It's apparently not affecting all parts of the industry... Paizo just hired a new developer.

I think youse misunderestimate Don Badger's resources and... "determination." Also, you missed the emphasis on "hostile." {squints menacingly, cracks knuckles} j/k :)

A lot of the posts in this thread seem pretty harsh towards Bill Slavicsek. Maybe it's just me but the man has had an influence on a lot of game products over the years that I've really enjoyed and I only wish him the best in his future endeavors, whether he left WotC on his own or was fired/laid off/rolled off/etc.
As for all of the 5E speculation, I find that extremely unlikely in this climate. With the Essentials "evergreen" products out there now, my guess is they are going to continue to focus on improving the DDI, in particular getting the VTT as good as they can, so they can continue to earn money via subscriptions. They'll still have a handful of other D&D products on the shelf for the next few years but I think they'll focus on getting people involved in the game and then directing them to take advantage of the online offerings.
Note too, that while I have no idea of what the production costs and sales numbers are like, WotC has definitely been on a board game kick lately with Castle Ravenloft, Wrath of Ashardalon, Conquest of Nerath and the upcoming Drizzt and Dungeon sort of board games due out later this year. I'm sure they've been dedicating the time of their designers and developers to those efforts in lieu of some of the roleplaying materials for now.

I'd personally like to see a relaunch of DDM, but in small doses, like say one 50-60 miniature set a year. In addition to the random set, I'd like to see 2-3 Icons type minis or fixed sets for the larger creatures. I kind of doubt it unfortunately in the near term given the low cost token alternative being used in the Monster Vaults (which I like, just as an addition to, not replacement for, the minis).

That's kind of what I'm thinking too. 4e isn't that old at all, it's barely 3 years old. They just brought Essentials out not too long ago, so that right there was the "directional change", I don't see them doing that again so soon.
I'm all about a 5e coming, but I'm not deluded enough to think it'd be anytime soon.
Essentials? Just like the Rules Compendium before the announcement of 4e?

Shortly afterword actually, 4E was announced at Gencon in August of 2007 while the 3.5 Rules Compendium was released on October 16th of 2007.
When WotC released the Rules Compendium they played it up as being the definitive final product for 3.5.

You shouldn't have said that. Now we will have to kill you. Slowly. Painfully. Over a number of years.

Oh, I have it on good authority that they'll not only announce, but also start selling 5e on this year' GenCon. It's going with the trading card model.

My reliable source says that they are skipping 5th edition altogether and jumping right into the 6th edition. It will be radically different in that the rules will be so complex no book will accurately portray them. Instead, you buy a computer unit and it walks you through the character creation process. When you make a sub-optimal choice, even for role playing purposes, the unit shuts down and you are no longer allowed to play.
Oh, and there will be holo minis, and combat will be decided by nerf weapons.
