Carnivyx |
"My name is Carnivyx, kind sir." she smiles as his lips brush against her skin...
He'd surely blanch paler than me if he'd known where these hands were a few hours earlier.
"But my close associates call me Carni. You may feel free to address me as such as well if it suits you." her eyes brighten as she speaks, and she seems to become more relaxed in the young man's company. Brushing back an errant strand of black hair and leaning slightly forward. "I would be in your debt if you would aid me in introducing myself...er, Ourselves," she hastily corrected, "I have a tendency to make the occasional social blunder when dealing with certain castes."
As she starts to rise from her uncomfortable chair, she seems to balk for just a moment, "Manners, manners... I do apologize Sir, but what is your name?"
Kragath Lightbringer |
Kragath thinks to himself, "Hanspur...Hanspur...I know I've heard of this deity before...perhaps it will come to me later."
Kragath turns to the dwarf and responds, "I too have heard these rumors, unfortunately. It seems the people of Issia and Rostland are on the verge of cleaving the nation in two once again, but I am not one to speculate on such matters. What I know for a fact is that trade between the two nations is very tense at the moment. But given our position this far South, I could not imagine that the Swordlords are planning some sort of direct action against either of them. Whatever it is they have called us here for must be another matter."
Kragath looks around the room again with a determined look. "I was hoping to see someone who could possibly clarify this invitation for me, but I figure the Swordlords intend to keep the matter private until they decide otherwise."
Gathien Toran |
1. Why are you interested in working with the Swordlords of Brevoy?
Gathien seeks to prove himself, having been underestimated his entire life -- and the potential to do something truly heroic resonates within him. In addition, he has an inherent trust in martial orders, as it was the local soldiers who provided him with solace from his parents' home in his youth.
2. What is your motivation to reclaim the Stolen Lands?
As someone who was raised a Rostlander who is also the son of former Chelish slaves, Gathien has a natural distaste for those Issians who desire to impose their will over the southerners. Further, having taken on many of his mother's dreams, Gathien seeks to help establish a nation in which halflings are full citizens and free, one which would serve as a beacon of hope.
3. What will your character contribute to the group?
Despite his small size, Gathien is an able warrior who would be able to serve as a front-line combatant (and a secondary caster, below). In addition to this, however, Gathien's agility and small size make him a useful skirmisher/scout, and he is a very likable fellow (high Charisma) who, given time, could be a negotiator and seeker of information.
4. What are your plans for your character mechanically?
The intent is to take levels as an elemental kin barbarian with the elemental rage powers, and then Oracle (of the Flame Mystery) towards becoming a Rage Prophet -- this is the mechanical effect of his elemental bloodline manifesting, despite his complete lack of arcane ability.
5. What are your plans for your character from a story-perspective?
Gathien, more than anything, seeks to prove himself -- first and foremost to himself and the internalized criticisms/disapproval of this father. As such, he will be attempting to achieve fame and glory for his martial ability and to make a name for himself such that even his parents would have to take notice. As such, he would love nothing more than to help estabish a nation where halflings can remain be free, and to serve as a General or Champion to those lands.
A young halfling, small by even halfing standards, enters the room and looks about a bit nervously. Seeing the numerous other adventurers, with their arms and equipment at the ready, he sighs, worried that he will be passed over once again, as he was so many times before. He begins to lower his gaze until some small spark of pride within him ignites. "This time it will be different,"he promises himself, "after all, I have a recommendation from Staran, if nothing else." With that, his pale green eyes start to sparkle and he strides into the room purposefully, taking a crystal flute of sweet-smelling wine as he passes a servant.
Seeing the knot of people gathering around the dwarf, the young halfling approaches, listening intently to the conversation, saying little and simply observing, nodding when polite. Finally, he speaks in respone to Kragath's comments, "Indeed, my own invitation gave little detail, other than offering a chance to play an important role."
Teion & Tor |
Tor leans forward to sniff at Kragath's hand, not smelling any food, he slumps back with a disatisfied look.
Teion laughs at kragath's question. "Ha, though we are twins, Tor here spent more time raising me than anything else. he's taught me everything I know of the arcane arts, despite my being a less than stellar pupil"
Teion's attention is suddenly drawn to the weasel and they lock glances for a moment.
"Forgive my poor manners, may i present my brother and tutor in all things arcane, Tor Vansume."
Those watching are pretty sure the weasel actually bows when introduced.
Noticing the Halfling for the first time, "Greeting good fellow, join us as we attempt to unravel the intrigue that so often plagues these lands"
Ridley Blix |
Character is still in progress, but the basics are up, and the questions are answered in the profile. Changed her around so she is no longer a synthesist.
A tall female comes into the mansions hall, clade in the ornate mail of a lord and carying sword and shield, but nothing else. Standing by the hearth she extends both gauntlented hands to the armth of the fire, rubbing them as though they were flesh and blood.
Minutes later a tiny figure darts into the room from a servants entry. Lithe and grinning mischeviously, she makes her way to the hearth as well, tucking her shirt tales back into her breaches all the way. Climbing into one of the human sized chairs, she signals to a servant carying water. "How long until the boar is served lad? I've spent the last while working up quite the apetite." As she speaks, a flushed serving girl comes into the room through the same entrance. She carries a shaky tray of wine glasses and a lingering grin that speaks of thoughts that distract one from their work. As she happens by the armored figure plucks a stray twig of straw from the girl's hair.
"Have you no shame Ridley?" The armored woman asks, her voice revealing the smile her helm hides.
Ignoring the question, Ridley sips her water and continues to grin, occassionally looking over her shoulder to catch the eye of a particular server.
Kragath Lightbringer |
"Twins? This weasel is your brother? Is he a shapeshifter or has he fallen victim of a spell?" Upon witnessing the weasel's human like response to it's introduction, Kragath in turn bows his head slightly in the "brothers" direction.
"But yes, in response to the nature of the invitations, I am beginning to suspect that..." Kragath suddenly realizes that the voice that just spoke was not that of either of his current companions at the table. When the elf addresses someone else, Kragath notices a tuft of hair poking slightly over the edge of the table and rises slightly to look upon the individual that had just responded.
"Oh, greetings friend, I had not noticed your arrival! Forgive my lack of manners. Feel free to join us at the table. My name is Kragath Lightblade, and my friend here is Rorgrym Khazhugar. And this gentleman..." Kragath pauses a moment, and then embarrasingly continues, "It would seem the excitement and activity of the evening has totally destroyed what manners I have, for I have not inquired as to your name, Master Elf."
Compose yourself Lightblade! You were trained to handle courtly intrigue, and you can't even hold a simple polite conversation? How are you going to fulfill Abadar's plans for you if you can't even converse properly!
Kragath observes those around him to see if anyone has taken offense to his lack of etiquette, then seats himself once again.
Once the halfling has taken his seat and the Elf introduced himself, Kragath resumes speaking. "Now where was I...Oh yes! The invitations. Yes I had started to suspect that those who called us here had sent out the same invitation to everyone present. Given the large number of individuals from an obvious variety of fields, to handwrite individualized invitations would have taken weeks. And the penmanship of the invitation I received was definately not what I had expected."
Alexite Ratarion |
dotting for interest, I'll post a concept later once I'm home again.
I'm not sure yet what, but maybe some sort of sorcerer, or something similar.
Since you said you allow Words of Power, I decided to give that a try, since it interested me how that would work out, ever since I read about it. So I'll be playing an Wordcaster Sorcerer (most likely Infernal or Pit touched bloodline - don't worry, won't be evil. Probably NG actually, see background)
I know, he's another human, but the human alternate class ability is just too sweet to not take for this concept, and another race wouldn't exactly fit the background I have in mind either. Also humans are with 90% or so the most numerous of all races in Golarion anyway. While I'm in europe my posting habits match the EST timezone more, and yes, I'm quite capable of posting multiple times a day.
Alexite Ratarion was born in Cheliax as a child of one of the many devil worshipping noble families. From infancy his family and their infernal masters had great plans for him, teaching him primordial and archaic magic since he was young. He doesn't exactly know what those plans for him were, if he was supposed to usurp the throne or lead an army of hellspawn, but he always had a feeling it was something big and utterly evil.
Even at a young age he was forced to do terrible things and swear horrible oaths to dark forces. He didn't know better, he tells himself these days, he had to do it, or they would have killed him.
The older he got the more he despised his so called destiny and the devils that his family had made a pact with. One night he packed his things and slipped out of the family estate. He hated the fact that he had to slit the throats of two of the guards, but it had to be done, otherwise he would never have made it out. And he knew what the fiends would do to him if he was caught, so that was not an option anymore.
He travelled for a long time, moving far to the north-east from his homeland, where he hoped noone would ever find him again, and where he could study his use of magic in case he they would and he has to defend himself. He uses the name Alex now and keeps his family name a secret.
1. Why are you interested in working with the Swordlords of Brevoy?
He arrived in the region a while ago, and has run out of nearly all the money he took with him in the meantime, and he obviously won't get any more from his family's coffers. So when he heard that the Swordlords are looking for people willing to explore the wilderness to the south, he decided to take the job. The chances of meeting people that would recognize him for what he is or that are actually hunting him are alot less likely in the wilderness and maybe he will find some ancient ruins that will improve his understanding of the forces that power his magic.
2. What is your motivation to reclaim the Stolen Lands?
None. Sorry. Unless "because he gets paid to" counts. At least for now I don't think the PCs know thats the plan anyway, they're just explorers for now.
3. What will your character contribute to the group?
Spells. Lots of them. And since he's a wordcaster hopefully more versatility in his spells than a standard caster. Also since he has high charisma score, and from his background he would make an optimal party face I think.
4. What are your plans for your character mechanically?
Go full out Sorcerer to level 20. Thats the plan for now at least, if roleplay wise his motivation shifts, he might multiclass into a PrC or another base class.
5. What are your plans for your character from a story-perspective?
He is still on the run and possibly bound by some of the eldritch oaths and rituals he was forced to swear and perform. His primary goal is survival. Secondary is to cut those oaths or at least make sure they won't come back at him. Third to kill the devil that practically rules his family (long time goal :) ). All of this might change over the course of the AP, as I have no real clue whats going to happen down the road.
A character sheet will follow soon, the words of power are still new to me, so it takes a bit longer to get familiar with all the options.
Roleplay:
The young man, maybe in his early twenties enters the room and pulls the hood of his cape back, revealing long, fiery red hair, held together with a leather cord at the nape of his neck.
He smiles a bit as his gaze wanders through the crowded room. So much like home and yet so different all at the same time. He hates to admit it to himself but he does miss the comforts of home. But here noone would be sacrificed today, and that is something he certainly wouldn't miss.
He grabs a goblet of wine from a passing servant and heads to the nearest group of people. Quite the diverse group he thinks to himself, a human, a dwarf and a half elf... that's almost like the beginning of a bad joke. (yes, Kragath, Rorgrym and Teion)
He waits for the right moment and then nods his head in greeting. "Good evening gentlemen. This gathering is quite nice, isn't it. Better than I would have expected from this place. You may call me Alex, at your service."
Kragath Lightbringer |
Redeem yourself Kragath. Try acting like a proper vassal of Abadon for a change.
Kragath rises at the arrival of another at their table. Once introduced, Kragath bows slightly in return. "Welcome Alex. My name is Kragath Lightblade. Allow me to arrange for further seating."
Kragath signals to a servant and states, "Young lad, it would seem we have run out of seating at this table. Could you arrange for more seats to be brought out to us? It would be much appreciated, and you have my thanks in advance." Kragath hands a couple coins to the lad and makes room for more to join him at his table, while maintaining a good field of vision over as much of the Hall as he can.
Teion & Tor |
the joke gets worse when you add a weasel and a halfling......
Teion sighs, a sad look in his eyes. "While in Kyonin, my brother and I were tutored in the arcane arts. One day there was an *cough* accident, and he disappeared. It is only recently that we have been reunited."
Taking a moment to regain his composure, with the aid of some wine, Teion continues.
"But enough of the past, we have a great potential ahead of us. Teion, of House Vasume, and no apology is necessary, as I failed to properly introduce myself."
Gathien Toran |
"Well met, and apologies for simply leaping into your conversation... These invitations intrigue me... and I imagine we were all brought here for the same purpose, even if we may each have our own reasons."
Gathien shifts in his seat to provide room for the newcomers, greeting each of them and offering his small hand.
He then turns back to Teion's tale, while thinking to himself, Trust arcane magic to ruin a family...
"I do not mean to pry, Teion, but surely there must be a way to break the enchantment afflicting your brother? I admit that I was not the best student of such things, nor my father the most patient teacher, but surely something can be done?"
Alexite Ratarion |
Yes the halfling joined while I was typing, sneaky little thing :)
Alexite smiles and waits for the requested seat. When it arrives he gathers his cloak to the side to sit down, revealing fine threads below, finer than one would expect from an ordinary adventurer.
"Ah, thank you good sir. Apologies for my rough introduction, I'm still getting used to the customs around here."
He turns to the half-elf and his weasel, having overheard the last part of their conversation. "That must have been quite the unusual accident, if it isn't possible to revert him back to his normal form"
Jonas Medvyed |
Jonas of the House Medvyed, dear Carni. Jonas bows once again as he repeats his name. He offers his hand to help the lady up and precedes to walk up to the growing group of people. As he walks, Jonas smiles and whispers,
Once Jonas gets to the gathering group he says Since introductions seem to be the order of the evening. Gentlemen, allow me introduce the young lady Carnivyx, who wished to converse with this diverse group. Jonas gestures grandly to Cernivyx. And I am Jonas of the House Medvyed, Knight of the Lion, Servant of Brevoy, and perhaps a little too impressed with myself. He smiles charmingly during the last statement.
Lots of ninjaing going on, lol.
Gathien Toran |
It's the size modifier to stealth... sneak *right* in there...
Gathien looks up at the newcomers, standing on his chair and offering his small hand as the cavalier introduces them.
"Well met, Lady Carnivyx.....Ser Jonas..."
Noting the young knight's smile at his own joke, Gathien smiles brightly and asks, "I wonder if it would it be imprudent to ask what you did to impress yourself so?"
Alexite Ratarion |
Alex raises from his chair as Jonas and Carnivyx arrive at their table, bowing his head politely. That is all he could make himself do. They should be bowing to him, not the other way around. He has to grin silently at this irony. He knows that most of how he was raised was wrong, but still some things were universally true.
But he had no title here, or anywhere anymore and even if he wouldn't be able to tell anyone. So he had to be polite, even to those of lesser station.
"Greetings milady. Greetings Sir." he sighs as he looks at the table "I fear this table is going to get too small soon"
Rorgrym Khazhugar |
Listens to Kargath explanation and shows a bit of alarm at the evergrowing throng. "So many," he thinks, "It must be bad then."
"Thank you, Kargath, for introducing me. My apologies that I did not do so myself; I find myself greatly lost in thought these days. I confess, I did not expect such a turnout as I have apparently underestimated the degree of dificulty the land is in right now. It's a pleasure to meet you all."
"I fear the poor servants will be quite put out trying to meet our needs tonight; they seemed quite busy already when I arrived."
Looks at the weasel. "I have never heard of a accidental transmutation as this but, then again, the arcane style of magic is not my area of expertise."
Teion & Tor |
"We believe it to be some sort of fey curse, one that has thwarted our attempts break. I've heard rumors of fey to the south and hope to learn more about their powers. "
As Tion stands to greet the 2 newcomers, Tor hastily climbs his arm to again perch on his shoulder.
"Teion and Tor of House Varasme at your service.
Carnivyx |
Very pleased at the transpiring events, Carnivyx smiles invitingly and weakly takes the hand of any who offer while remaining close to Jonas' side throughout the introductions.
Barely resisting the urge to scruff the hair of the particularly fierce looking halfling she also takes quick note of the holy symbol hanging about the neck of imposing man whom had initially caught her attention.
Hmmm... Perhaps this one is more a mercenary than a crusader...
The large toad in her pocket shifted nervously as it must have caught the scent or sight of the greasy creature belonging to the elf during their brief exchange.
"shhh...pet, I do not think the beast is interested in dining on something as unpleasant tasting as you." she mouthed silently to her hidden companion, quietly fastening the pocket closed, just in case.
Alexite Ratarion |
"A fey curse you say?" Alex turns back to Teion, seeming quite interested "I heard and read about fey magic, it is said to be ancient and completely alien to us. I have never encountered a fey creature myself yet, to verify that, but from what I heard, I do believe that it is quite possible they are responsible."
Actually he is not so sure the fey magic would seem that alien to him, but even that is just a theory.
Evan Freehame |
"Right, right, hang on, don't worry, I'm here in time for the feast!" A lean, sandy haired halfling bursts through the ornately carved doors at the end of the hall, and continues talking as if all eyes are on him, and everyone had wanted to know when he would arrive. "Bessy and Hoss are settled in the stable so there'll be no more interruptions from that direction."
He pauses to look round the crowded hall, and his eyes widen a little at the strange crowd. Then he smiles, "Well and well-met everyone! I'm Evan. Evan Freehame. So who might you lot be? Don't be shy."
This is the character that 'Art' posted above. Answers to questions repeated below. I am based in NZ, can post every day, and can't imagine anything better than mixing Pathfinder with Civilization!
Evan is an anti-slavery crusader who wants a strong kingdom in the south that respects freedom and keeps a balance with the natural world. His contribution will be through healing, summoning, and wilderness skills. Mechanically he will progress as full druid, with a focus on versatility and supporting his animal companion.
From a story perspective the early stages will be relatively easy for him - he has no love of brigands or aberrant monsters, and will enjoy the wilderness thoroughly. Conflict with fae or other druids will prove a challenge, and ultimately I'm looking forward to addressing the conflict between respect for nature, and bringing civilisation to the wilderness.
Peregrine Fetch |
"Ah, yes," Ingle replied, looking a bit embarrassed. "No offense intended. Just more of a sherry man myself, you understand." He took another sip from his glass as he continued to survey the room, hiding a grimace behind a quickly donned, if obviously forced, look of approval.
Peregrine felt a small surge of pleasure at having so neatly established the order of things. Almost immediately he realized it was just the sort of thing his uncle would have done, and feeling was soured. He frowned slightly, though his distant look made it obvious it was not meant for the half-elf.
"I do what I must, good man." The half-elf returned his attention to the man. "Seeker of truths. Of mysteries, lost lore and the like," he says with a theatric wave of his hand. "But if you mean what are my qualities - my qualifications - well, just this."
Ingle pulls one of several small flasks from his belt and holds it in steepled fingers before the man. "I am a concoctor. An artisan of the alchemical arts." For a moment the light reflected in the glass vial seems to swallow the half-elf's gaze. "Ingle Farwen at your service," he adds, the rapt look fading as he returns his attention to the man.
Shaking off the nasty thought, Peregrine stood resolute as Ingle wound his way to an actual answer. When he finally got there though, Peregrine's eyes sparked with interest for the first time. "An alchemist? Now that is interesting. I wonder what could tear you away from your beakers and flasks for something such as this. You can call me Peregrine by the way."
Peregrine glanced toward the growing group at one of the tables. "Perhaps we should have a seat."
Does Jonas wear anything that ties him to House Medvyed?
Jaska Galahad |
Questions
1. Why are you interested in working with the Swordlords of Brevoy?
2. What is your motivation to reclaim the Stolen Lands?
3. What will your character contribute to the group?
4. What are your plans for your character mechanically?
5. What are your plans for your character from a story-perspective?
1. Jaska has a long list of enemies, furthermore he's very ambitious. The Swordlords offer is an escape route far into the stolen lands, where he can disappear from those who's ire he has acquired through his banditry and loud mouth. Furthermore, it's a challenge, something for him to sharpen his claws on, metaphorically.
2.He'd be famous, stories would be told about him, young halflings would aspire to be like him, he has a soft spot for things like that. Also, to help shape a kingdom from the ground up where halflings can be
a significant part of the leadership, as he aspires to better his race.
3.Jaska will always do his best to flank melee opponents for sneak attack, and use Bravado strike on stronger opponents in order to try to demoralize them. Befuddling Strike will likely be his first rouge talent at 2nd level, which will be used to make opponents flat footed. He can sneak, knows a multitude of Languages, and with a high charisma and his naturally persuasive ways( and the persuasive feat too), Jaska is a great diplomat and intimidator.
4. Mechanically I dont have much planned out at this point, befuddling strike at 2nd level, getting the Rake's Smile ability at 3rd, and then going into the scout archtype for abilities at 4th and 8th level, he will most likely be a rogue for 20 levels.
5. From a story perspective, in the beginning, Jaska is an opportunistic bandit looking for an easy way to escape his well-deserved enemies. He's persuasive and has a strong personality but has a wicked temper and acts without much thought. He'll eventually want to take care of old debts and enemies. He's a very proud person and once presented with the opportunity to do great things, Jaska will slowly become much more noble. Once the kingdom building starts happening, Jaska will let his ambition overtake him and will do anything to leave his mark, particularly by helping to create a society where halflings are always thought of as equal.
Stats and all that in the profile, should be just about done
Jaska enters the mansion with the invitation in hand. He wasn't even sure how he ended up being summoned by Swordlords, and if he ever thought anything out, he might have even thought it was a trap. But the thought never enters his mind. The mansion is already bustling with all sorts of adventurers and servants. He wears only his rapier at his side, in addition to the daggers he keeps hidden. His dark studded leather armor was clearly well made, and he wore it simply with a light red scarf for all to see. He takes a drink when one is offered and bows low as he approaches the table where it seemed all were gathering."Jaska Galahad at your service my friends. What a varied lot have we gathered in this mansion" Chuckling softly now his sharp blue eyes return upward. The halfling has an air of easy confidence, one might even say arrogance. He takes a seat and runs a small hand through his mane of golden blonde hair, surveying the room." This expedition should prove most interesting, I'm eager to find out who my traveling companions will be.
DM Patcher |
12 applicants so far! Keep it up! WOO!
I will be listing up the applicants now, and ask you to reply to some of my questions. I will do another review like this on Wednesday evening.
Statistically speaking, we have an overload of Humans and...halflings!? 5 humans and 4 halflings. No love for half-orcs or gnomes? If I had lost all my sanity I would have been heinously tempted to running two Kingmaker groups, one Halfling-only. (hurr)
That said, while I am all for racial diversity (it does better your chances, ever so slightly), it doesn't guarantee you a spot - it's just one of many factors that will make this process so ridiculously difficult (and I love it).
I also have one universal question that I wish for you to think about: How could I personalise certain aspects of this campaign for you? Are there any NPCs that could appear from your past? Heirloom items? Ect. Give it some thought.

PrinceofDarkness |
For a leadership role, magister or spy master. The brigands he left, and stole his bow from probably don't like him anymore. Witchslayers are always a good enemy. As for the familiar, he's in denial at the moment. Otherwise he would have returned home for aid in curing his "brother". Tor's mission is to try and mold teion into a powerful witch, one that can serve his patron's goals. Eventually, as time passes and life lessons are elarned, Teion might come to realize that this is not his brother, and accept what happened all those years ago.
Kragath Lightbringer |
Kragath rises and greets everyone who shows an interest in joining their table. When Carnivyx arrives, he bows respectfully and takes her hand in hopes to make ammends to whatever might have upset the young lady previously. As the servant returns frantically with more chairs, he leans over and whispers something to him. The servant then rushes off, and eventually, a part of the crowd parts as four servants return with a large, rectangular table that is brought out of a back room that looks like it really does not belong in this room.
"My friends, I have made arrangements for us to have more comfortable seating arrangements given the multitude of individuals present. Hopefully now we will be able to sit and converse properly."
Kragath stands and steps away as the servants rearrange the furniture, then takes a place similar to that he had held previously, waiting for everyone else to be seated before he takes his own seat.
As far as being faced with a necromancer, well, it would depend on the situation. Obviously if they are a threat in some way Kragath would try to defeat them. But I'm going to assume you mean as in if there were a necromancer in the party. In which case, if Kragath knew their speciality, he would keep a close eye on them, especially using his Detect Evil ability on them to ensure the individual was not evil themself. If they used magic to raise undead creatures to help a greater good, he would demand that the vile things be destroyed the moment the battle was over, and would be livid if the spell was used on recently deceased individuals who stood a chance at some form of resurrection (as rare as resurrection magic is, he still would be furious if the necromancer were to raise a fallen companion as a zombie), and out of combat would continue to try to convince the person that there are other ways to master the magic over life and death without using the dark aspects of it.
Gathien Toran |
Seeing the two newcomers arrive, Gathien welcomes them each in Halfling "Jaska, Even, welcome!", surprised at the slight hesitation as he uses his mother tongue for the first time in over a year. Perhaps the Swordlords do not underestimate us, after all, he thinks to himself, until a darker thought occurs to him... Unless they think us expendable.... He frowns slightly at that thought, but then takes a deep breath and releases it. Still, seeing my fellows is somehow strangely reassuring.. In fact, I don't think I've seen so many halflings in a single room since I left home.
Gathien nods to Kragath, "Your foresight in matters of seating is impressive, Ser Lightbringer." and pulls his chair away to allow the servants to do their work, happy for the break in the conversation about arcane curses, allowing him to regain his composure before he accidentally insulted one of the arcanists.
"If I am not being too forward, Ser Lightbringer, how did you come to be here? I would learn of those who, should Desna smile on us, may soon be my companions.... and sharing tales may fill the time before we can fill our bellies."
In terms of hooks:
- Obviously, Gathien's father will play a part in the campaign -- even if the party never encounters him, Gathien is carrying his criticism with him.
- Gathien's mother was a bard who escaped slavery, and so she filled his head with legends of heroes and legendary weapons -- which, as someone who wants to he a hero, would be highly motivating. So much so that he might pay to have a legendary blade rebalanced and rehilted to fit into his small hands.
- Gathien has a distaste for Arcane magic as a result of his upbringing, obviously. This will especially be true if he sees people using it to dominate those weaker than they are --- because, to him, that was more or less his entire childhood. [Hence the Superstitious trait, though in his case, it's more a mix of superstitious and failed apprentice, but still..]
- Because of the immense respect his parents held (as having liberated a bunch of them), most of the folk from Gathien's village are likely to have a poor reaction to him, thinking him headstrong.
- Gathien's friend Staran is the first person who didn't take him for granted -- while I glossed over that bit in his history, I had intended that Gathien spent a few months with his friend (and got a bit of training, finally) before heading out to heed the call of the Swordlords. Staran, therefore, is important both as a friend and as a symbol of what Gathien can be when he sets his mind to it -- as such, issues affecting him would be most... salient.
Jonas Medvyed |
Jonas waits for the servants to rearrange the seating arrangements and then see's to Carni's comfort. Once that is established, he takes a seat himself. Then he asks Carnivyx, So Carni, what brings you to this all too masculine gathering?
J. Cayne |
I think the tone of this AP tends to encourage human characters, even more so than some of others. Can't explain all the halflings though.
Anyway, regarding Peregrine. I suppose that you could say that Igorius is somewhat of a foil to Peregrine, though to be honest I think what is interesting is not so much the ways they differ, but rather the ways in which they are similar. Even though he detest his uncle, Peregrine has become quite a bit like him, he as a tendency to treat people the way he was treated to an extent. It is clear though that Igorius is definitely the far crueler man, though whether this is the result of his nature, or simply the passing of time is not clear. Of course, I don't think that Igorius hates his nephew, he views his own cruelties as practicalities. In fact, I think it is likely he sees himself as grooming Peregrine for what is to come. Igorius has no children, and with Peregrine's father missing, that makes Peregrine next in line after Igorius. I think Igorius once had a wife whom he loved very deeply, but who died very soon after their marriage, after that he simple devoted himself to furthering the House, it is all he lives for and deeply colours his world view.
Regarding lawfulness and House Fetch. The Fetches tend to favor discipline, keeping their word (which often leaves them hesitant to give it in the first place), tradition, and being backed by the strength of law. However there is a tendency to see things as being very open to interpretation and if push comes to shove, skirting the law isn't out of the question. Placing bribes to secure a charter is a good example of how House Fetch operates. Now that might be considered more neutral, but I see the law as an important starting point in the Fetches decision making process. For instance it would be highly unlikely for them to bribe a jailor to let someone escape, they would, for example, be much more likely to bribe a magistrate to declare a pardon. The reason I mention all this is because this is what I have in mind when I say lawful neutral as Peregrine's alignment.
Kragath Lightbringer |
"If I am not being too forward, Ser Lightbringer, how did you come to be here? I would learn of those who, should Desna smile on us, may soon be my companions.... and sharing tales may fill the time before we can fill our bellies."
"I have come at the will of Abadar. It would seem he has a vision for me, and I had hoped to speak with someone amongst the Swordlords for clarity in this matter. However, I was surely as surprised as many others here when I actually met the messenger bearing my invitation to this gathering on my way home to Restov."
Kragath again scans the room looking for any sign of the Swordlords making an appearance, then turns his attentions back to the table. "And as for your self, Master Halfling, beyond the invitation, what brings you to the Hall of the Swordlords?"
Ingle Farwen |
"An alchemist? Now that is interesting. I wonder what could tear you away from your beakers and flasks for something such as this. You can call me Peregrine by the way."
Pleased at Peregrine's interest, Ingle gave the man a wink and a grin. "Interesting indeed, master Peregrine. Fascinating, even. If I do say so myself." With a blurred fluttering of his long fingers, the alchemist twirled the vial about his hand and returned it hastily to it's place on his belt. "Contained in small bottles such as these are the all the powers of the mage. Even that of those cloistered clergy - with nary a god in site, I might add."
Ingle paused, sipping at his wine and watching Peregrine closely over the rim - perhaps to see if the man was buying any of this.
"Perhaps we should have a seat."
"Ah, of course, of course. Splendid idea." Perhaps because he simply couldn't help himself, Ingle added, "Superlative...." and smiled his awkward smile once more.
Ingle moves to stand near the growing group, nearly spilling the remainder of his wine as he maneuvers his lanky form through the crowd. "Gentlemen," he says, nodding to the group in general. "Ladies," he adds, with a slight bow. "Ingle Farwin at your service. And my dear friend Peregrine as well, I have no doubt. Would you have room for two more? My feet are simply killing me, and I must unhand this atrocious wine before temptation drives me to take another taste."
Kragath Lightbringer |

"By all means, join us gentlemen. I am Kragath Lightbringer, servant of The Gold-Fisted." Kragath will pause to allow the others at the table to introduce themselves.
Alexite Ratarion |
"More halflings... great." Again he couldn't shake the believes and thoughts with which he was raised, that halflings were just lower creatures and born slaves. And again he knew that that was probably wrong.
Instead he nodded at them as well "Greetings, Evan, Jaska. Welcome to our table. And you as well, Master Ingle, Master Peregrine. This is turning out to be quite the illustrous gathering." he adds with another slight bow of his head to the second group of newcomers.
He then sits down again, taking another sip from the wine. "Not a bad one" he thinks.
Noble-born: That seems like the obvious choice and at the same time not at all, since its completely linked to Brevory families, so we'd definitely would have to talk about it. I would say "Medvyed but instead of feys use devils" But not sure if devils will even play any role in the AP, so that might just be wasted then.
Bastard: Again not a 100% fit, since he's not linked to Brevory families, but he pretty much severed the ties to his family, so that might work. Brevory nobility might frown down on that, even if they don't really like Chelaxians.
Pioneer: Thats probably the worst fit, but you could say that's what he is now. Searching for ancient ruins in unexplored lands etc for old magic?
Alternatively, I could add some tie to a Brevory noble house into his background (like his mother is from there, political marriage with his fathers house), if that would allow some of the traits then.
Leadership Role: Ruler is something he's been trained for since he was little, but Councilor or Magister would also fit I think.
Past catching up: Yes, that be fun ;) Obviously it depends who they send and how much he learned till then, if he'd run or fight, or come up with a more creative solution. But yes, I'm well aware that that might be trouble for him in the future.
Gathien Toran |
"Indeed? Well, my own tale has nothing so noble or divinely inspired as your own -- in fact, it is rather mundane in comparison. Beyond the invitation itself, Ser Lightbringer, this meeting was recommended to me by someone I trust a great deal." Gathien pauses there a moment, debating whether or not to say any more, and then happily nodding toward Ingle and Peregrine as they approach, thankful for the distraction.
"Certainly, there is always room for more, so long as you bring conversation with you. We were just discussing these invitations and how we came to be here."
Ingle Farwen |
First of all, I don't see it as a choice that Ingle makes (at least, not at first). I see it more as him being chosen. Whether this is because he is destined for something inline with the gods plans, or simply a god messing with him for his audacity (Ingle believes the gods are simply not required) is uncertain.
I also had the idea that it would arise in a situation where he was left to wonder if it were even the gods or not. Being largely self-taught, and his ambition combined with his tendency to just not consider the consequences leads him to try things that a saner alchemist might not. If one of these "experiments" were to go wrong... Was it the consequences of the experiment that he is now lame and seems to have gained unusual power? Or is it some god or another? (I haven't decided which god, and would even feel fine if you wanted to choose one for him based on the campaign circumstances.)
I realize this whole idea is still a bit nebulous, but there should be time to work out more of the details as we move along. Or, as is often fun, to let the details work themselves out.
Why take a dip in Oracle if not for mechanical advantage? Well, I'm not saying that it wouldn't have advantages, only that that isn't really my motivation. In fact, the thing I like the most about the idea is the curse part. I'm liking the Lame curse with the Flame mystery (seems pretty thematic for an alchemist). Although, some of the other players may wind up wishing there was a mute curse... ;P
Anyway, that's my half-baked idea. Again, I'm completely open to suggestions on this.
Leadership role... Grand Diplomat would suit him, and that would be my preference. He loves to hear himself talk. Otherwise, Magister might be good as well, provided that isn't restricted to the more mage-like characters.
As to your general question, hmmm... Aside from the bullies of his youth (which Ingle still thinks of as his friends - he has a knack for twisting things, I guess) and the mage who attempted and failed to train him, it's hard to say. His father is also still alive, but a man of little consequence. His mother? She's an elf and she had little to do with him after his birth. I'll have to give some thought to who she may have been. A lot of possibilities there, I think.
Edit: Included answer to your general question. Sort of....
DM Patcher |
In regards of the Bastard trait: your parent with noble heritage could have been exiled before you were born. Despite being cast away and stripped of titles, you'd still have "noble blood" as it were.
Another alternative is that your one of your parents or one of their parents were bastards directly descendent from one of the noble families or the royal family. The goal of the Bastard trait is to give you some form of claim to nobility. If that means a little deluted blood, then that's fine.
As for Noble-born, Medvyed specifically, the entirety of Kingmaker deals with fey as its "token enemy" (to my knowledge, apart from the wilderness and bandits). So while it isn't impossible to switch fey to devil, it wouldn't serve much of a purpose.
You may have to add an element to your backstory as it is right now - I don't demand it, but the traits would seem a little more "tacked on" rather than a part of your character otherwise. But I strive to be flexible, and will try to be lenient if it serves a purpose or is well thought through.
Ingle Farwen |
"This is turning out to be quite the illustrous gathering."
"Ah, you've heard of me then! How splendid!" Ingle beams as he lowers himself into his chair, fussing with his cloak as he does so. Setting his glass as far from him as his lengthy arms will allow, he brushes his hands and leans back.
Turning to Gathien he says, "The invitations. Of course." The half-elf falls silent for a moment, fidgeting in his seat as if he didn't know what to do with himself; first crossing, then uncrossing his legs, resting his hands in his lap, then propping them on the chairs arm. Finally, appearing to give up, he merely let his form slump into the chair. "Exploring the Greenbelt. Too many here for a task such as that." He casts a quick glance around at the still growing throng of would-be adventurers. "Can't turn a mob loose and expect any discipline. Some will return home disappointed today, I think."
Kragath Lightbringer |
Kragath rises during a brief lull in the conversation, "Gentlemen," he turns to Carnivyx, "and Lady. Given the rapid but welcome filling of this table, I feel it is only proper that we should all be aware of who each other is and their chosen path in life, as our very lives may depend upon it in the near future."
Kragath pauses a brief moment, makes sure that everyone is listening, then continues, "As for myself, some of you may already know that I am Kragath Lightbringer, son of Krovax. I am vassal of Abadar The Gold-Fisted. It is an honor to meet you all, even under the pressed circumstances." Kragath bows to those who have gathered round the table, and then sits, allowing everyone else a chance at a formal introduction to the new additions to the table.
While individuals introduce themselves, Kragath silently appraises each of them carefully, trying to get a feel for the quality and measure of character of those in his company.
Gathien Toran |
Gathien stands upon his chair once more, stretching up to the extent of his height, "I am Gathien Toran, here without connection to family or deity. I am a raging warrior, originally trained as a warslinger, and I am indeed, pleased to meet you."
With that, he bows to the table, then smiles, and drops back into a seated position, nodding at Kragath.
Peregrine Fetch |
Pleased at Peregrine's interest, Ingle gave the man a wink and a grin. "Interesting indeed, master Peregrine. Fascinating, even. If I do say so myself." With a blurred fluttering of his long fingers, the alchemist twirled the vial about his hand and returned it hastily to it's place on his belt. "Contained in small bottles such as these are the all the powers of the mage. Even that of those cloistered clergy - with nary a god in site, I might add."Ingle paused, sipping at his wine and watching Peregrine closely over the rim - perhaps to see if the man was buying any of this.
Peregrine's eyebrow quirked up again, slightly. "All of them? Remarkable." His voice had settled back into its flat, dry tone.
"Ah, of course, of course. Splendid idea." Perhaps because he simply couldn't help himself, Ingle added, "Superlative...." and smiled his awkward smile once more.Ingle moves to stand near the growing group, nearly spilling the remainder of his wine as he maneuvers his lanky form through the crowd.
Following the talkative half-elf, Peregrine nodded slightly at his introduction. "Dear friend of only five minutes, I'm afraid."
Alexite Ratarion |
"Ah, you've heard of me then! How splendid!" Ingle beams as he lowers himself into his chair, fussing with his cloak as he does so. Setting his glass as far from him as his lengthy arms will allow, he brushes his hands and leans back.
"No, I'm afraid I haven't heard of you" he replies to the half-elf "What is it you are so famous for? I am new to these lands, so I don't know the local celebrities."
After Kragath introduces himself, he adds his own introduction "One might say I am a student of the arcane arts, I guess, even though I follow a different path to knowledge than most my collegues. You may call me Alex for now."
Peregrine Fetch |
Kragath rises during a brief lull in the conversation, "Gentlemen," he turns to Carnivyx, "and Lady. Given the rapid but welcome filling of this table, I feel it is only proper that we should all be aware of who each other is and their chosen path in life, as our very lives may depend upon it in the near future."
Peregrine stood with a nod of acknowledgement toward Kragath. "Indeed, more proper introductions are certainly in order," he said, looking around the table. "I am Peregrine Fetch, of House Fetch." Peregrine punctuated the statement with bow.
"I am a student of a great many things, though I suppose the one that would interest you all most, given the circumstances, is that I have studied the arcane arts for some time. I have a particular interest in divination...though I am afraid I am unable to tell you who will be selected tonight." Peregrine smiled slightly at the last statement, "I do hope you will not hold that against me."
Nodding again to those collected around the table, Peregrine sat down. He watched the others with interest as he waited for them make their selves more properly known.
Ingle Farwen |
"Dear friend of only five minutes, I'm afraid."
"It seems a lifetime, does it not?" Ingle quipped, obliviously.
"Indeed, Longshanks. Perhaps even yourself."
The half-elf blinked several times in quick succession, appearing as if the idea of being sent home had never crossed his mind. "Patently absurd," he mumbles to himself after a moment, attempting to dismiss the thought.
"What am I famous for?" he says in surprise, turning toward Alex. "Well... as it so happens... that is to say... Perhaps 'famous' is too strong a word, though I am well known in parts north. Small parts, though they be." For a moment the alchemist wishes he hadn't been so hasty in putting his wine glass out of reach. "But famous I will be, rest assured. You have gotten in on the ground floor, as they say. I am a concoctor of potions, elixirs, remedies and restoratives. Amazing applications to bring you vigor and viv. Well, to bring myself vigor and viv. I haven't quite worked out how to get them to work on others just yet. But that is neither here nor there; the secret is just around the corner, no doubt. You could, in fact, say that I also follow a different path as well. I would simply love to sit down and discuss your approach. Most interested. Most interested. Enticed even."
Turning to Peregrine, he added, "And yours as well, dear friend."
Jaska Galahad |
DM
The idea of enemies comes primarily from the Brigand feat. Jaska etched out a living for a while as a bandit in the river kingdoms, where he was known for his bravado, and recklessness, stealing from common folk and bandits alike. I'm operating off the assumption that the mw studded leather armor he wears is stolen, so perhaps there is a halfling bandit out there trying to catch up with him. In any event, I like the idea of him having some of the bandits know of him, and probably of his reputation. If you want some friendly npc connections, perhaps Jaska has a mentor or family member living somewhere in the stolen lands. The large amount of halflings is odd, but i do have quite a feel for this guy. haha
"Ah Jaska, I don't think we've met?" Evan grabs Jaska's hand and shakes it enthusiastically. "Good to see a fellow halfling among all these bigjobs here! The feast hasn't quite started yet so your timing is perfect. Oh, and I'm Evan."
"Merry meet Evan my brother." Jaska offers with a smile as he moves to take his seat at the rearranged table.
in Halfling "Jaska, Even, welcome!"
"Greetings Friend, That is a remarkable tattoo. " Jaska replies in his native tongue to the halfling.
"Greetings, Evan, Jaska. Welcome to our table. And you as well, Master Ingle, Master Peregrine. This is turning out to be quite the illustrous gathering." he adds with another slight bow of his head to the second group of newcomers.
"Indeed tall fellow, it must be quite illustrious for my people to be represented so well." He smirks slyly, nodding at the other halflings in the room.
"Wise Words, Vassal of Abadar." Jaska begins smiling. He stood up in the chair to his full height of 3'1 and cleared his throat."I am Jaska Galahad." He explains, as he steps onto the table itself for a higher vantage point." I, like my halfling brother Gathien, have no particular ties to deity or family house. Leaning down to pick up his cup he drinks as if he's parched." However, I've lived in the River Kingdoms, I know the people and how to deal with them, And my rapier swiftly deals with those my tongue cannot." He concludes confidently." It's a pleasure to meet all of you, certainly." With that he steps off the table and into his seat.
Carnivyx |
Surprised by the sudden gathering of more halflings than she had seen in one place since a child, Carnivyx takes a hasty check of her coinpurse and other immediately vulnerable belongings before accepting offers of a seat.
taking sure to make certain that seat is close to Jonas and quietly mouthing to him "Thank you again."
"Gentlemen, my name is Carnivyx, of no house or family of any great importance. You may call me Carni." she pauses for a moment to whisper a swift, soft incantation which causes an eerie blue-green light to flicker briefly around a carved bone ring on her slender finger. "I am an apprentice to Morhan Duskbringer of Lodovka. Recently released of his service to, as he put it, 'Find my place in the world.'"
Rorgrym Khazhugar |
As for the more sinister aspects attributed to Hanspur, Rorgrym doesn't really care. He's never done those things nor seen anyone who has. Hanspur is the god of water and river travel and it's that aspect that Rorgrym feels a connection to. If other priests engage in such bizarre activities then that's between them and Hanspur. If someone wants to give Rorgrym grief about it, so be it but it isn't something he's concerned about. Over 63 years he's probably already had to face social stigma already and that's okay. No one, not even a cleric, can truly understand how the mind of a deity works; thinking that you can is arrogance in Rorgrym's opinion.
As for leadership role, Councilor or High Priest would be best suited to his talents. Being a High Priest would be somewhat startling to him as it isn't an ambition of his but he wouldn't shy away from it. Really though, the same could be said of any leadership role. Rorgrym has never sought leadership and so has never really thought about it but it isn't something that would bother him. He could even do passing well as a Warden or General though he would likely feel less confident of himself in such roles.
Rorgrym stands. "Greetings all, for those who were not present for the former introductions, my name is Rorgrym Khazhugar, Cleric of Hanspur. I was born...I have lived in the Rostland area for all of my life that I can remember; I have known no other home." Nods to Carnivyx. "I too, seek to find my place in this world though this desire comes from my own recent restlessness of both mind and body."
He sits back down and looks at the wine but shakes his head, "No, I just don't trust these local winemakers. They let the water sit for far too long."
Fraust |
Wow, lots of activity. I'll get back on when I don't have such a time limit to catch up on the roleplay...
NOTES AND QUESTIONS:
Those are some extreme stats. From what I can tell, it's 15-point buy - you may want to fix that (though I am certain you were planning to anyway). What leadership role are you likely to take?
Should be 20 point buy. Though I noticed I forgot to add in racial mods.

As for leadership role I don't have the Player's Guide handy right this second, but I would say adviser of some sort, or diplomat. When I get back on to Roleplay I'll look at the guide again and get an exact answer.
As for personalized plot ideas. A big one I can think of is possible responses by Kisandra's parents if they ever found out their former servant's subconscious has brought back fragment of their dead daughter to continue adventuring with. I'll try and come up with more when I get back.
