Holding two-handed weapon in one hand

Rules Questions

Liberty's Edge

I have a character with a TH reach weapon and two natural attacks (claws). When someone comes within my reach (adjacent to me) can I hold my TH weapon in my off hand and make a single claw attack with my primary hand?

If not is my only quick option to 5-foot step or drop my weapon?

Yes. You can 'hold' it but not 'wield' it. If you used it to hit someone, you would use it as in improvised weapon that is too big. That 1d8 at -6 to hit and can't use any enchantments on the weapon as you are not using it as much as clobbering with it. Oh, and if in your offhand youd take another whopping penalty to hit on top.

It is legal to hold the weapon in one hand. I takes a free action to do so. Remember that you can only do it on your own turn, so you can't adjust in the enemy's turn, for example to be able to make an AoO.

While you can attack with one claw on your own turn, in most cases I expect that you are better of taking that 5-ft step to use your reach weapon.

Yes you can hold it and take an attack with the other claw. Not sure where this bit about using a two-handed weapon sized for the user as an improvised weapon that is too big, this is sounding very much like a house rule.

How about the variant of a caster using a falchion and holding it in one hand to cast a spell that turn. Would that work. Sorry for jacking your thread this is a question I was thinking of posting too.

if you're wielding a 2H weapon, you can let go of the weapon with one of your hands (free action). You're now only carrying the 2H weapon, not wielding it, but your free hand is now free to attack or help cast spells or whatever. And at the end of your turn if your free hand remains free you'd be able to return it to grip your 2H weapon so you can still threaten foes and take attacks of opportunity if you want.
