While we're on the subject of NPC cameos we'd like to see, I'll nominate the Captain of the Sunset Ship, from Legacy of Fire. The PCs could see a merchant of damaged goods, follow a treasure map to war-torn battlefields conquered by belligerent spiders, and maybe even use forked ruby rods to run for their lives. Could be good times!

+1 to "all of the seafaring that Savage Tide promised, but didn't deliver."

+ Weather, ships, scurvy crews.
+ Some underwater stuff, but not a lot. A dungeon crawl in an octopus' garden is not the same as a pirate adventure.
+ Ship combat, and rival crews were mentioned above.
+ Cannon would be nice, but I'd probably have a mutiny among my crew if that happened.
+ romancing wenches (and/or the governor's daughter) would be nice, but that doesn't need to be written into the text.
+ a treasure map (among false maps) that leads to buried treasure. Bonus points if it's tattooed on someone.
+ Aquatic foes, like sahuagin or merfolk would work. A kraken or an aboleth (or both?) strikes my fancy, too.

Oh: and sandboxy, with trade, too? That rocks!

NPC cameos are fun... but they're tricky. We try to avoid doing them TOO much, since we can't be sure how those NPCs might fare in any previous game that any previous group ran. And the more important a role that NPC already played in a previous adventure, the more likely that NPC's situation will be hard to assume.

We're doing a pretty significant amount of returning NPC action in Jade Regent, and I'm kinda waiting to see how making Ameiko Kaijitsu and Shalelu Andosanna into major NPCs in that AP turns out before I want to try it again.

As a result... there probably won't be many significant NPC cameos or returns in "Skull and Shackles."

We'll see, though. Our authors are constantly good at surprising us.

Yeah, that one was pretty good. :D

I would love to see an interesting central plot thread with at least two groups of NPC's vying for either opposite goals or the same thing such that some very unfriendly competition results. Then the players get to decide who to back and ally themselves with (pirates or naval personnel for example). Then, all GM's have to do is queue up one cluster of NPC's as the antagonists and the other as potential allies.

It would doubtlessly be like writing two AP's in one in order to have the various groups be detailed enough to act as either foe or friend whilst also providing fun pirate themed adventures. But it would be so slick (and something Paizo could pull off no doubt) to offer a kickass roleplay experience whether your group wants to stab pirates or plunder merchant vessels.

Oh and also Aboleths please...and R'lyeh

And at least one shark with a laser on its head (mutated ill tempered sea-bass are fine too I suppose if budgets are limited).

And if one of the authors could write a musical scenario paying homage to the HMS Pinafore for their initial manuscript...just so that James has to read it...or listen to it performed live.

Have you tried this module?

Or heck, this one?

Dark Archive

Things I would love to see in a Shackles AP:
--Legendary ships (in-world) or ghost ships.
--Wacky fights, a la Pirates of the Caribbean (like mechanics for fighting on moving terrain, or a living island, or rafters).
--A barfight.
--Less of the CG pirates, and more CN or CE pirates, considering that few real-life pirates were CG. Also, mutinies.
--+1 to Ghol-Ghan or Lirgen!
--+1 to the guide to ship parts. I know them, but my players will probably get excited, look them up, and all get different answers.
--Magically-enhanced ships, and new equipment for running a ship Golarion-style.
--Articles about Gozreh and Besmara. Pretty please?
--Foreigners from Tian-Xia... Pirate books and movies always get that much better when they go to Singapore. Though I guess Mediogalti Island could act as Singapore/Fiji (aka Pirate Heaven) in this case?

-lots of sea monsters like the Kraken, sea serpents, scylla, charabdis, giant crabs, etc.
-Mermaids
-Ship battles
-Underwater exploration in one of the last 3 APs
-Many strange islands(like one with giant animals, one with dinosaurs, cannibals, magical springs, strange curses)
-Ghost ship
-Living pirates, undead pirates, sea creature pirates, etc.
-Golems of coral, shell, and/or kelp
-A sea witch
-Aguatic fey
-A magical ship of some sort
-A creature that looks like an island
-Stats for the Leviathan
-Legandary ships and/or ship captains
-A graveyard of ships
-Uummm..."Dark water"

I've read both. City of Seven Spears doesn't have a central plot thread about which the faction alliances pivot (it says as much in the first paragraph of the adventure synopsis), and it doesn't have a nautical or pirate theme per say with the "kill a billion of enemy x" feature. Entombed with the Pharoahs is a cool adventure but I don't recall it having anything to do with pirates. I am also not suggesting that my requests for this AP have to mutually exclude things that have gone on in other adventures modules with the addition of a pirate themed twist.

Not sure if or how my benign request post somehow annoyed or angered you, but thanks for the links I guess. Analyzing previous AP's and Modules and argument baiting isn't really useful to THIS thread though.

I'd like to see more of what you want out of Skull and Shackles Erik, hopefully make a friend and continue on with the thread topic.

+1 for all these.

Considering the paizo crews love of researching mythological creatures, I would like to point out this (to my knowledge) little known sea-worthy spirit/fae. The Klabautermann.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klabautermann

Having one as a guardian spirit of your ship would be neat. Heck having a ship that can "level up" throughout the course of the AP - possibly even becoming an intelligent item would be awesome.

Liberty's Edge

So Pirates seldom sunk ships, they considered them to valuable. if it was a better ship they made it a flag ship. Most of the bigger name pirates actually had more than 1 ship in their fleet. it raised the odds of success as well as larger crews and gave you a back-up ship or escape ship if needed.

If a pirate captured a ship they would try to get others to join them. They in fact were far more democratic than most any other group. If someone did not join them or if the enemy ship fought back then they might kill. Most of the time they put you in a small boat and set you adrift.

Captains were seldom the leader of a ship accept in combat. The Quartermaster was the true leader and ran the ship in it's day to day affairs. Once the ship entered into a fight, it was the captain who took over. he could be replaced at anytime for any reason.

In our world of pirates anyone and everyone was welcome as crew, be they slave, native, Spanish or what ever. But usually if it was an english crew they did not spanish or french or dutch, all that matter was they signed the ships articles

Pirates would take anything of any value as plunder. Many pirates modified their ships. An example of this was the Whydah. The crew cut out bulk heads and cut more gun ports into her she could yeild more guns against an enamy.

So... I am excited to play this AP. Everything is better with pirates.

Neither. I thought you were looking for "rival factions" in general, so I was pointing out rival faction mods to see if that would strike your interest. If you're wondering about the tone of "or heck", well, look who wrote the long review for that one, I was trying to be ironic.

As for my preferences for the SAS AP, see page 1 of this thread. :-)

Interestingly, if you want even more of my opinion, check out this awesome post, written before SAS was even announced. Talk about having a finger on the pulse of Paizo. ;-)

Those are good points about Jade Regent and NPCs generally. The captain of the sunset ship, however, seems like the kind of NPC that were this a video game, would respawn. Basically, no matter how badly the LoF PCs killed him, there could just as easily be a new captain. Just something to consider. I just view CotSS' role to be to show up and announce "all your morally ambiguous choice are belong to us." Or maybe the PCs could just find a ruby rod in a bottle, either as buried treasure or out to sea.

I don't actually read a ton of threads so I doubt that was it unless it was in this thread. It's actually because I liked his concept and I think he'd be an awesome addition to fight and run away from or something. =)

For once I'd love to see part of a big adventure take place underwater. Full on aquabattle using all the monsters and powers to do aquatic adventuring. Maybe a coral castle that is controled by a Gillman faction, I dunno. Just some part that lets the PCs get wet.

I was going to cancel my AP subscription after Carrion Crown, then Jade Regent was announced. I decided to keep my subscription going until the end of Jade Regent, then they announce Skull & Shackles. They just keep getting better.

Professor, what's another word for pirate treasure?...

Capt. D wrote:

Well I think it's booty...booty...booty...that's what it is!

I too would love to see a whole book where the action is set underwater. It's something I've been keen to see done well since 1e days, and if anyone can do it, it's Paizo.

This AP makes me hope against hope that my PCs will not get to Serpents of Scuttlecove in a year. Tons of pirate art, and possible pirate adventures for Ch. 9 of Savage Tide? The timing would be perfect.

So ah, if you could feature some half-demon (or whole!) pirates with artwork in Skull and Shackles...

Bring in someone from the Serpent's Skull AP, James. Then you can call this one Serpent's Skull and Shackles.

Liberty's Edge

I have a National Geographic Book sitting on the shelf, which is called: "THE ILLUSTRTATED PIRATE DIARIES", from 2008.
I finally have a reason to really find time to get it from that shelf and read it - front to back!
the book on amazon

What's funny - the original book doesn't seem to be from NG, only the german one...

I am really excited too play also or If I can get a chance to run the game that would be fine too, But if any of my players want to play a ninja to battle the pirates they will be seeing davie jones locker....if not worse. But all in all like most of the ideas that were said.

Dark Archive

A definite yes to underwater adventuring. Although this shouldn't take up too much space in a pirate campaign, it would be good as an extra adventure.

Well here's a must have for the first book of this AP, Pirate Lingo!

Like

"aft off or taste me blade!" Translation: "Back off or taste my blade!"

The website for International Talk like Pirate day has handy pirate speak translator.

Call me slow, but while answering a question on another thread, I found the AP pages for S&S. Looks cool!

Nice!

Any thoughts on odd market behaviour in the shackles? Basically theres good acess to plentiful and cheap varisian goods. Some access to innersea port goods, and almost zero access to anything else.

Magic would be expensive as ever, but some goods would be almost piling up and have its traders begging anyone to take them.

But oh yes.. old style opera, pirates, prostitutes and neverending supplies of rum! Aside from the private island, what more can a halfelf wish for?

I think one of the adventures (or part of one) should have the PCs struggling to contend with some kind of magical scurvy or something while still trying to deal with any other antagonists they need to face.

"Yarr! Eat more oranges, me hearties!"

(But no, seriously, it might make for an interesting and different sort of challenge.)

I introduced my wife to RPGs with Kingmaker and we are actually solo-ing it with NPCs (she plays/I GM that's it). Although I am now suffering from multiple personality issues from all the NPCs I've got going, we are having a crazy amount of fun. When I told her about this AP coming up, her eyes sparkled.

Huston, I may have a problem. :)

James and staff, bring it on!!!

SOOO looking FW to this:

I would like to see:
- Ship2Ship combat
- Ship2Land combat (Fortress)
- Ship2Monster combat (THE kraken)
- Trade (especially selling the plunder)
- some traderoutes to plunder
- provisioning rules (food, water, grog)
- a selection of Ships and their stats
- some cities to sack
- WEATHER (especially storms)
- Hazzards (corel reef, sandbank, plague, Scurvy)
- Special Magic spells for Ships (e.g. Wind)
- three headed MONKEYS!

ARRRR!

Liberty's Edge

Definitely coming to the party late on this one. FWIW, this AP REALLY has me itching for it to come out ASAP! Can't wait!

What I would like to see involved in it mirror alot of the great ideas already posted:

A little underwater adventure - specifically some Azlanti ruins complete w/ aboleth masters.
Major agreement with a ghost ship slowly listing away that must been epxlored
Ship to ship combat
Mechanics for fighting among the riggings and ropes.
A Kraken
Ship to creature fighting - see Kraken above specifically
Mechanics for crew and ship building - not unlike Kingmaker's ability to form armies and buildings.
Love the idea of gnoll pirates - to whomever listed that one! A slaver crew of epic prorportions if i ever heard of one!
Trade routes, specimen gathering at distant exotic locales and exploration.
Inclusion and emphasis on weather and effects.

Here's a few more ideas that I have.

"LOST" island where the PCs must explore - full of dinosaur type encounters

A notorious legendary pirate ship continues to be a thorn to the PCs - whose crew is made up entirely or primarily of WERE-SHARKS. This one is a big want for me. :-)

Eye of Abendengo creates a bizarre paranormal storm that sends the ship and crew back in time - think Final Countdown movie - perhaps to a time in which they confront a legendary pirate threat and naval battle that ensued that is locked in the annuls of Golarion History.

Typically the player's guide is released at the same time as the first chapter of the AP. :)

Figurehead golems, immobile ofcourse.
When added to a ship they come alive. Unlike most golems, almost all are intelligent.

They add to speed and armor of the ship. In addition to firebreaths, healing, lightning bolts or whatevr they have been designed to do.
Some even summon extra crew as needed!

I would like to see the Players guide come out!

As a general request, I'd like to see a sidebar suggesting ways to extend an AP, possibly by linking in with other Pathfinder modules, for those of us who prefer to run their campaigns at a slower level progression rate.

More specifically with this AP, it would be great if it could be combined with Serpent Skull in some way to make it a 12 part classic.

I will likely resubscribe to the pathfinder adventure path. I LOVE pirates!

Ship to Ship combat would be cool as I'm not very familiar with it. The pirate theme is a fresh concept as I haven't seen it done too much. I'm not sure underwater combat is the way to go in an AP involving pirates, unless there are encounters involving Krakens,Sauhagiun,Mermaids or other underwater creatures. Also wondering if any decision has been made on whether or not to include the creature we designed at Paizocon, and if so what volume will it be in?

Alas... that creature will not be appearing in a Pathfinder Bestiary. But don't worry; we'll have PLENTY of piratey/tropical monsters for you to play with, both in the six Skull & Shackles bestiaries, but also in the significantly large bestiary in Isles of the Shackles.

I know the AP doesn't release until March, but is there any chance of releasing the Players' Guide early?

How many monsters are in the Isles of the shackles?

Tom Qadim wrote:

Practically none. As I understand it, the Players' Guides are usually still being written and are not ready to be relesaed until about the same time as the first volume of the AP is done.. this, in part, because the later parts of the AP are still being worked on, and changes there can cause changes in the content of the Players' Guide.
