I've been working about 50 hours a week for about six weeks now and boy do I get wiped out by Friday.

Last night I went to install Mass Effect Legendary Edition on the PS 5 and the next thing I know I'm waking up and it's 10 o'clock. The hilarious part is I was sitting on a kitchen chair when I fell asleep and didn't even slouch over or anything (I know this because apparently the kids were taking bets on if and when I would tip or slouch over, which Crookshanks won) and as soon as Mass Effect loaded they pulled up their chairs on either side of me and played Minecraft, so I woke up after two hours still clutching the controller with a game I never play on and the kids sitting casually on either side communicating with each other through their headsets. It was pretty weird.

I figured out why I'm so wiped out on Fridays though! Coworker pretty much checks out after 9 am so if I want to make any progress I've got to do it all myself.

Unfortunately I prefer to end my week on a high note and coworker prefers to coast at the end of the week so I'm just going to have to deal with it.

From my conversation with the HR guy, the pay should be about 4-5k/year more, starting paid time off is at least as much as I was getting after 7.5 years at the old job, the health insurance carrier is the same as what I had, so I won't have to change my doctors...and the work should be dealing with less managerial problems, less direct user contact, and more work on servers and project implementation instead of "stupid user problems", though there will still be some of that.

But my every day work existence should not be filled with continual anguish.

That sounds amazing!

Today'll be an interesting "test" of the Bay Area's supposed "tolerant" atmosphere. I expect it to fail.

Costco announced that vaccinated shoppers no longer have to wear masks. I'll be wearing a mask anyway. I'm wondering:
- Will the pro-maskers confront the unmasked?
- Will the anti-maskers confront the masked?
- Or will everyone mind their own business and let people do their own thing?

Sadly, even around here, I think the third option is too much to hope for.

Having finally watched the first season of Picard, we've now downloaded the first season of the BBC Three Musketeers series from 2014, because Santiago Cabrera (Captain Rios from Picard) plays Aramis, and Peter Capaldi, who I would watch read the phonebook, is Richelieu.

So far the writing isn't great, but the sets and costumes are amazing.

It seems a few weeks premature to me. Most places in the US did not open vaccination to the general adult population until early- to mid-April, which means that that population is not fully vaccinated at this point (unless they got J&J or something).

Starting today, you don't have to wear mask in open space as long as you keep proper distance around here. You still need to wear it while in closed space or in crowd.

Earlier today I have read a note of an acquaintance of mine about a fight that he witnessed in a shop over the lack of mask.

Whether or not it's premature, it's what many major retail outlets have done.

As for Costco, I'm going to have to call it a "no-op": In the local Costco everyone was still wearing a mask, everyone was still social distancing, and so there really wasn't a chance for conflict. We've become so accustomed to masks and social distancing as the norm that nobody's thinking to challenge it yet.

Nothing has changed here, you're still required to wear a mask indoors, irregardless of vaccination status.

Don't know what it's going to be like at work today, but over the course of the past week *before* the announcement we had a half-dozen a-holes who weren't, and then got pissed off because we were insisting on at least ten feet distance (to make up the difference for not having the mask).

"Oh, really? What kind of service is that?"

"You're gonna be like that?"

"I demand to be treated with respect!"

"How dare you treat me like I'm sick!?"

"I don't need to wear a mask, I'm VACCINATED! Do you even *know* what that means?"

"Are you STUPID?"

...etc, etc, et al (and usually from folks reeking of something nasty and/or coughing out half a lung.)

Seriously, between that and our Active Shooter Situation (read the acronym, it's about as helpful and accurate as the training) the temptation is *quite* strong to misbehave (though given our employer we'd have to do the clean-up afterwards which is what is probably preventing horrible incidents).

Funny is that I went for a walk, and a lot of people who weren't wearing mask where more strict at keeping distance than before.

Yesterday was our first "normal" day after 430 days of lockdown in California, and closer to 445 for us because by the end of February we saw the writing on the wall and had stocked up at Costco on everything we thought we might need. (As an amusing aside, I didn't even think of toilet paper as an "essential", but we were running low so I got us a Costco pack that lasted us through the entire TP shortage.)

I went to Costco and it was pleasantly mellow: Everyone was wearing a mask, everyone followed social distancing rules, and I was in and out in under 45 minutes. GothBard, Shiro, and I went to the Ranch 99 (an Asian market and mall) and stocked up on snacks and tea and the Sheng Kee bakery, then sat around snacking and watching Love, Death, and Robots. At 5:00 pm we went to Bowl'd for a sit-down indoor dinner (the food was amazing, and we were all wondering whether it was because they were just on that night, or whether it was because none of us had had fresh food from a restaurant kitchen in over a year), then off to Forbidden Island for tiki drinks.

An amazingly normal day. It was quite the experience.

Was that the one that people said Netflix showed the episodes in different orders, presumably based on your other viewing behavior? Either way, never saw it.

It's always fun living with Impus Major.

This morning's entertainment? His musings on a survey of Americans and what animals they can defeat in unarmed one-on-one combat.

Rat: 72%. Impus Major was astonished that 28% of Americans do not believe that they could defeat a rat in unarmed combat.

Elephant: 8%. Yes. 8% of Americans say they can take out an elephant in unarmed combat.

Grizzly Bear: 6%. Leading to Impus Major's pertinent question: "What kind of chad says he can take out an elephant in unarmed combat, but then says, 'Grizzly bear? No way!'"

Utterly delightful waking up in the morning and being exposed to this nonsense. Especially considering that Impus Major was up until around 2:45 am last night (he woke us up singing in the shower at 2:30 in the morning) and then got up at 7:00 am.

Yep. He's a little loopy. It's hilarious.

Even worse, so far all of the tests on the Calico have come back negative, so $1000 down the tubes so far, and an $800 ultrasound today, and we had to drug the living daylights out of her last night and this morning to get her prepped. So loopy boy. Loopy Calico. What can possibly go wrong?
