5-Foot Step and Move Actions

Rules Questions

So, I was looking at the rules for a 5-foot step, and I had a question.

Take 5-Foot Step

You can move 5 feet in any round when you don't perform any other kind of movement. Taking this 5-foot step never provokes an attack of opportunity. You can't take more than one 5-foot step in a round, and you can't take a 5-foot step in the same round that you move any distance.

The emphasis is mine.

So, can I take a 5-foot step in a round in which I use a move action which does not result in any sort of movement?

For example, could my Gunslinger with Rapid Reload take a 5-foot step away from an adjacent enemy, then reload his pistol as a Move Action, and finally fire the pistol at the enemy? Or does the "any other kind of movement" clause refer to Move Actions, in general?

Yes, you can.

(As long as there are no other reasons that preclude a 5-foot step)

Rules, to back up Midnight Angel's correct response:

Move Action: "If you move no actual distance in a round (commonly because you have swapped your move action for one or more equivalent actions), you can take one 5-foot step either before, during, or after the action."

and

Move: "The simplest move action is moving your speed. If you take this kind of move action during your turn, you can't also take a 5-foot step."

Due to some incredibly obtuse discussion I've seen on this topic before, I was nervous as to what I'd discover in this thread. Imagine my relief when the answers given turned out to be correct!

Is standing up considered movement? For example, could you stand up and then take a 5' step?

Stand Up

Standing up from a prone position requires a move action and provokes attacks of opportunity.

It doesn't say that standing up is movement, so I'd say that you could 5' step after standing up, by RAW.

Yes, I think so.

Actions in Combat shows that standing up is separate from "Move".

We've always just said that you can reload or draw a weapon as part of a move action, whether that move action be a five foot step, a running charge, walking, or just standing there and taking the move with out moving.

I probably should re-read the move section...

Yeah, perhaps you should, since half of the "move actions" you listed aren't actually move actions. :P
