Rules Questions

A questions for the designers.

Is there any intention of updating the rules for burrow as they are technically absent from the current core rule set?

*bump*

This was never answered. I've been asking myself this for years.

I'm FAQing this one.

It would be nice to see the rules added.

It would also be nice to see them cover things like if you can poke your head out and attack and so on.

I mean, I think the answer should be no (at least without spring attack), but I just want it to be covered.

I asked James Jacobs this in his Ask Anything thread (long before he stopped responding to rules questions), and he suggested that it should use the 3.5 version, but I wholeheartedly agree that it needs to be covered properly in the rules (and while we're at it, are there any other unusual movement types not covered?)

FAQd.

How does it interact with combat? (Such as poking your head up to attack, as noted above.) That's something that would be really helpful to know.

I do miss the ability to tunnel as a transformed caster or with a summoned critter...

Bump for a 6 year old issue. That'd be 6 years because first printing of the CRB was 6 years ago this month. Also FAQ'd.

I think using the same rules as incorporeal works for "poking out and attack". 50% miss chance, etc.

If it comes up far enough to see the PC, and is right under it (effectively in the same square) the PC might get an AoO , and also +1 for higher ground.

But those things need to be official rulings, not just adapting other rules to imagined scenarios.

How about materials you can burrow through? Do you leave a hole? Are there limitations on burrow speed based on whether it's (Su) vs (Ex), such as open hands?

Right now, the only burrow rules provided are for Earth Glide, which is (Ex) and explicitly a type of burrow. It allows for dirt, stone, and even lava, but not worked stone or metal. 3.5's burrow rules allow only for dirt burrowing. Neither states that you leave a hole, but without a burrow entry, the wording on Earth Glide has led one Venture Captain that has been asked locally to rule that a hole is left because it looks like Earth Glide is making an exception. Neither source indicates that you need to use any limbs to burrow, so you get odd questions about what can happen while burrowing. Example: can I maintain a grapple to move, then burrow with the grappled target? What happens if they break free or I release the grapple underground?

Players now have access to a full time (Su) burrow speed through Planar Focus (Monster Summoner's Handbook). As such, I would expect more of these questions to come up than have happened in the past.

Amazingly, this still appears to be an unanswered question. FAQed!

To add to the questions, is it possible for an Earth Elemental to choose to leave a tunnel behind? It looks like Earth Glide and the Burrow speed are separate abilities... for instance, could one use a summoned Earth elemental to fell a tree by undermining it from one side...?

It's probably easier to get an answer if you start an entirely new FAQ asking specific questions.
