So, here’s the story on the PODs:
When I originally called and described the contents of the house, they estimated I’d need 2 of the largest size PODs (16’x8’x8’). I didn’t know any better, so agreed to that. Set it up to have one delivered on the 22nd, picked up today, with the second being dropped off today and picked up Wednesday.
I was curious as to what if I didn’t need the second full size POD. When I asked, they said I could call before 4 pm the night before #2 was delivered and either cancel it or change it out for a smaller one.
We jammed as much s!$& as we thought we could into this first POD. It was pretty damned full. Looking at what I had left, I called to see if I could exchange the second full-sized POD for a smaller size. They said they didn’t have any smaller sizes available, but I could just use the tie-down points on the big POD. I told them I’d rather cancel the second one, and did so.
Cancelling the second POD saves me at least $2000 in transportation fees (plus some storage fees). A fair exchange for the probably $250-300 worth of book shelves I shall now give to my good buddy Todd.
I’ve still got the 5x8 uhaul I’ll be towing behind my SUV, plus the interior of the truck. And I’m considering going over to Pep Boys to see about a roof rack storage box.

I dread when we have to move again.
I've got to say, if you have folks to help, and despite some of the hassles, the PODs thing was really awesome. Those containers hold a lot of stuff, if you're good at packing. Really, it's kind of like a big game of 3D Tetris.
But there is something to be said for those moving companies who'll come in and pack up your stuff for you.

When Sarah and I finally buy a house in Houston, it'll be a hell of a lot easier. Then we'll just need a U-haul truck for the big stuff, and smaller trucks/vehicles for everything else. Hell, I may even do a POD again.
But if we time that one right, we can close on a new house and take possession with a month or two left on our current lease, get all the big stuff moved in at one time, then take our time with all the small stuff.

PODs are expensive. I went with UBox by UHaul. That said, they were kind of a pain in the ass, so I can't say I would endorse them.

Would it just be across town? Those moves aren't so bad, since you can make multiple trips if you have to.

Zombeh, Glad that your moving is progressing well,... ish (?) ;)
I've always hated moving. Mainly because I have a lot of c@#$ that I just can't seem to let go of, and I always end up doing all the heavy lifting myself. :(
I've heard good and 'meh' about PODS, personally the last two times I had to move I packed everything up myself, but had a company load and move all the c@#$ from state to state. Was about the same as a PODS rental (when I called anyway) and THEY loaded & unloaded the truck, not me. :)
Good luck on what's left! :D

Yeah, it would likely - I don't want to move too far, my parents' house is in a really convenient location for work and church, so as long as I'm in the same general vicinity (to the greatest extent, possibly as far out as Ooltewah or Greysville or possibly Hixson, but not much further) it'll be fine.
That and I'm pretty sure I can call on a few local church friends for an extra hand or two.

Ugh. We have no water today because of main repairs in our area. They said they distributed doorknob hangers to all affected houses on Friday. We didn't get one, so didn't know until after the water was shut off. Then the lady who answered when I called had an attitude, as if it was my fault we didn't get notice.
I started sneezing and coughing last night and am definitely sick today. We came to Puffin's mom's house to help watch the kids while she goes to doctor appointments. In addition to the appointments, she's also come down sick.
We all have way too much to do to be sick.

Yeah, I actually paid a moving service to handle my huge stuff when I moved into my house. It wasn't very much. My mom and I filled a small U-Haul for a couple of trips across town to handle everything else. I was very grateful for the movers when it turned out to be one of the hotter Houston Augusts on record, with over 100 degree highs for 30 days straight. O.o

Sorry to hear about this, Treppa. I hope you feel better soon!
Also, I love it when I call someone whose job is ostensibly to be a customer representative, and that person gives off an attitude like yours did. Yes, she's probably fielded many similar calls, and, yes, I'm sure she dealt with people who ignored the door hangers, but that is absolutely no excuse to treat everyone poorly. Ugh.
