PFS Factions and a New Barbarian

Forgive me. I'm new and stupid.

Why does Cheliax, which is LE and Motto "Law No Matter What", listed in the PFS guide to be a good fit for a Barbarian?

To the point, I have a CN Half-Orc Barbarian with a Chariama of 7. Which faction would be best for him? I know technically that i could play him in any faction, but which faction's missions will he be able to accoplish, most likely. Are all faction missions interpersonal in nature or are any of them more task oriented?

Thanks.

You, sir, are not stupid! I asked the same question of Josh Frost at GenCon two years ago.

The answer I got was that, although Cheliax is unlikely to produce barbarians out of their own society, they are certainly not above "using" the skill sets of barbarians to do their dirty work. The types of missions the Cheliax faction assigns often, although not always, fit well with your class skills (e.g. Intimidate). Faction missions come in all types - usually skill checks, sometimes ability checks, rarely a saving throw, and sometimes it's just being or looking in the right place at the right time and mentioning it to the GM! Remember, not all barbarians are built the same (I love archetype variants), just because most barbarians will be successful working for Cheliax doesn't mean all will.

What faction is best for you? Whatever you think most closely matches the personality and goals you envision for your character! You really can't go wrong, assuming your goal is to have fun. No matter which faction you choose, you'll always find a few faction missions that involve some kind of skill check waaaay outside of your character's skill set, or with an uncomfortably high DC. In those cases, hope that your group has other fellow faction members with those skills, or maybe you can convince an unwitting dupe from another faction to do a favor for you (unless it's a "secret mission, don't get caught by the other players" situation). Think outside the box, too, and come up with some other ingenious way to accomplish your mission, if it's one with a little flexibility. You're not expected to earn every Prestige Award in every scenario, either, sometimes your Venture Captain asks you to do things that are just too hard for you. Such is life. Build up a diverse set of skills, including some that are outside of your class's normal skill set, to maximize your opportunities. And never underestimate the Knowledge skills!

I too was a bit confused about the class suggestions in the faction descriptions. I too was looking for a place for a barbarian, and found that it was listed as a bad idea for the Andoran faction.

Wait, what? The "let's liberate everyone" faction that's freeing slaves every other weekend doesn't fit well for a class that's all about not being confined and wanting to roam free?

Personally, I've stopped looking at those suggestions. Just pick the faction that feels right for your character. Read the faction description, and if it sounds like something your character would get behind, then sign him up!

Class suggestions will be replaced with examples of possible faction missions PCs should expect as a member of that faction. This should give people a better sense of what character concepts work than simply "barbarians are a good fit for this faction" as two barbarians may be very, very different from one another.
