Is there a rule on how much damage you can do with an improvised weapon in PFS? The Core Rulebook rules are quite vague with this, saying only that you choose a comparable weapon and use its stats.
From reading the Improvised Weapon Master feat, my best guess would be 1d6 with 1-handed improvised weapons and 1d10 with 2-handed ones.

I would factor size and weight. A chair leg 1d6, a broken bottle 1d4, a table leg 1d8, a bar stool 2d6.
EDIT: hehehe....I ninja'd bob

It largely is up to your GM. Most impro-weapons will likely qualify as a club, in my experience, but others are possible. With no hard and fast rule, defer to your GM.
One thing to remember is that just because you wield it with two hands does not make it a two-handed impro-weapon. It could just be you'll get the +1 to damage.
If you have any specific examples, I'm sure we (forumites) can voice our thoughts on equivalency.

Er, do you mean +50% STR mod? Or is the rule different for improvised weapons?
Or did you just let slip your knowledge of 4E? ;)

I was actually wondering about this. My barbarian takes the Throw Anything feat and can throw his greatsword. It's treated as an improved weapon and I'm supposed to look at the weapons table for something appropriate.
It's obviously two-handed, but I doubt it would still do the damage of a greatsword. But then, technically greatsword is the most similar weapon on the weapon table. ;)

Normally, a thrown greatsword still does damage as a greatsword. It is only necessary to adjust damage when the weapon would not strike as it is normally used.
(It is still a full-round action to throw two-handed weapons, even with the throw anything feat)

Well, my specific case was a bard that uses, at least on early levels, Summon Instrument to make weapons. Pick Arcane Strike, Power attack and a fair amount of Str, and you'll be swinging that +1 Cello for some pretty heavy damage.

My take is 1d4/1d6/1d8 for light/1-handed/2-handed weapons. That matches Improvised Weapon Mastery's numbers. Note that one size step up from 1d10 is 2d8, which would not match IWM.
The only snag (IMO) is this quote:
"To determine the size category and appropriate damage for an improvised weapon, compare its relative size and damage potential to the weapon list to find a reasonable match."
Wouldn't the closest reasonable match to a greatsword be....a greatsword?

It's worth mentioning that a weapon used as an improvised weapon threatens a critical os a 20 and does double damage (20/x2), regardless of whatever the base weapon's crit range was.
The damage bit is debatable due to the "closest reasonable weapon" wording, but the crit range is pretty clear.
I would probably treat a thrown greatsword as a two handed spear for damage because that's the closest throwing weapon.

Were this a game, I would just go with this as it sounds logical. But this is a forum and things must be argued!
But it says to "compare... damage potential". Wouldn't a large slashing sword have the potential for more damage then a piercing spear? :P

To be honest, since the sword is not made for throwing, I would probably compare it to a greatclub, since it might hit with the pommel instead of any of the sharp parts...

The damage potential of a greatsword from 10' away is... zero. When you throw it, it is no longer a great sword, it is an improvised chunk of metal with a sharp point and two blade edges.
When swung, the blade edges are pushed forward with by leverage and powerful force of two arms swinging it. With our improvised thrown weapon it has none of that. There is a reason there are almost no thrown weapons that deal slashing damage, if you don't have the weight of the weapon to push if forward through a single sharp point, they simple don't do near as much damage.
