First Pathfinder character, wizards questions

Rules Questions

Hello all. Got a question about building my first Pathfinder character (I've been using the SRD site).

He's starting out as a lvl 2 human wizard, with 18 INT. So by my calculations last night I determined that he had 16 ranks to be distributed, but now in the clean light of morning I can only come up with the math for 14 ranks.

Also, regarding feats- Can I only use bonus feats to get metamagic feats and their ilk? The SRD site isn't clear.

Also, I'm a bit confused on crafting staves. I know I need the Craft: Staves Magic Item creation feat.... (which I can only get as a bonus feat? See above), but at what level can I make a staff once I have that feat? I've read and reread, and it seems to me that I need to be lvl 11 to make a staff.

Gracias, muchachos.

You actually get some choice about how many skill ranks you have. Each time you level up in your preferred class, you can gain an extra hit point, or an extra skill point. You also get one extra skill rank per level for being human and four per level for INT. I think 14 is right for you if you take the extra HP.

Normal feats can be used to get metamagic feats as long as you meet the qualifications (eg, being level 11).
Crafting is not normally used by low level characters.

Skills: Wizard, 2/level; Int +4/level; human +1/level; favored class +1/level (or 1hp/level)

Metamagic: When you have a plain feat slot, you can take any feat you qualify for. The bonus slots restrict what feats you can choose, but that's just for bonus slots.

Craft: Yes, you need Craft Stave. Note that it's prerequisite is caster level 11, not class level 11, so beware multiclassing. Thus, yes, you have to be 11th level. But then again, for lower-level spells you probably want a wand anyways.

Alright, so let's make sure I've got my math straight like I did last night.

Being a wizard: 2+ Int Modifer (4 in this case)= 6 skill ranks per level. He's level 2, so that's 12.

Being human: +1 for each level. He's level 2, so that's 2.

The favored class: +1 for each level. Level 2, so that's 2. I think this is the part I was forgetting last night.

2(2+4)+2(1)+2(1)= 16. Good.

We seem to have some disagreement regarding whether I can use regular feats for metamagic, etc. Anyone else? A citation perhaps?

Also, I've looked and looked, and is there anything on the SRD site that says how many languages you know starting out? I figured that it would be Common + Int Modifier, so in this case Common + 4 more languages.

Thanks so much for you replies, they've been quite helpful.

No, we agree on the metamagic. Regular feats can be used for anything including metamagic. It's only bonus feats that have restrictions.

Generating a Character: Step 2-Pick Your Race: Each race lists the languages your character automatically knows, as well as a number of bonus languages. A character knows a number of additional bonus languages equal to his or her Intelligence modifier.

Humans: Languages: Humans begin play speaking Common. Humans with high Intelligence scores can choose any languages they want (except secret languages, such as Druidic).

You also learn a new language for each rank you put in Linguistics. There's a list of common languages there also.

Matthew- ah, I was confused because the site specifically says that a wizard is NOT restricted to metamagic, item creation, or Spell Mastery when choosing a bonus feat.

Grick- thank you for that. I can't believe I missed it; also thanks for reminding me about the additional language for each rank in Linguistics.
