Giving a speech?

Rules Questions

I'm sure this is covered somewhere, but I can't find it...

What do PCs roll to determine effectiveness of a speech? Perform (oratory) is the obvious choice, but that seems more geared for entertainment. Also, no one needs an attribute in Perform to give a speech; anyone can do it. What if the PC is trying to convince a bunch of villagers to do XYZ? Would it be a diplomacy check that would count for the whole mass of people?

Thanks

I personally would make a Perform Oratory check, then a Diplomacy check with a bonus based on the Perform Oratory check result. That's just my intuitive house rule sense speaking, though.

Thanks Vinland, but how do you make a Perform Oratory if you don't have a rank in that skill? According to the rules (I think) you can't do a "Perform" skill without having a rank in it?

You can do a perform check with out any ranks in perform.

you could in 3.0 and maybe 3.5, but for PF Perform is a trained only skill (I think), (unless it is like Handle Animal where you can use the skill as a strait CHA check for give a command, but can't train an animal)

You might give it a CHA check see how good the speach is, then modify a Diplo skill roll from that?

How would you handle the case where one character WRITES the speach, while another character "performs" it ? A Cyrano De Bergerac situation or a "the king is just a mouthpiece for the real power behind the throne" thing.

I would just do a diplomacy check or perform (oratory) whichever is higher. Because you're trying to convince people to do something Diplomacy makes more sense, if you were trying to entertain or distract the perform would be better.

Aid another.

Possibly with a higher bonus for a high role on Perform(speechwriting).

If the player gives an awesome speech, or even a mediocre off-the-cuff speech, I wouldn't bother rolling to determine effectiveness; just make a judgement call. "Girl, that was great! They do what you want, except for the bartender who hates you because you were cheap at the bar. He stays behind to take his chances."

If the player simply announces, "My Bard gives a rousing speech to convince them to do X." Well, then let the dice roll and the NPC's suffer if the roll is bad. Then I would have them roll Diplomacy or Perform Oratory. If nobody has either, then roll a simple Charisma check.

A roll of cash. Or, when I'm really hungry, a bread roll. Don't cheap out on the coverings.

Perform is not a trained only skill, as Happler said. Further, a Perform check- "Check: You can impress audiences with your talent and skill in your chosen performance type." So if (s)he's blowing hot air to impress a crowd, that's Perform. If (s)he's trying to convince them to work hard to make their town more defensible against a goblin raid, that's Diplomacy. The example for improving defenses would count as simple aid (its for their own good), so convincing a lot of people to help with that would be easy. It wouldn't take much to raise the DC quite a bit. The challenge would be to get a bunch of people to pay attention. If the PCs have attention anyway, just go straight to the Diplomacy check. If they're trying to get the attention of a crowd in a marketplace, a Performance check would be in order, followed by Diplomacy for the convincing.

If you only wanted to make one roll, that should be dependent on whether or not the PC has attention already and if they're trying to convince or impress. On the street or just trying to raise hype- Performance. Trying to convince a group to do something who is already listening- Diplomacy.

You can use Perform untrained.
