Dungeonaday seems to be down. I can't even access the site. Does anybody know what's happening?
Yeah, I don't know what's up with it, I tried to go on this morning and got the 414 message. Just tried again, and it took my to a woman's clothing store. o_o

Could also be someone at their hosting company screwed up something. Alkara does have a presence at Alkara.org, so, to me at any rate, it looks like something I had to deal with earlier this year with a client's site (which ended up displaying a site dedicated to custom truck parts for a couple hours over one day) more so than a cybersquatter.
Don't know if this info helps, but it was down all day yesterday too. It was also down on Tuesday morning, but came back up around lunchtime.
Well, I'm trying to run a Delve PBP so that's really messed up. :(

Hey folks!
So, Dungeonaday.com uses a service provider called Subhub. It's the same service provider the site has used since Monte launched it, and prior to this (massive) problem, we've never had an issue with them.
Subhub's hosting partner, Softlayer, had a major hardware problem, and the site went down. This was not a hack or any kind of security breach, just a case of a lot of hardware going wrong all at once. Since Subhub's hosting service has been unable to fix their problem, Subhub is moving to a different hosting partner. All Subhub's data was retrieved, and is being moved to Voxel.net (who include benefits such as guaranteed 100% network uptime, advanced proactive monitoring of the servers, and the faith of clients such as the Mozilla Foundation).
Right now we're working on some DNS issues with the new hosting service, and the site is pointing to other Subhub clients. They aren't cyber-squatters, just other Subhub sites that also have messed up DNS issues. We hope to have all this resolved by the end of the day, but that's a guess, not a hard timeline.
The updates for the days the site was down won't be delayed, so people will have several days of content once we're fully back up and running, and we're working on a gift for our patrons to apologize for the outage. It's not a result of anything we did or changed, but we're still taking responsibility for it.
I'm also happy to answer any further questions people may have.

Owen, when did y'all start the DNS move? I've had delays in propagation up to 48 hours before, though typically I can access sites I have moved within a couple hours.
"Today" is the only answer I have for you. That's being handled by people who are less likely to accidentally start a global thermonuclear war when trying to play chess than I am. I know the process involved email back and forth with Subhub, and I'm not sure when the final "enter" got clicked on the process.
I am glad to hear that it is a normal (sort of), fixable problem, rather than the site being hacked or something, which is what I feared when I first got the 414 messages. Thanks for the info!
And Owen -- bravo on the War Games reference! I like it!

You are most welcome. One thing this did drive home for us is we probably need a stated mechanism for people to get Dungeonaday.com news from us when the site is down. Our normal news venue for the site is its own forums, which obviously didn't help in this case. :(

Because their host after years of performing as expected revealed themselves to be incompetent and thus DaD decided to move to someone known to be reputable and that move takes time?

I guess I should know better than to post on the internet. I still don't think it's acceptable that the site is entirely down for several days. But there have been other grievances, which I guess I'll post on the site when it is back up, since they're not really a concern of anyone but myself and Dungeonaday, and I'm not interested in a flame war.

We're pretty unhappy too, believe me. I certainly don't consider this "acceptable" and even with Subhub changing host partners, we're looking into possible alternatives. Unfortunately we haven't found one yet that will allow us to do what we do with Dungeonaday.com. That doesn't mean none exist, but since this hit us with no warning, and wasn't a result of anything we did, and Subhub's been perfect for three years, we hadn't done any groundwork for a search prior to this.
I completely understand any patron's frustration with this situation. While it isn't our fault, it sure isn't yours either, and ultimately you pay us to have a site up. Especially as it's still down on Friday, when people begin to be most likely to want to use it to run a game, I'm massively unhappy with the situation. There just isn't a faster fix in sight right now.
This is certainly a conversation we expect to have a greater length on our own forums once the site is back up, which we continue to believe and hope will be "soon," but I admit I'm not at all happy with how long soon seems to be taking.
And while I absolutely appreciate our supporters defending us on this issue, let's keep that support polite. There's a lot of very reasonable frustration going around right now, so normally innocuous comments might feel more pointed at the moment.
Thanks to everyone who is helping to spread the word, and again apologies for our patrons who aren;t getting the dungeon rooms they deserve.

What I can't help smiling about is this: If we try to log onto Dungeonaday and get the Armed Forces Investment Club, who's trying to log onto their favorite site and getting Dungeonaday? I envision some retired General trying to log onto his investments, and finding Dungeonaday. Cut to four hours later when said General is furiously running a game for five retired colleagues around the basement table, hopped up on Mountain Dew and Cheetos, trying to figure out the best way to slay the Beast Cultists.
Player 1: "Tactical Airstrike, darnit! Have the ranger hit them with arrows from afar!"
Player 2: "Darn you and your flyboy ways! The only effective strategy is an infantry charge, straight up the middle with the barbarian and the paladin in the lead!"
Player 3: "I sneak attack the darkness!"

No idea what the guys have as a benny for subscribers due to the outage, but I'm sure it will be good. Here's hoping its back to the regular URL soon.
[Update] Can't access the forums or the current map page. Some of the major menu choices on the top and upper left just lead to the investment club or 404's, but Wednesday's, Thursday's, and Friday's content is up and accessible.

Honestly I can't say, since I'm not tech savvy enough to understand just exactly when the problem began to crop up and what all it affected prior to the complete meltdown.
I *can* say if you'll drop me a line at owen (at) supergeniusgames.com, and forward your emails you sent to Hyrum, I'll make sure we look into an answer once the DNS problem has been fixed.
OK, it looks like I can now reach the DaD "temp" site, rather than the Armed Forces Investment Club (a fine organization, I'm sure, but not what I wanted), so it appears there is light at the end of the tunnel.

Don't do anything yet. We're still juggling with work-arounds and potential new architecture to try to give us more options in case of a future outage. If we settle on a new address, we'll make an announcement. :)

This sounds really fishy to me. First of all, I've had machines with what is now Softlayer (they've gone through mergers and name changes) for more than a decade at this point, and they've never provided the kind of terrible service or response Subhub is claiming.
When you have machines with them you can set up monitoring of machines or even specific services on the machines (I have it monitoring my custom servers) with notification within a minute of things going down for any reason. You can also set up backup systems so nothing gets lost even if there was a hardware failure (nobody can guarantee that won't ever happen).
A few years ago there was a fire at one of the texas datacenters... which is a pretty serious hardware failure (machines being in flames) but they got people set up with alternate machines and gave them compensation for any lost uptime very swiftly.

More than likely what is happening is that the machine the domain is pointing to doesn't have a record of the domain you're asking for, so its serving you up what it knows it has. Its not that whenever you go to ANY site on that machine you get a RANDOM site, its that sites the machine doesn't think it has heard of, are ignored and instead you're served a site it does know it has (though it should be the same one each time).
If, for example, you connected to Paizo's webserver but claimed you were looking for www.jamesmartin.com, you'd still get the paizo webpage likely as not (it can be configured otherwise, but y'know..)
Getting a site, but not the right site, is also something that heavily suggests this is the direct webhost, not the hardware providers, that are the ones screwing up.

This behavior only began in the past two days. before that there was a lack of any and all Subhub sites. And it's been three different sites pointed to over the past couple of days, which are (at least supposedly) DNS issues.
Softlayer has had ample opportunity to present a different version of events and has not chosen to do so, so I can only go with Subhub's. (And as of the time of this posting Softlayer's own website remains totally down.)
Working fine for me as of this morning. I was not able to access the most recent version of the map, but otherwise found no issues.
I can access the rooms but not the handouts.

My main point has been that I suspect you're getting jerked around by your provider, and the people involved in the DAD project are folks I respect and would rather not see having problems.
Neither Softlayer's site (www.softlayer.com) nor their DNS systems have been down in the past weeks - I have been using both without any issue. I'd notice in a huge hurry if the DNS system was having problems, as my income relies quite heavily on the availability of my internet services.
As for Softlayer not telling you otherwise... two things. First of all, you're not their customer - you're a customer of one of their customers and are unlikely to be someone they'd deal with directly. Second of all, if they're not *having* any relevant issues, they won't be reporting anything to contradict Subhub's statements of self-absolution. I have machines in the Dallas, Houston, and Seattle data centers, and have seen no reports of hardware or DNS failures in the past month.
In the end, I suppose it all comes down to whether or not you're happy with and comfortable with your service provider (and whether the faith is justified). If you are, then all is well... until it isn't again.
I can get to the site, but theres no place for subscribers to enter. So you can read advertisements for it,whats its all about, how much it costs, but not actually read content, at the moment.
Not sure if this is intentional, but if so, Id suggest whomever made that call get to work on providing the content thats already been paid for before you try and lure in new subscribers.

In the end, I suppose it all comes down to whether or not you're happy with and comfortable with your service provider (and whether the faith is justified). If you are, then all is well... until it isn't again.
Even if this incident makes them very unhappy, it will take time to properly research an alternative and then migrate all the data and functionality to a new host. But I wouldn't expect them to formally announce such a move until it was set in stone.
I suspect before they get into investigate that they'll concentrate on getting the site up and going again.
