So here's my project for the week: Completely ripping out the garage interior, insulating it, "repairing" the concrete floor, adding drywall, carpeting, and lighting, and hoping Impus Major likes it enough to move in.
So, since many of you are in construction, any suggestions on a "decent but not expensive or exhausting" way to fix the floor? The cracks are up to 1" wide and 3"-4" deep, plus since the slab was poured in 1929 there's been a bit of seismic activity.
My plan is to just buy a 5-gallon bucket of concrete patch, fill in the cracks, ignore any hope of leveling, and put a carpet over it, figuring a teenager can survive much worse. I know the proper thing to do would be to jackhammer out the entire slab and re-pour it, but with $500 to my name and 4 days to work on it, that's not happening.
Anyway, I'll take photos of the progress, because it's silly.

I think the patch job is your best bet, replacing the slab is going to be harder and more expensive then anyone will tell you.

Yeah, doesn't look too bad, patching should do the trick.
Maybe it's just the picture, but finding a way to make it look bigger might go a long way towards habitation, looks a bit claustrophobic in there, but that could just be how the picture was taken. :-)

I cut a hole in the wall and build a pine staircase. The kids call it the "gateway to Whimseyshire".

He also (in)famously switched hot and neutral on all the grounded outlets in the studio, which would have been loads of fun if any of our electronics had ever shorted. The studio ended up being so mis-built we just bulldozed it and rebuilt it from scratch.
But yeah, just wait 'til tomorrow afternoon's picture when you get to see the garage WITHOUT all the shelving and other crap on the walls. I've got all day. I've got a 3' crowbar and a 6-pound sledge. I think things can be convinced to come loose...

Curses! And here I spent all the Christmas money on presents for the family.
Although I would have to bring my own 20 lb sledgehammer, I just don't think I can use something so tiny for demolition. Maybe for nailing it all back together with 4" inch nails at the end.

If I wasn't worried about exactly what's IN those walls, I'd totally do it. But it's ancient lath-and-plaster, so I'm going the whole "respirator and goggles, HEPA vaccum at the end".
Somehow I don't want to expose my kids to that. Go figure...

Alright, I read you. Unfortunately, I know f$#@-all about pouring cement other than "use a level, dummy" and "make sure you get all the air bubbles out or you won't get paid." I think I've hammered up more cement than I've poured. I went to trade school for electrical, and I've worked with landscaping, drywall, and demolition/remodeling, so if you want to know stuff about that, I can give an answer (not necessarily a good and/or relevant one, though).

Of course he read the book! Otherwise, how could he have known to put that kick-ass Dwarven song and dance number in the first movie?I thought "never bothering to read the book" was the biggest problem ;-)...Hobbit rant...This may help explain some of the movie's problems.
The thing is, I never read the book, and even I knew that wasn't even close to it. It wasn't a bad movie, just bad in comparison to what the previous standard had been.
Although I'm tempted to use the Advanced Race Guide to hammer out a half elf-half dwarf race for my brother's campaign "Tolkien said I could!" "Peter Jackson's Tolkien isn't recognized in this Tolkien-esque world!"
