.

Wow. One of the guys in that video is trying to get people to take him seriously, and yet he actually says that in one of the cases, the kid's parents SAW HIM SUMMON A DEMON. Is this a joke?
Whether they are hallucinations or what, there are many documented cases of people believing they've seen 'spirits' of varying sorts. 'Evil Spirits' or 'Demons' being a common example (among others such as 'Ghosts' and 'Angels.') Furthermore, it's entirely possible the kid she 'saw summoning a demon' really was that messed up in the head for various reasons and really WAS trying to summon a demon.

Sigh.
Yep. I was there. Lived through it.
My own mother tried to convince me it was,... 'bad'.
Her source of information? Another mother, who had read PART of a book, written by a person who condemned D&D but had NEVER actually participated in, or even watched a game.
I Thank Heaven my Mother is a reasonable human being, capable of intelligent discourse. Even with her teenage son. :)

I wonder if the people involved in this scare also worried that 'cops and robbers' or 'cowboys and indians' endorsed and encourage murder and genocide? Its sad that many people have forgotten what it means to use one's imagination.
Have you not read (or seen) the news stories of children being suspended from school because they were playing "cops and robbers", with the reason being a "zero gun tolerance", even though the kids were using their fingers??

I haven't. Does anyone have a link?
(Not that I'd be terribly surprised. I've heard of children being suspended for reasons just as absurd.)

We don't allow kids to play "pretend gun" games at my school though I doubt I'd have any of our kids suspended for it -- elementary admin is out of my area anyway, except curriculum.
I don't think any schools allow "pretend gun" games.
They ban a game where no one can be hurt but still allow dodge ball.

But think of it this way. Imagine the piece on 60 minutes was about video games like Doom being destructive rather than D&D. Then, a supposed "expert" comes on, and in order to explain how it was not simply coincidence, he says, straight-faced, "One parent actually witnessed their son fire a plasma rifle in his bedroom."
Your first reaction would be, "How the hell did this kid get a plasma rifle?" Whether video games had anything to do with it would be far, far down the list of questions you'd want to ask.
