The Far Wanderer, you are amazing! Thanks for the info. It still isn't perfect for me, but it is a heckuvalot better than acrobat. =)

Glad I could help.

To The Far Wanderer: Switching preview to 32bit worked for me as well. This looks like the duct-tape pdf repair for now. Thank you so much for the help! Acrobat was getting rather cumbersome.

Yes, Acrobat was a messy alternative.

I found a work around which seems to solve the problem:

Right click on Preview in the Applications folder then click on Get Info.

Click in the tick box for 'Open in 32-bit mode'.

And that's it. Solved the problem for me...

You. Are. Awesome.

Thanks for posting this. Now apple just need to make the necessary adjustments so the workaround is not necessary.

I have an open support case with Apple over it.
I installed acrobat, but it really sucks: it doesn't remember view settings, it doesn't support full screen (which I need on my tiny 13" Air), the UI is not intuitive.

And with that, acrobat is in the trash!

Thanks.

I discovered a trick for those who like to view two pages side-by-side. The books start on a right side page, so if you display two up, you get what would be the front and back of the same piece of paper in the physical book. However, with preview, you can make a duplicate with a blank page before or after the first page, and any pages that the layout guys intended to have side-by-side (like the chapter opening artwork) are seamlessly side-by-side.

From what I can tell, it has to do with the indexing that is done on the PDFs to make them quickly searchable.

When I open a Paizo PDF in Preview in the native 64 bit, it maxes out both cores of my CPU, but Preview is only about 60% of that. the other 40% or so is 'mdworker', which is Mac OS X's indexing process. I'm not sure why it works OK in 32 bit mode, but it does.

Also, a quick tip: I created a copy of Preview.app and renamed it Preview32.app. I changed the setting on that one to open in 32 bit. That way I can have the native 64 bit version handy without having to change the settings back and forth.

This worked for me. This was destroying the battery on my MBA. Thanks! Did we lose the Apple guy? For reference, this was the Jade Regent Player's Guide

Apple released 10.7.3 today. It seems to have fixed the issues with Preview.app, but I only tested a couple of PDFs (APG and GMG). I’ll know for sure when I start prepping later today or tomorrow.

Excellent. I'll update and try this out.

Ok... just finished the update and it is massively better. I flipped through the Broken Moon PDF at full speed and it just flies. The fan on my MacBook doesn't even kick on. On my system anyhow it seems faster than running it in 32 bit mode.

Thanks for the interim fix Wanderer, that worked great, but I'm happy to be done with it.

Looks like the 10.7.3 update fixed things for me, too. Scrolling is not quite as fast on my MBA as on my MBP, but Preview is no longer chewing a massive hole in my CPU. Am quite pleased about this as I definitely want to use all my PDFs at the table without having to lug Acrobat with me.
