Caravan Distances in The Hungry Storm (or Are We There Yet?)

Jade Regent

Now I've been wondering a bit about the distances covered during The Hungry Storm.

I've put everything in spoilers just in case.

Adventure Spoiler:
Though the journey is described as being around 3,000 miles across the Crown of the World, I fail to see exact distances put between each encounter.

I find it kind of difficult to plan when the caravan actually reaches their new destination except by kind of guesstimating.

Did I miss this information or does it not exist?

Has anyone done anything to figure out the exact distances between set encounter locations?

The distance between each point is one random encounter and some non-combat roleplay usually. Any more than that and you risk boring the players, they'll probably want to get back to their destination and the main plot before too long.

As a more serious answer though, it's never really come up for me. If the PCs actually care enough about the exact distances between two points just measure out the whole trip and divide it into chunks between stops. Make the chunks approximately equal, or with some bigger than the others at your discretion, so long as the total distance of each chunk adds up to the total distance of the journey.

It's not like your players can call you out for being wrong after all.

I was actually wondering because we are using the Caravan Rules and provisions so actual time is quite important.

But I like the chunk ideas, I think I'll go with that ^^ Thanks Gluttony.

I think this came up in the stickied Hungry Storm thread, but you can use a piece of string laid out over the presumptive caravan routes shown on the map in the adventure to mark out the distance, then holding your string up along a ruler and comparing it with the distance bar in the map legend.

Ah yes, here it is:

According to the map legend on page 18 and eyeballing the distance, you are looking at around 300 miles or so per inch on the map, so you can use a ruler (or, if you're really hardcore, a string translated to a ruler to account for curvature) to get a better approximation of the number of miles between each red dot.

With my "hardcore" string measurements I was able to eyeball the distance for my GM at about 3562 miles.

Not bad!

I still have my estimates.

3562~ MILES TOTAL
Miles... to site... days (32 speed caravan)

281.25... A... 8.78
562.5... F... 8.77
850... G... 8.98
903... H... 1.4
940... I... 1.1
1218.75... Iqualiat... 8.6
1312.50... L... 2.9
1405.25... Iqualiat... 2.9
1499... L... 2.9
2156.25... M... 20.5
2718.75... N... 17.5
3000... 0... 8.78
3157.5... P... 4.92
3438.75... Jagiin... 8.8
3807.5... Q... 11.5
3948.12... S... 4.37
4088.74... end... 4.4

That's with about 300~ extra miles tacked on-- according to the peasant I'm making GM this adventure path, you travel from Iqualiat to L, back, and then out again. I also counted S to the edge of the map, which gave me about another 140 miles. Subtracting 97 x 3 and 140 is about 431, which makes it about 3650~ish. So, my calculations are off by about 100 miles give or take.

I'll math out the days between each place for a 36, 40, 44, 48, 52 and 56 miles per day caravan speed. Just give me a minute.

EDIT: I couldn't format it right on the forums, so I made it a google document.

I could not for the life of me get this to show decimal points because I am not a person who uses Excel. If anyone knows how, please tell me so that I can make it show decimal points. It really irritates me that the 56 mpd caravan's first trip from Iqualiat to L takes 2 days and its second trip takes 1 day. >:/

Thank you so much for this. You have no idea how it helps me!

And thank you to everyone else who helped out, I just didn't want to make the quote bar three pages long. But I love all your ideas!

Thanks so much for this Ice Titan! This is incredibly helpful.

From what I can gather with your excel doc, the problem seems to be with the formula - the "QUOTIENT()" formula, by definition, returns an integer rather than a decimal. You have a couple options:

1) At the top of the google doc, go to "Format", then "Number", then "custom decimals" (or simply pick "2 decimals"). You should be able to change the numbers are displayed, although using the "QUOTIENT" formula will make the decimals all 0s.

2) The other option, and what I would recommend, would be to do a simple division in the cell (e.g., =A3/$C$2) rather than using the quotient formula.

I hope that helps!

Small correction: The formula in cell C3 should be:

=$A3/C$2

Then copy and paste-special, Formulas to paste the formula without changing the cell colors.

The dollar signs "lock" the cell reference when you copy - so this version makes it always refer to Column A for the numerator (total miles) and Row 2 for the denominator (speed).

You're right. Small oversight on my part. Thanks Cintra.

This is for those who do not want to take the time that others have already put in to build the random encounter chart. I rolled randomly and this is what I got. I made sure not to use two of the higher random encounters and spread a few out. Each number is one day of travel. If the caravan stops roll for any extra days they lag behing and if they go faster move everything down until you get to a point of interest and drop the rest and start over as normal. Happy Huntings!
