Odd Ranger Build Help

Advice

Im building a Ranger for a campaign im running soon, he will be the standard party buddy. The thing is I cant really build him in a way i feel good with, so I was hoping you guys could maybe help me out making him. Hes going to be level 1, 25 point buy, using character traits and I know I want him Human. Hes odd in the fact that his backstory involves him leaving his old home as they were pro Undead, I was thinking of multiclassing later into Undead sorcerer but that feels like its only adding complications. What do you chaps think?

Check out Treantmonks guide to rangers for some great advice for rangers. I would suggest a switch hitter. Put your first favored enemy as undead and keep pumping that as you go up in levels. Pick a trait like child of the Temple to get Knowledge Religion. Probably take Underground for your favored terrain.

As for the level of Undead Sorcerer it could be interesting from a role playing stand point. Your character would be an undead hunter that is fighting his own heritage. You could also see about taking some trait or feat that allows some minor spells with the effect coming from your undead heritage. This way you would not have to sacrifice ranger levels.

Very interesting concept. Done properly a Ranger can be a worse enemy to undead that a Paladin.

Yeah, Im really on the Fence about Undead Sorcerer, I might just go All Ranger stuff to keep from having to stretch his points out to much, Ive decided on Skirmisher Ranger though.

Okay, why do you want to be a ranger? Why do you want to be human?

My advice is to plan the entire character level build out from 1st to whatever level you see this campaign going. Have a plan laid out. You can later deviate from the plan to a different plan.. but there needs to be a plan.

Undead sorcerer is not the best idea as charisma is the one stat a ranger really does not need.

Flavorwise an undead infiltrator might work as well as you had connections to the undead before with your family and now you are trying to infiltrate and destroy them. This might be better than going undead sorcerer and pick benefits that help with hunting undead. You could get darkvision at 3rd level to help with sneaking around in graves. Yes you can take multiple archetypes but this works together. This is a way to keep ranger levels up which increases favored enemy bonuses against undead and still have the hurt the undead from the inside feel to it.

Well his culture is mainly undead looking to co-exist with the rest of the world, not nicely more leave us alone. But whenever a child shows certain qualities they choose him to be raised to one day take the throne as a Lich to lead them for however long he can. My character was in that situation, but he bailed on it. Ranger because hes been on his own since he left and Human because he doesnt have a beard so he couldnt be dwarf.
