What do I need to do, in order to open the .epub file and read it, on either my Mac computer or my iPad?
You need to use a program that can handle ebooks. For a Mac or PC, Calibre and Stanza seem to be popular free apps.
For your ipad you can just use itunes. http://www.apple.com/itunes/inside-itunes/2010/04/using-itunes-to-add-epub- files-to-ibooks.html

So, I purchased one of the Pathfinder Tales books, and it appeared in My Downloads. I downloaded it.

You're an Apple user... I knew I liked you. :)
For ePubs I generally open iTunes, drop the epub file onto the window and iTunes copies it to the books tab on the left. Then I just plug in my iPad and when syncing I check the box for that book and it gets loaded into iBooks.
For my iMac I prefer PDFs over epubs. I just have not found an epub reader I like. Maybe Apple will make an iBooks for the Mac, until then I use epubs exclusively on the iPad and PDFs on the iMac.
If you find a decent or better epub reader for the Mac, let me know. It would be nice to be able to use one.

Another route to get the ePub file to an eReader app on your iPad: Copy the ePub file to your Dropbox folder (if you're using an iPad I very, very highly recommend installing Dropbox). Then open up the Dropbox app on your iPad. Choose the file and then choose to send the file to iBooks (or Stanza or whatever app you want to use). It will synchronize back into the Books section of your iTunes library on your Mac when you next plug in your iPad
