Male Dwarf Cleric of Angradd / 2

Oren shakes his head slightly at Cahal's words but smiles to show he isn't angered. "I can't speak of all Gods, of course, but with Sarenrae it's not a matter of her owning her people. Those of us who have chosen to follow her give ourselves freely to her. In return we can enjoy the surety of her blessings. Light, truth and redemption for those who have lost their way in the darkness."

Oren's smile fades as he turns his thoughts to the other part of the man's question. "As to slavery...well we are a part of a society that accepts such things as natural. I would prefer to think that such an unpleasant notion will change given time. Service, as that given to one's God, should be given freely, not taken. It is a comfort to me that those who enter into this effort as slaves will leave with their freedom."

Later, at Sultan's Claw

Upon seeing the fires engulfing the unusual wagon, Oren does not hesitate to rush forward, ignoring the heat of the flames as he raises his hands, his holy symbol clutched between them.

"Sarenrae, in thy name I ask for water!"

Cast Create Water over the wagon. Oren will repeat this as often as he can in the ensuing rounds.

Male Goblin Alchemist 1

As soon as the fire engulfs the wagon, Ripnok stares in awe for a few moments, the longing for the flames that his race adores momentarily overwhelms his senses. He shakes himself free of his daze and starts throwing buckets of water at the fire. Not doing much but he does not have any skill with horses. He has incredibly good aim with the water but cannot throw too much as he is not very strong. While doing this he looks around to see if there is anyone still inside.

DM eyes only, players don't look here:
Strength Checks: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 1 = 71d20 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 61d20 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 31d20 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 1 = 21

DC = 24
DC = 15
DC = 20

Unfortunately as Ripnok gets closer to dump one of the loads of water on the wagon he recognizes a familiar smell from his childhood, the smell of burning human flesh. There was a person inside the wagon and with what you can see through the flames and smoke he can't be alive anymore.

The woman and the man from before and four soldiers dressed in the distinctive red chitin-plate armor of the Pactmaster Guard run back and forth between the burning wagon and an uncovered wagon about 20 feet away which contains a large barrel holding enough drinking water to serve the entire campsite for a week. At present, it will take the six NPCs 10 rounds to quench the fire using the pail-by-pail method. But with the help of Oren and Ripnok it is reduced down to 5 rounds(30 seconds). Thank you Mr. Oren for doing his best impression of a fire hose that he can...lol.

So the fire seems to be under control so the rest of you can either help calm the animals, help move the endangered(for another 5 rounds) wagon, or start healing the firemen(people with out magical healing will be able to attempt heal checks). To perform the other actions please see the spoilers below and make the associated checks.

Pull Wagon Out of the Way:
There are four mercenaries each attempting to move the wagon. Make me a strength check please.

Heal Wounded Firefighters:
A red-headed halfling cleric kneels next to two severely burned mercenaries who tried to enter the burning wagon. Father Zastoran is tending to a badly wounded mercenary called Trevvis, but he is unable to focus on his second patient, a female sworder named Kallien, who lies near death from terrible burns and smoke inhalation. Make me a Heal Check to try to stop her suffering.

Deal with Frightened Animals:
A modest collection of pigs, goats, and sheep accompanies the group camping here. The flaming wagon has unsettled these creatures, which somehow escaped from their pen in the confusion surrounding the fire’s outbreak. The middleaged human camel driver and his wife do their best to wrangle the panicking animals, but their efforts are quickly being overrun by the chaos of the situation. Five animals must be calmed in order to keep them out of danger and out of the way. Make me a Handle animal(or wild empathy...if we have a druid...) check.

Male Goblin Rogue 1

Isz looked at the situation, and for a moment spreading the flames crossed his mind...but no, he needed the others to survive. Catching the animals, that was more his speed.

He looked around and spotted a goat that had gotten into a spilled bag of grain and was happily feasting on its ill gotten goods. Isz figured he could probably sneak up and snag the creature and drag it back to its pen.
Isz doesn't have handle animal and it's trained only, so I'm shooting for a stealth to get close followed by a grapple.

Like a shadow, Isz pours himself along the nearby structures, not so much walking as pouring himself towards the unwitting ungulate
Stealth:1d20 + 14 ⇒ (2) + 14 = 16

Perception check:1d20 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12

The creature doesn't sense Isz sneak up on it, go ahead and roll your CMB check(grapple). Your CMB is equal to your base attack bonus plus your strength bonus.

Male -Unkown- Sorcerer level 1

A Medium size hooded figure races over to the Wagon and attempts to aid the mercenaries in pulling it away.

DM's eyes only:
Kesh used enlarge person and now has a strength of 16

Strength check:1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Freakin weakling. Oh well thats the way the Dice roll

Male Human Fighter 1

Caius would leap into action almost superhumanly fast. Kicking off from the sand he'd grab a bucket (or bowl) and fill it with sand and throwing it on the fire. Instead of using water, he figured he could smother the fire the way Haleena always did if something got set ablaze in the kitchen. Caius would be careful not to get too close to the flames, but continue spreading sand/water on the fire as best he could. If someone got hurt by the flames, he'd pull them to safety. Whatever was required of him, he'd do.

*must have missed the previous post*

Instead of sand, he will attempt to help with the wagon.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4

Cahal rushes on cue and goes to the wagons to help pull them out of harm's way.

Strength: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (12) + 4 = 16

Male Goblin Rogue 1

With a lifetime of experience tackling other creatures from behind, Isz stops a measured distance from the goat and lunges, both hands going for the horns...

1d20 - 2 ⇒ (17) - 2 = 15

Is was able to capture one of the goats, grabbing it by the horns. I'll assume that you are putting it back in the pen. It will be a struggle but you will get it there. Just waiting for Maroosa to post and then I can move on with the story.

Sorry for the delay, had to deal with a flea infestation.

Marossa stops short for a few moments as the sight of the camp sight on fire sends fear up her spine. As her eyes wander over the camp she notices the red-headed man in robes kneeling over a body with another one close by. Quickly rushing over to the short mans side, she slides into the dirt to kneel over the other body and spreads her hands with fingers splayed out over the woman's chest. Her mouth hums out a short melody as energy flows from her fingers into the woman.

Cure Light Wounds: 1d8 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

The woman that Morossa is kneeling over takes a breath and her eyes flutter open. She mumbles a little as her life comes back to her and then looks up at the young girl. Tha...Thank you for saving me she says very weakly. The red haired halfling walks over and smiles at Marossa. Quiet now Kallien, you might be out of the woods, but you still need to recover your strength. His eyes then shift to the young human Thank you so very much. If there is anything I can do for you don't hesitate to ask. What of the fire? Is it under control yet?" he pauses for a second, his affect turning sad "And what of Eloais...did he survive?"

With the help of Oren and Ripnok the fire is quickly put out. After the fire is out the woman you saw earlier rushing out of the tent and shouting orders approaches the you two. She is joined by the large man that approached you before. She starts speaking My name is Almah, leader of this here band of traveling merchents mostly but there are others here for other reasons. Thank you for your help but if you'll excuse me I have to figure out who's responsible for this fire. I have a feeling that this was no accident. She eyes Ripnok for a moment and then shakes her head and walks back to her tent. The man then speaks Names Garavel he states mater of factly and then extends his hand to Oren and narrows his eyes at Ripnok. ...you must be the people I sent for...though I don't remember ordering a goblin... he says as he looks over Ripnok. Though I guess he did just help put out the fire so he's good in my book, just don't go eating any of us or the animals and we'll be good. GARAVEL GET IN HERE Almah bellows from inside her tent and the man jumps a little and then bows to the others Excuse me I'm needed elsewhere I'M COMING DON'T GET YOUR BUN IN A TWIST he shouts back as he turns and walks into the large tent. Moments later loud arguing can be heard from inside.

The other members in the camp help Isz corral the rest of the animals though they seem put off by him and a few can be seen whispering and pointing. After all the animals have been put back in their pens a man approaches him. You there...you wouldn't be looking for a free meal here would you he says brandishing a large pointed stick at Isz. Go on get out of here, there is no free food to be had he says sternly, swinging the stick at Isz but missing wildly, trying to scare him more than hurt him.

With the help of four of the guards Kesh, Caius, and Cahal manage to move the wagon out of harms way before the flames and now cinders get to it. Once the wagon is moved the mercenaries disperse to start dealing with the after affects of the fire.

Okay for successfully helping the camp everyone gets 57 xp. You have a couple of options here. You can investigate the burnt wagon as it is still standing, though its pretty well singed and has a foul smell coming from it(like burnt flesh), you can interact with any of the NPC's or you could assist in figuring out what caused the fire.

Male Dwarf Cleric of Angradd / 2

Oren inclines his head to both the woman, Almah, and the man, Garavel.

"Good morning to you both, I am Oren Tor, follower of Sarenrae, may her glory light the world for all eternity."

He nods as Almah rushes off. "It seems you've hired two goblins, Garavel," he says. "They are most...interesting...companions."

As the man rushes off, Oren exchanges glances with Ripnok. "There seems to be a great deal going on."

Though Oren has little hope for anyone surviving the fire in the wagon, he feels that he must be certain. Careful not to cause injury to himself, he moves toward the wagon, searching for whoever was victim of it. Along the way he also keeps his eyes open for anything to suggest what caused the fire.

Perception: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11

You move to examine the remains of the wagon and the first thing you notice is the horrid stench of burnt flesh. Your examination of the ruined wagon reveals sooty ashes, a few broken bottles or potions vials, a cracked crystal ball, and several pools of melted wax that you assume used to be candles. The charred skeletal form of a human reamins near the center of the wagon. You can't tell if he struggled or not during his last moments of life but you are pretty sure there is nothing you can do for him at this point.

Male Goblin Alchemist 1

I cannot promise I won't eat any animals. After all that is where meat comes from. Perhaps there is a way to synthesize animal matter by combining...Ripnok starts rambling and talking to himself about the possibilities of creating artificial meat. He wants to inspect the carriage to see if he can determine how the fire was started.

Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

Make me a perception check Ripnok and get higher than Oren did...lol.

Male Goblin Alchemist 1

Well that didn't work lol

Cahal walks up to the man who took a swing at Isz and nods deeply: "Hello, my name is Cahal ud'Din, may you always water on your path. Please do not misinterpret my colleague's attempt at saving your livestock. The desert is full of illusions and mirage. A man should be wise and able to see beyond, lest he dies very quickly..."

He then walks back to the burned wagon and takes a look at the tracks closest.

Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8

Wow no one can roll perception today...oh well

The man looks at Cahal. I don't know about where you're from but around these parts, goblins don't help people, they eat 'em and I suggest you keep that in mind if you're traveling with him he coughs up a little phlem and then spits it next to Cahal And I'd be careful if you are traveling with him he adds before turning and tending to the animals some more.

Cahal you notice the same things that Oren did but as hard as you try you can't find any foot prints or tracks. The wind that kicked up during the fire must have blown them away.

Male -Unkown- Sorcerer level 1

Kesh slowly makes his way up to the burning cart. He is attempting to sneak into it trying to go unnoticed.
Stealth Rolls: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (4) + 11 = 15

Once in the wagon he looks around.

Perception:1d20 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9

Sigh...I swear the who lot of you are the most unperceptive people...

Kesh you get a little closer look and as you get enter the wagon you notice that the floor is still warm under your feet, though not dangerously so. Spread around the cart are a whole bunch of harrow cards though most are burnt beyond recognition. You also get a good look at the body but again can't seem to notice anything else about him other than what Oren has noticed previously. When you exit your robe is covered in soot and ash and is in a desperate need of cleaning.

Just as a side note I forgot to mention. There are about 20 people in the camp outside of the party and aside from Almah and Garavel they know nothing about you guys, and even those two didn't know the exact make up of the party, they requested classes and names, but didn't bother to look at races. You just rode up in the middle of the night with 2 goblins and a kobald in your group. The fact that you've helped them with the fire and the other odd chores means Kesh, Ripnok, and Isz won't be killed on sight but don't be expecting a warm reception for them. And Kesh, Ripnok, and Isz need I remind you that most of the people in this camp have spent the start of their careers killing many of your friends and family, keep that in mind when you want to follow your baser instincts.

Male -Unkown- Sorcerer level 1

Kesh's robe is usually dirty but he will make an attempt to dust off.
Once Kesh crawls out of the wagon he attempts to stay out of sight. He quickly dusts off his robe and disappears. He is watching and listening to what precedes.

Male Goblin Rogue 1

Isz doesn't even flinch at the swinging stick, and smiles approvingly at Cahal's words.

"I cannot speak for Goblins where he comes from, but where I come from desert folk are too tawny and dry to bother with. Besides, if I wanted your goat, I would have snapped its neck and snagged it from the dead pile later rather than listen to your racist prattling, which I notice you didn't start until after I was done helping you. You're welcome, by the way. I can't begin to tell you how many of my kin died so your adventurers could snag a little gold or experience and leave the bodies to rot. Go write a book."

Without waiting for a response he than marched of to find Ripnok so he could talk junk about the humanoids in Goblin.

Marossa looks up at the man as she finishes her small bit of magic, the arcane energy suffusing her features for a bit so she doesn't appear quite as haggard as she feels from lack of pesh. Her eyes turn back to the woman as she bows her head and whispers, "My pleasure Miss," before turning back to the halfling.

"I.. I am.. am glad I could he-help Sir, I believe the fire is under control... Who is Eloais Sir? I ho-hope he wasn't inside that fire."

Male Dwarf Cleric of Angradd / 2

Oren kneels beside the burned form of the man, breathing through his mouth to keep from smelling the reek of the burnt flesh. Placing his hands above the body (not quite touching) he looks to the east where the sun will soon be rising and says,

"Lady, let this man's suffering be eased and his soul lifted to its proper destination. If there is anything more that we should learn in the manner of his death or the tasks that lay unfulfilled before him, guide my eyes that I might see."

Bowing his head he closes his eyes a moment, clearing his mind and then he turns to examine the remains of the wagon around him.

One more perception check, now that he is no longer distracted by his concern for the perished: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 2 = 12
Drat. Well, worth a shot.

Male Goblin Alchemist 1

When Isz comes over and tells Ripnok what happened he is incensed. What complete foolishness! Why if it hadn't been for you that mans livelihood would have run off into the desert and then where would he be. I swear the gall of some people! Have we not made it abundantly clear that we are not typical goblin slaves? He says this getting a bit more agitated as he goes on ranting in the goblin tongue.

Not sure what to do next, or even to take initiative, Cahal looks to Oren: "Found anything? These trails are all blown by the winds... What was in that wagon?"

He takes a look at the strewn cards. Perception: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (19) + 5 = 24
Ah!

Male Dwarf Cleric of Angradd / 2

Oren shakes his head. "Unfortunately, the damage seems to be quite complete. For whatever reason, this wagon must have burned remarkably fast. How it might have happened, however, I haven't a clue. Perhaps we should seek out Almah and Garavel and learn what we can from them."

Bingo there we go Oren figured it out...lol

Marossa: The cleric bows his head and takes a breath. Eloais was the owner of the wagon but I'm not sure if he was inside when the conflagration started or not but I'm pretty sure he was...I have a bad feeling about this

Cahal you know the cards are part of a harrow deck, a deck of cards that astrologers use to tell the future or do palm readings and such things.

Cahal, drawing on his basic knowledge of alchemy, asks Oren: "Hey Oren, before you go! What do you make of these? Are they placed in a meaningful way you think? HEY RIPNOCK! COME HERE AND HAVE A LOOK!"

After he's satisfied, he'll follow Oren.

Ripnok interrupts his rant to go over to Oren. What is it Oren?

"Take a look at those cards. Are they just random, or do they mean anything to you?"

Male Goblin Alchemist 1

Ripnok will take a look at the cards and see if there is any pattern to them or anything strange or out of the ordinary, besides the obvious fiery wreckage that is.

Any sort of roll I should make here?

Male Dwarf Cleric of Angradd / 2

"Hmmm, let me see."

Oren takes a look at the cards Cahal has found.

Knowledge Religion: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (10) + 6 = 16

Knowledge Arcana: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (20) + 6 = 26

Male Goblin Rogue 1

Isz knows his way around fiery disasters and decides to launch his own investigation of the area, specifically looking for the starting point of the blaze, possible incendiary device, or anything that seems out of place.

Perception 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (15) + 0 = 15

Marossa bows her head momentarily as the prospect of a death happening so immediately on her expedition. Looking up again she says, "If you will ex..cuse me Sir, I will-will rejoin my companions."

After the halflings answer she will hop up quickly and move over towards the burnt wagon to see her new friends already searching through the wreck of a wagon. Her eyes scan over and around the wagon as she takes in this bad omen. The smell of burned human flesh washes over her nose and the unique stench of it turns her face a greenish tint and she quickly rushes away so as not to be seen. Having never dealt with a burned body before she quickly loses her earlier meal and feels light headed afterwards.

---Moments Later---

Marossa returns to the wagon and though her face is still pale she doesn't look quite as put off about the smell as before. Walking up to the group with her hand hovering near the collar on her neck a sad expression is written over her face.

"This um... this doesn't bode well... as far as beginnings go. Are we go-going to be meeting our leader soon?"

Oren: You know that these cards came from a fortune-telling deck(harrow deck) used by Varisian soothsayers and seeres. Each deck usually contains 54 cards but you only see about 20 scattered about the wagon, the rest must have burned fully. You can probably deduct that this deck belonged to the man who is now burnt to the floor of the wagon.

Isz:
You don't notice anything that was able to start the fire but you do notice a set of very faint foot prints leading to a man who seems to be studying the party at a distance. He's wearing armor and a long curved sword.

With Oren's roll all the information about the harrow cards has been found. Isz its up to you if you mention your findings or not which is why their spoilered.

Male -Unkown- Sorcerer level 1

Kesh waits for a moment as the others continue to obsess over the burnt wagon. Seeing as how there was little he could do on his own, he made his way over to Almah's tent. Poking his hooded head in he asks politely.

"Pardon the intrusion ma'am, but I was wondering if you had need of me for anything in particular." He waits patiently to be let in.

Almah starts a little at Keshs voice but then turns and rolls her eyes

Well come in if you want she says sounding mildly annoyed at the innturuption. She then turns to the man known as Garavel

Garavel where do you find these people...

He just shakes his head and then looks at Kesh

So whats the prognosis, is it as we assumed, is Eloais dead?

Not waiting for a response Almah speaks up again If he is dead we need to find out why, or more importantly by who's hand. Do you think you can handle that shorty0, or is the task going to go over your short little head?

Added the spaces to make it a little clearer who was talking when...kind of hard to differentiate speakers when they all use bold.

Male -Unkown- Sorcerer level 1

Kesh steps forwards and bows politely. "I am called Kesh." Kesh will attempt to improve the moods of the leaders by exchanging some casual and relieving conversation.
Diplomacy Check1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
Weather their moods improve or not Kesh will go on. "If I understand right, the burnt person in the cart is Eloais. I will return to ask people around if they may have seen anything." I feel like Inquisitor would have been great for this campaign. Oh well, that's what I get for not reading the player's guide.

Kesh will bow once more and leave heading back to the party. He will procede to ask each of the other party member's if they found any clues to what might have happened.

Fellow players. Kesh will ask each of you what you discovered. Respond how you wish

Male Dwarf Cleric of Angradd / 2

Oren frowns as he examines the cards and helps to gather them up. "It seems this unfortunate person had been a fortune teller of some kind. These are Harrow cards, used to divine one's future. Perhaps he was attempting to do a reading just prior to the fire. If so, it seems his divinations were unsuccessful."

As Kesh runs up, Oren examines the small form curiously. This one was a particularly unusual member of the small group that had journeyed so far over the last weeks. It was clear he -- at least, Oren thought it was a he -- was trying to hide something. Though Sarenrae sought illumination, Oren was making a considerable effort to allow the small form the privacy it obviously sought.

"Well, it is my sad responsibility to inform you that the soul who inhabited this wagon is dead. I was just going to report to Lady Almah my findings. If you will excuse me..."

He looks to the timid lass who'd approached the group moments before. "Come, Marossa, we'll go speak with Almah right now." He walks briskly off, carrying the few cards he's managed to gather in one hand.

Male Goblin Rogue 1

Isz snags the attention of the nearby Ripnok.

"I have two theories. The first is that it was the Nazis and they, in fact, have the jade monkey. The second is that that guy knows something, as supported by these."

He points out his discovery, a set of very faint foot prints leading to a man who seems to be studying the party at a distance. He's wearing armor and a long curved sword.

"The jade monkey will be ours."

Cahal starts to follow Oren to the tent, but he keeps an eye on the goblins, never comfortable to turn his back on them: "Are you coming?"

Not knowing what Nazi's are or a jade monkey, Ripnok is intrigued by the possibility of finding out. Speaking Goblin Should we rough him up a little bit and see if he'll talk?

Anyone looks on would see Ripnok staring daggers at some guy standing a little ways off and chattering to Isz in goblin.

For the sake of moving things along and since she mentioned she wanted to meet them anyway I'm going to assume that Marossa when with Oren and Cahal

Kesh you fail to change the attitudes of the two leaders and continue questioning all the party members.

As Oren, Marossa, and Cahal enter the tent, Almah turns to look at them.

Great more inturruptions. What do you want? she then spots Oren and smiles Oh your the man who helped put out the fire, what can I do for you?

To keep things simple I am going to cheat a little and post up an excel chart with everyone's attitudes towards you. There are 16 characters in the caravan besides party members but some of them will be lumped together.

Cahal bows his head in humility and remains silent until spoken to. Clearly, these are people with power. They may even be his new masters. Better behave.

Still, his mind is preoccupied. The two goblins are alone outside. He wish he could walk back out and check on th... check if they're all right.

Male Dwarf Cleric of Angradd / 2

Oren inclines his head in respect. "Lady Almah, I've come to inform you of what we've been able to determine thus far. The person who had been inside the burning wagon is, unfortunately, quite dead. There was nothing that could be done for him. My companions and I did a brief search and were unable to determine what caused the fire. We did find some of these Harrow cards, however. I don't know if this would interest you, but if he was in service to you, perhaps you'll like to see what cards survived in the fire? It's possible that the Gods had been seeking to work through your seer before he was, ahem, interrupted."

Oren holds out the cards he was able to locate.

"You might also like to meet two of the others who have responded for your request for service. These are my companions, Cahal ud'Din and Marossa. They were each of great assistance in my investigation. Is there anything else you require of us, my lady?"

Male -Unkown- Sorcerer level 1

Oren, Cahal ud’Din, and Marossa:
Almah takes the cards Oren hands her and looks a little sad. I hired him a month ago to do readings with these for me…[b]

Seeing that Almah needs a moment Garavel turns to talk to the three of you. [b]We do need your help. While me and Almah aren’t quite sure this fire was arson, if it was we need to get to the bottom of it. So that being said since you all were not here when the fire started we’re pretty sure that we can trust you to investigate this situation for us. We ask that all of you go and speak to everyone in camp and see if anyone is guilty of anything, and then come back and report your findings to us. Marossa if I’m not mistaken I saw you speaking with our Halfling cleric, why don’t you go see what he knows about the fire. Cahal is it? I believe I saw you helping the guards so maybe you could go talk to them and see what they know.

Oren feel free to stay here and question the two of them, they are currently friendly towards you

Kesh and the two goblins:
The man looks at you strangely and then clears his throat. If you’re thinking that I’m responsible your flat wrong. I was finishing up dinner by the campfire when the wagon went up in flames. And how do we even know if the fire was set? That idiot burned a hundred candles in his wagon. Perhaps he just got unlucky. Another explanation could be the fact that we’re in gnoll country. That’s why I was hired, I’m a gnoll expert. It was probably pugwampis, those things are always a nusense and have a huge presence a few miles from here. Instead of bothering me you should be looking for them. Or why don’t you look at those to, they’re goblins, their never up to any good.

Kesh you feel he is lying about where he was when the fire started but you aren’t sure what the truth really is.
