even...even Up?Ugh, Pixar. I loathe Pixar. I don't care for the animation style, and I really don't care for the storytelling. It's sloppy and relies too much on manipulating the audience's emotions. People keep telling me how wonderful their films are and I'm like, are we even watching the same movie? Because that totally sucked and I want my time back!
Tl;dr: I feel about Pixar much like Freehold feels about Whedon

What does it say about me that I see a man on the street even more appallingly dressed than I (white corporate shirt with the thin blue vertical "power stripes", tucked in to a pair of shapeless navy shorts, knobbly knees (not a fashion choice, but it added to the effect), white athletic socks, and blue tennies a couple of shades lighter than the shorts), and my first feeling is one of jealousy?

Toothache strikes again. I think it is the strongest pain I felt when it comes to teeth. Still not beating some of my headaches but really annoying. Especially that I should be already sleeping.
Going to a pharmacy for a different painkiller.

Ah, the terrible trials and travails of the upper middle class: You think you're well-off, and you try to do "rich person things", and... OW!
First was staying at the Aulani resort in Hawaii at all; we went through our travel agent, Costco, our annual pass discounts, anything, and we still had a lot of difficulty just getting the price down into "Grand Californian" range. While I love the luxury and comfort of a high-end resort hotel, anything over $500/night really starts to hurt. And yeah, this was more.
Then came learning that in spite of all the billboards around here advertising round trip fares to Hawaii for $98 each way, those are only during solar eclipses after a one-legged goat has kicked a Yugo into working condition, and the *real* price is $1000. Each. Add car rental and one week in Hawaii was rapidly approaching the $10,000 mark.
That's an eye-popping number, even for us.
And we're not alone. Our friends went to Hawaii just a couple of months ago, and, after seeing the prices of actually DOING anything, they chose to stay at the hotel pool for a week, figuring they couldn't afford anything else.
Well, we're tirelessly pressing on, and learned that the Aulani will take care of all your activity needs here.
Check out the prices. A day trip to the big island is "only" $500 each, so "just" $2000 for the day for the four of us.
So yeah, it looks like a "luxury" weeklong trip to Hawaii runs about $30,000, which is significantly over our budget, so we're going to have to pick and choose what we do. But gods, I have to admit how grateful I am that after so many years of having very little income between the two of us and wondering whether we'd ever be able to afford to do ANYTHING, we can afford to do something like this once every few years. It's pretty much, "We can afford to do this ONCE, while the kids are teenagers and will remember it for the rest of their lives, so we really need to do it."
But we're SOOOOO doing the zipline thing. The kids would never forgive us if we didn't!
And food? Souvenirs? Who needs 'em? We'll just starve for a week and pay for activities. It's the thing to do!

I'll admit. Coming from a poor family, which granted, in America means we had food on the table, a dog, two cats, a car, and small vacations, I find it impossible to really relate to this problem.

Pretty much my point, however poorly made. Seems like one of those U.S. things that no matter how much you have, you always find yourself feeling just a little short of having enough to do everything you want to.

I dressed up, went to pharmacy, the pain subsided, bought pyralgine (metamizole), went back to home with the pain slowly dwindling to near non-existent. Now it is rising again, though nowhere near the previous level. I took one pill - we'll see how it will deal with the pain...

NH, either the prices have gone up a lot in the last three years, or you're getting really really really bad deals. We spent a lot less that what you're quoting, stayed in one of the nicest places on Oahu and still were able to do all the activities we wanted and eat where we liked. Granted we had one less person to pay for, so that accounts for some of the discrepancy, and we didn't try to do any island hopping either, but we were flying in from Michigan so longer flights which theoretically should cost more. Still, I'd go shopping for better deals if I were you. Cause that sounds ridiculous.
Edit: Full disclosure, we got amazing deals because we booked everything last minute. So if you're willing to wing it and deal with a total lack of planning, you too can save thousands of dollars. :P

Not sure if I've suggested it before, but just in case I haven't, make a paste with ground cloves and water and rub it into the gums where you have toothache. It's a topical anesthetic that works better than anything you can get at a drug store. It won't fix everything, but it does help make it more bearable.

It's not as hot as you think it's going to be. I pretty much melt in the heat too, but I was fine. Those ocean breezes make a huge difference to how the temperature actually feels. I was only uncomfortably hot once the whole week and it was because we were in a museum with poor air circulation. The bigger challenge is not getting horribly sunburned. :)

I do tend to use a lot of kitchen remedies though. It's kind of funny how many. It's not like I'm into alternative medicine or anything either. It's just all the stuff I learned growing up, and that works. :)

Well, we're definitely doing it to ourselves with the Aulani -- that's a conscious choice and a given. I'm sure we could have found a perfectly nice place in the $150-$200 range and saved a couple thousand.
But the airfare was amazingly bad, and we went to multiple sites trying to bring it down. And I'm afraid we don't have flexible vacation times, so "winging it" isn't an option. Maybe that's why they have us over a barrel.
I'm honestly hoping that the rest of the trip isn't nearly as bad as I'm thinking. I know they say Hawaii prices are as bad as Bay Area prices, but I'm definitely hoping to spend a few days just toodling around in a rental car and spending under $100 for a day of "adventuring", meals included. We'll see.

Oh, I "lived" there quite a bit when I was young: My best friend moved there between 5th and 6th grade, and my parents cheerfully shipped me over for a month every summer for a few years just to be rid of me.
