Female Quarter-Orc Sorcerer

Yes, yes you can.

And I officially nominate Rhost's clan to be Nos.

Male Human Cleric 10

Rhost is Clan: Awesome.

Or possibly a masochistic Toreador obsessed with cooking things he can never eat.

Male Human Cleric 10

Opinion has been changed. With Mel now on this one.

Wait, this latest incident made you decide he isn't a Toreador?

Male Human Cleric 10

Good point! I go back to my original opinion.

So, just as an FYI, over the next few days I'm going to be moving across town. I don't expect it to disrupt my posting schedule nearly as much as going on vacation did, but it will probably slow me down a little.

In brighter news, the life of our Gunslinger has finally settled enough for him to join the game in the near future. He is well-known to Shalelu, but passes through the area infrequently enough that aside from her, only Myriana has really had much chance of having met him previously.

Since both of our potential monks have regretfully informed me that their lives are too hectic to join a PBP right now, and I've declared that those I've heard nothing from for a month cannot now join, once Tollin joins, the party seems likely to be set for the forseeable future.

Female Quarter-Orc Sorcerer

Woot? Now if I survive the current scene sane all it good? :)

Kalimac Proudfoot wrote:
Can I go on record as saying this is the 901st post of this thread?

I was thinking of making a little note to commemorate the 2,000th post on the IC thread, but that seems so quaint and outdated now. I mean, that was all the way back on Thursday.

Also a Kalimac post, incidentally.

Human Ranger

Kalimac, Ruler of the Milestone Post Club :)

Male Halfling Cavalier 10

Kalimac also has the 1,000th post. Yes, you may all bask in awe of my milestone-y-ness.

Female Quarter-Orc Sorcerer

His timing is apparently flawless :)

Note -- both Myriana and Liothonae are providing the Caravan with 1 Cargo space worth of consumable foodstuffs. I believe the plan is that Myriana's will be consumed by the time you get to Brinewall (1 week) and Liothonae's will be consumed one week after that (2 weeks).

Since they're going to be gone fairly soon, I don't think they need to be noted on the sheet, but it should be born in mind that the Caravan temporarily has 2 less cargo spaces than appears.

Is this why Kalimac has taken the first unconfirmed critical, the first confirmed critical, the first friendly fire?

Good virtue/flaw pair. I am envious that I didn't think of it first.

Gonna be a bummer when we get to first raise dead use.

So, I hate to ask, but feel that I must. At which point can the sick no longer do their caravan jobs? Currently? Just want an idea of how screwed we are....

Male Halfling Cavalier 10

Good question. For driving, that's basically Handle Animals, which is a Charisma based skill. I figure Kalimac can do that as long as he can continue sitting in the driver's seat.

Scouting is Wisdom based, so technically as long as they can keep moving.

The big questions is what sort of DC we're looking at. Kalimac has a good Fort save, even after -3 Con. As long as I can avoid auto-fails like this last one, recovery should be coming soon.

As far as I can tell from the rules, you can no longer do your Caravan job when you are unconscious or dead.

The only conditions that would affect Caravan jobs are ones that directly invalidate the prerequisite for them -- i.e. if someone's Wisdom or Charisma dropped so low that they could no longer cast spells, they would no longer be able to take the Spellcaster job.

Need to catch a little bit of sleep and then pull a long Inventory day. Will probably be many, many hours before I can post again.

no worries, that's what flex time is for ;)

So, my official Moving Day is tomorrow (Monday), and as I'm going to bed now it is likely that my posts over the next 24 hours or so will be sporadic at best and nonexistent at worst.

After that, I will hopefully resume normal posting, although much depends on whether we can get the internet connection in our new place working without a problem (never a sure proposition in these parts.) I can, if need be, post from my cell phone, but if that is necessary my NPC's are likely to grow extremely terse until I can get back to working from a computer. Well, except for Shalelu, of course, who will seem perfectly normal.

SPECIAL ABILITIES
Deadeye (Ex) At 1st level, the gunslinger can resolve an attack against touch AC instead of normal AC when firing beyond her firearm's first range increment. Performing this deed costs 1 grit point per range increment beyond the first. The gunslinger still takes the –2 penalty on attack rolls for each range increment beyond the first when she performs this deed.
Deeds Gunslingers spend grit points to accomplish deeds. Most deeds grant the gunslinger some momentary bonus or effect, but there are some that provide longer lasting effects. Some deeds stay in effect as long as a gunslinger has at least 1 grit point. The following is the list of base gunslinger deeds. A gunslinger can only perform deeds of her level or lower. Unless otherwise noted, a deed can be performed multiple successive times, as long as the appropriate amount of grit is spent to perform the deed.
Focused Aim (+3) At 1st level, as a swift action, the mysterious stranger can spend 1 grit point to gain a bonus on all firearm damage rolls equal to her Charisma modifier (minimum 1) with all firearm attacks she makes until the end of her turn. At 7th level, when she uses the dead shot deed, she multiplies this bonus by the number of hits she made while rolling the Dead Shot attack. This deed replaces the quick clear deed.
Grit (Ex) A gunslinger makes her mark upon the world with daring deeds. Some gunslingers claim they belong to a mystical way of the gun, but it's more likely that the volatile nature of firearms simply prunes the unlucky and careless from their ranks. Whatever the reason, all gunslingers have grit. In game terms, grit is a fluctuating measure of a
gunslinger’s ability to perform amazing actions in combat. At the start of each day, a gunslinger gains a number of grit points equal to her Wisdom (Cha for me)modifier(minimum 1). Her grit goes up or down throughout the day, but usually cannot go higher than her Wisdom modifier(minimum 1),though some feats and magic items may affect this maximum. A gunslinger spends grit to accomplish deeds (see below),and regains grit in the following ways. Critical Hit with a Firearm: Each time the gunslinger confirms a critical hit with a firearm attack while in the heat of combat, she regains 1 grit point. Confirming a critical hit on a helpless or unaware creature or on a creature that has fewer Hit Dice than half the gunslinger’s character level does not restore grit. Killing Blow with a Firearm: When the gunslinger reduces a creature to 0 or fewer hit points with a firearm attack while in the heat of combat, she regains 1 grit point. Destroying an unattended object, reducing a helpless or unaware creature to 0 or fewer hit points, or reducing a creature that has fewer Hit Dice than half the gunslinger’s character level to 0 or fewer hit points does not restore any grit.
Gunslinger Initiative (Ex) At 3rd level, as long as the gunslinger has at least 1 grit point, she gains the following benefits. First, she gains a +2 bonus on initiative checks. Furthermore, if she has the Quick Draw feat, her hands are free and unrestrained, and the firearm is not hidden, she can draw a single firearm as part of the initiative check.
Gunslinger's Dodge (Ex) At 1st level, the gunslinger gains an uncanny knack for getting out of the way of ranged attacks. When a ranged attack is made against the gunslinger, she can spend 1 grit point to move 5 feet as an immediate action; doing so grants the gunslinger a +2 bonus to AC against the triggering attack. This movement
is not a 5-foot step, and provokes attacks of opportunity. Alternatively, the gunslinger can drop prone to gain a +4 bonus to AC against the triggering attack. The gunslinger can only perform this deed while wearing medium or light armor, and while carrying no more than a light load.
Gunsmithing You know the secrets of repairing and restoring firearms.
Benefit: If you have access to a gunsmith's kit, you can create and restore firearms, craft bullets, and mix black powder for all types of firearms. You do not need to make a Craft check to create firearms and ammunition or to restore firearms. Crafting Firearms: You can craft any early firearm for a cost in raw materials equal to half the price of the firearm. At your GM’s discretion, you can craft advanced firearms
for a cost in raw materials equal to half the price of the firearm. Crafting a firearm in this way takes 1 day of work for every 1,000 gp of the firearm’s price (minimum 1 day). Crafting Ammunition: You can craft bullets, pellets, and black powder for a cost in raw materials equal to 10% of the price. If you have at least 1 rank in Craft (alchemy), you can craft alchemical cartridges for a cost in raw materials equal to half the price of the cartridge. At your GM’s discretion, you can craft metal cartridges for a cost in raw materials equal to half the cost of the cartridge. Crafting bullets, black powder, or cartridges takes 1 day of work for every 1,000 gp of ammunition (minimum 1 day). Restoring a Broken Firearm: Each day, with an hour’s worth of work, you can use this feat to repair a single firearm with the broken condition. You can take time during a rest period to restore a broken firearm with this feat. Special: If you are a gunslinger, this feat grants the following additional benefit. You can use this feat to repair and restore your initial, battered weapon. It costs 300 gp and 1 day of work to upgrade it to a masterwork firearm of its type.
Pistol-whip (Ex) At 3rd level, the gunslinger can make a surprise melee attack with the butt or handle of her firearm as a standard action. When she does, she is considered to be proficient with the firearm as a melee weapon and gains a bonus on the attack and damage rolls equal to the enhancement bonus of the firearm. The damage dealt by the pistol-whip is of the bludgeoning type, and is determined
by the size of the firearm. One-handed firearms deal 1d6 points of damage (1d4 if wielded by Small creatures) and two-
handed firearms deal 1d10 points of damage (1d8 if wielded by Small creatures). Regardless of the gunslinger’s size, the
critical multiplier of this attack is 20/×2. If the attack hits, the gunslinger can make a combat maneuver check to knock
the target prone as a free action. Performing this deed costs 1 grit point.
Point Blank Shot +1 to attack and damage rolls with ranged weapons at up to 30 feet.
Precise Shot You don't get -4 to hit when shooting or throwing into combat.
Rapid Reload: Pistol You can reload fast with one type of Crossbow.
Rescued: Shalelu (Ex) +1 vs foes threatening rescuer.
Utility Shot At 3rd level, if the gunslinger has at least 1 grit point, she can perform all of the following utility shots. Each utility shot can be applied to any single attack with a firearm, but the gunslinger must declare the utility shot she is using before firing the shot. [b]Blast Lock:[b] The gunslinger makes an attack roll against a lock within the first range increment of her firearm. A Diminutive lock usually has AC 7, and larger locks have a lower AC. The lock gains a bonus to its AC against this attack based on its quality. A simple lock has a +10 bonus to AC, an average lock has a +15 bonus to AC, a good lock has a +20 bonus to AC, and a superior lock has a +30 bonus to AC. Arcane lock grants a +10 bonus to the AC of a lock against this attack. On a hit, the lock is destroyed, and the object can be opened as if it were unlocked. On a miss, the lock is destroyed, but the object is jammed and still considered locked. It can still be unlocked by successfully performing this deed, by using the Disable Device skill, or with the break DC, though the DC for either break or Disable Device or the AC increases by 10. A key, combination, or similar mechanical method of unlocking the lock no longer works, though knock can still be employed to bypass the lock, and the creator of an arcane lock can still bypass the wards of that spell.Shoot Unattended Object: The gunslinger makes an attack roll against a Tiny or smaller unattended object within the first range increment of her firearm. A Tiny unattended object has an AC of 5, a Diminutive unattended object has an AC of 7, and a Fine unattended object has an AC of 11. On a hit, the gunslinger does not damage the object with the shot, but can move it up to 15 feet farther away from the shot’s origin. On a miss, she damages the object normally. Stop Bleeding: The gunslinger makes a firearm attack and then presses the hot barrel against herself or an adjacent creature to staunch a bleeding wound. Instead of dealing damage, the shot ends a single bleed condition affecting the creature. The gunslinger does not have to make an attack roll when performing the deed in this way; she can instead shoot the firearm into the air, but that shot still uses up ammunition normally.

Tollin, once you make the minor adjustments, we discussed, your character will be APPROVED.

When you make your first post on the game thread, please include a description of your character. You can look at the very first batch of posts in the game thread to get a feel for it, if you like.

You will be reaching the Caravan on Day 11 of its journey. The torrential rainstorm finally broke just a few hours before.

As another note, there will only be a few days left at this point to insult Shalelu (or gift or insult any other significant NPC) at 3rd level if you want to (you won't go up to fourth level that quickly, but it will become unfeasible for in-game reasons.) So I'd recommend getting one in, at least for her, as soon as you reasonably can.

If you're not familiar with the concept of Flexible Time that's been introduced for this game, please let me know -- it's important for PBP play and a little unusual if you're used to tabletop.

In case you didn't see my recent post, I'm going to be moving across town tomorrow, so GM posting on your first day is going to be limited if it happens at all. Welcome to the lion's den of PC interaction. Guys, be gentle with Tollin's player at the start, it's his first PBP game, although he is an experienced tabletop gamer.

Yeah ... except you guys are killing me. Killing me. I go away for one measly long workday and now have the following epic series of responses required:
  • Rhost - Day 7 & 8 Discussion
  • Liothonae - Day 9 Discussion
  • Ill Ameiko - Day of Day 10 Discussion
  • Melinda - Night of Day 10 Discussion
  • and now, Tollin - Day 11 Discussion and full character introductions

I love and adore you all. You are killing me here :-)

As Henry Cabot Henhouse III was fond of saying, "you knew the job was dangerous when you took it."

Guys, I'd like to request that you make significant edit to your posts as little as possible. Changing a few words, or correcting a minor error of some kind, or adding a little OOC reactive comment is fine, but it sometimes takes hours for edited posts to show up for me. If you want to roll dice and then react based on what you have rolled, for example, or add or change some significant amount of text, please just make a second post. That's fine.

I have been informed, by the way, the using the "preview" button will actually show you the results of your rolls, so you can respond to them in a single post without an edit.

Yes, "Preview" is your friend. I normally use it to check that I've closed all my [b] tags, etc. Good to know about the dice roll results, though.

Male Halfling Cavalier 10

I've actually caught a lot of badly done spoiler tags that I've almost done. Spoiler tags that don't work are no fun.

Male Human Cleric 10

Remove Curse is a domain spell which I'll get at... 5th level.

Foiled again!

Male Half-elf Barbarian

"Preview" taught me that you can't nest spoiler tags. I also endorse it.

And though only two of you probably noticed, my work hours have temporarily shifted enough that my sleep hours have shifted, so I'm running closer to standard Eastern Time Zone than usual. I still miss the big cluster-posts that come late Hawaii time / early Germany time, but now I miss them by hours instead of hour.

Incidentally -- the question has come up as to whether Cook should more properly be a Craft of Profession skill. I have reread the rules on the subject, and despite a certain lack of clarity and a little internal contradiction, I believe the intention of the rules is that Cook, including the preparation of food, is more properly a Profession skill. Craft (food) could also be taken, but it would actually be a more difficult and complicated way of cooking dinner. This contradicts what I may have told some people earlier. Sorry about that.

The misunderstanding came mainly from the fact that the Craft skill is a hot mess of a rules morass from which few return with their sanity intact, as many of you are discovering.

Kyrademon wrote:

We'll be as gentle as we can be. But I do pity the wall of text he's looking at after his last post yesterday. Tollin, I apologize for the reading you're in for. We may end up killing you, like we are killing Hrithik.

(What I said about alcohol and Craft vs. Profession still stands, however, even though it is possible to take Profession Brewer. Making alcohol clearly and definitely falls under Craft Alchemy in the rules. Morass, I tells ya.)

A mess that I have to deal with way too often.

There are reasons that Mel has NO crafting skills.

It is the first time EVER that I have nothing I need urgently respond to, as all the PC's are happily talking amongst themselves.
