Essential Android apps

Technology

So for those with Android-powered hardware, what programs are do you consider "must haves" or "higly useful/fun"? RPG related would be nice, but anything you might recommend could be useful.

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Directly RPG related:

Haven't found too much. If you want a nice dice roller, get DiceBox. It's simple (no adding up, just showing dice) but reasonably pretty.

There's also Pathfinder Companion for spells. it has all the spells in it.

Summoner is well spoken of, but it's not free (except for the light version, which only has the lowest spell levels and no templates) and I don't have it.

More general programmes:

  • Astro. Decent file manager. It's free, too.
  • Opera Mobile. Well, all the browsers are available. I always preferred Opera, and the Android version is pretty neat.
  • ezPDF. Not free, but not that expensive, and a really good PDF viewer.
  • FBReader if you want to look at eBooks.

  • Fast Dilbert Reader and xkcd Browser for comics. I'm sure there are others.
  • ACV is a nice application for looking at comic books in the various CB(X) formats (which are just regular archives renamed, like CBZ is really just a zip archive)

  • Sovereign Court RPG Superstar 2009 Top 32, 2010 Top 8

Thank you Kaeyos, just added Pathfinder companion.

I'll second ezPDF. I buy pdf instead of the hardcovers because of it. You can browse via the bookmarks built into the pdf or create your own.
    Well worth the price.

I'll add MoboPlayer to the list. It's the piece of software you want if you want to look at videos on your Android device. It plays most everything - except some of the heavier audio codecs used in higher-quality .mkv files.

Google can't seem to find this one for me. Got a linky?

I believe you can download the .mkv codices separately.

Sorry, got it through the Market.

I checked market first, nothing named Pathfinder Companion that I saw. Ah well.

    Look for "Pathfinder Spells"

    Dark Archive

I use the PFRPG RD ( https://market.android.com/details?id=com.dragora.pfsrd&hl=en ) - it cost $2.59, but that's including everything in the PRD, updated when the PRD is updated.

    Sczarni

    Gaming stuff:

For dice, Dice Bag. Multiple profiles allows for different dice-sets, depending on character (all pre-loaded with their Atk/Save/Dmg routines if you wanna get crazy). Free & easy to use.

Summoner: yes, it's a pay program, but for like 2-3 USD, its worth it. Tracks your summons, rolls attacks & damage for them, and is all around great.

PF Spellbook. What it says on the tin: a spellbook of the various spells. You can "favorite" the ones you like, creating your PCs actual "spellbook" (or familiar, formulary book, etc), or search through spells by class and level.

    Not so gaming:

Google Docs lets you view, edit, and share your documents anywhere...very handy, especially if you keep your characters online.

Cozi: a family-organizer program. Shared calendars, grocery lists, "to-do" lists, and more. Works like an office-calendar/email program, but just for you & yours.

Zedge. get the wallpapers & ringtones you want, for free. Great app.

Handcent SMS. I hate the standard text-message software, and this lets you customize your SMS screen pretty much as you want.

    Sovereign Court

what's the best android app for pathfinder now? i just downloaded the free masterwork tools apps (open reference and npc gallery)

anything else out there that one would consider essential?

I got the Masterwork Tools app, and I find it absolutely irreplaceable. It's so good, so fast, and has nearly everything I need to find accessible within seconds. Again, as far as other things... Dice Bag, Astro File Manager, Cozi is relaly good especially with my family...

Yeah. I prefer the Masterwork Tools app to the pathfinder companion one, but here's the link to the spells one: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=air.be.jonsson.pathfinder.com pendium&hl=en

    Shadow Lodge

    MXPlayer
I used to swear by Moboplayer, but MXPlayer does everything it does, except it seems to play more videos, doesn't have an annoying splash screen on startup, and - most importantly - you can turn up the volume higher than normal (important in noisy public places).

    CamScanner
Turns your phone camera into a surprisingly high quality scanner. It'll even straighten up your document where you take a wonky photo. Think character sheet/chronicle sheet scanning.

    AirDroid
Lets you control the important parts of your phone from your computer wirelessly. Importantly, lets you transfer files onto your phone. I always use WiFi to do it, but I think you do it over 3G as well. You can also preview/assign ringtones, look up contacts or messages, etc. Worth it for transferring files alone, though.

    Desktop Remote or Unified Remote
These do the opposite - let you control your PC from your phone. Which one you get depends on the level of privacy you're willing to deal with. Desktop Remote is just a blank screen on your phone that you use like a trackpad, requiring you to still be able to see the cursor on the computer screen with your eyes. Unified Remote can do that as well, but it's able to do much more without having to see your screen, such as giving you buttons for your media player to change volume, start programs, etc. I'd recommend giving both a look and then deciding on which one you like. They both require a client to be installed on your PC as well, and they seem reasonably secure, matching up the phone to the PC with password-pairing.

    10,000,000
This is the only game I'll list - it's an Android port of the PC game which is incredibly addictive, even if you think most phone games are garbage (I certainly do). Arguably easier to play than the PC version. I have a few other games, but this one is worth a strong mention.

Not too big on dice roller apps, i find that the algorithms don't make for properly random numbers. However, the apps I really do enjoy using are PFRPG RD and PF Summoner. The latter is great to track your summons no matter if you're an arcane or divine caster. I also love d20 Character Sheet, it needs some work but it's very handy, can't wait for the new update.

    Grand Lodge

Pathfinder PF Special Edition, Starfinder Roleplaying Game Subscriber

If you're going to play a summoning character... you MUST get Summoner. (also available for IOS)

Ditto on that, and I would also recommend Eidolon Generator for the Summoners out there. Wish there was a save function, but handy nonetheless.

got the Masterwork Tools apps (both of them). Thanks guys!

    Shadow Lodge

I tried out Masterwork Tools - invaluable.

Better built than the other Pathfinder apps I've seen.

For PDFs, I prefer Moon+Reader Pro on my tablet, and ezPDF on my phone.

For PbP and just general usefulness, Clipper+ is amazing. It allows you to save snippets of text that you've copied, categorize them, and then copy them back into the copy/paste buffer with a single touch. The paid version can also sync across multiple Android devices.

Another handy PbP/general purpose app is User Dictionary Manager. This makes adding all those proper names and game terms (so that Swype recognizes them) a piece of cake.

Lastly, Feedly is an excellent RSS news feed reader for when you want to keep tabs on your PbP or follow *cough*stalk*cough* the recent posts of your favorite Paizo devs. ;)

d20 Skill Roller is great for secret rolls like Perception or Sense Motive.
I also use it for initiative on surprise round.

I have installed group of other programs too, but not tested them yet in real game.

BTW, the highly acclaimed "Combat Manager" is now available on Google Play.

    Link: Combat Manager

    Liberty's Edge

OneNote if you have a version of Office with it that you use.

Evernote. Even if you use OneNote you might like this better.

Only gaming related app I have is Dice Bag. I only got that for high level disintegrate castings. The customizable rolls are nice though.

As for general, QuickPic is my gallery app of choice, it was far better than the stock gallery on two phones so far.

If you like old game music formats (like .nsf files), Droid Sound plays most types (up through .psf), and also plays the older sound formats, like .mod, .it, and .xm.

My phone isn't compatible with this version... An update is needed.

Bear in mind that the Android version your phone runs isn't the only factor to consider. CM is compatible with Android 4.0.3 or higher, yet it is incompatible with my phone which is running 4.1.2.

The issue is that some apps require higher screen resolutions than what a phone can display. Given the amount of info in Combat Manager, I suspect that's the issue that you and I are having on that front. Still, it's hella useful for those with an Android tablet.

    Combat Manager needs a Tablet.

My S4 can't run it but my Transformer Prime can.

I'll show this to our GM - he has a tablet now.

You have a transformers prime?! I thought that was just a TV show!

Ha ha - I hate that name. Asus have finally realised that it's kinda naff sounding and removed the 'Prime' from the name of more recent versions. I only mentioned it here to indicate a 2011 device can use an app that a 2013 model cannot. So it's not about age.

I'm very happy with Archivist Elements.. great generator for random things.
ezPDF reader is useful for reading books but Pathfinder Open reference is my go to dictionary.

Still looking for a good initiative tracker for my phone. Combat manager probably won't work.. Thinking of building my own.

Archivist elements saved. Well with the dollar. Thanks man!
