I'm wondering how the destination is selected. Can the caster choose a specific plane, or is it random? If random, are there limits on which planes they might get sent to?
This ability has "DM fiat" written all over it. It's probably been left intentionally vague as to remain within the scope of your DM's campaign.

I would assume it is random, like everything else about the spell.

It's probably best to keep it that way, since it makes getting that PC back with the group as easy or as difficult as it needs to be in the context of the campaign.
Having a guy lost on another plane can be an awesome adventure hook all on its own, but it's not something the group probably wants to spend a lot of time on if it happened right before throwing down with the BBEG, especially when time is an in-universe issue.
