I am back from deadly illness! (ok it wasn't really deadly, but I thought it was for awhile).

Welcome back!

How's the iPad 2 working for you? I'll be getting mine in a couple of weeks, but I was curious.

Actually it is working out very well. I used it last weekend for gaming and it was really useful for looking up rules quickly.

Other than dice rolling and the battlemat, my games have been run from the iPad lately.

I'm always anxious for ways to reduce the tabletop footprint. You need so much STUFF to play sometimes, and the clutter dries me nuts. This is working out for you then?

But that would be no fun. :)

I don't want to take then fun away from anyone else.

I look more to it as complementing one's fun ... and being mean to Sharoth is a complement. :P

Ooooh, complementary meanness as opposed to complimentary meanness.

I saw what you did there. I screw up that word in the same fashion I mess up than / then.

You and most of the rest of the world. :/

Oops. You used the correct word.

I was using "complimentary" as a synonym for free. :)

That and he wanted to make me read it more than once to make sure I was reading it write.[sic]

Jeremy, your situation blows. I'm surprised they rescinded a written offer, but I suppose anything is possible. I thought your husband had something lined up in Scotland, too - is that off as well? Are there alternative funding possibilities, or is the whole offer gone? I hope wherever you wind up works out for the best.

I see a similarity to my situation, although mine is more voluntary - I still have the offer on the table, but the deadline is right around the corner. There will be some hard discussions this weekend.

The conditions of my government funding were for this fall and for an international university. So as a result I lost it, and my husband did have a contract but the funding for my husbands contract was also cut as part of the $20 million in cutbacks. So this is the situation and it sucks big time.

Indeed it doth sucketh majorly.

I'm also dreading the talks that Congress is having about slashing funding allocations to the Pell Grant (and those related) for those who are unable to afford a college education. Given that I can't seem to find a suitable job that was comparable to what I was making (going on 15 months now) and I'm being glossed over due to a lack of a degree despite my years of knowledge and experience that can't just be acquired from a certificate, going to school is the option I have to take in order to keep afloat to pay the bills when unemployment benefits expire.

It's even more difficult when there are a number of jobs that I could easily pick up on-the-go or wing-it, but my hearing impairment essentially excludes me from being in consideration despite whatever protections the Disabilities Act claims to provide for that minority class. Let's be realistic - me being on a phone for hours - even if it means someone to stand in as a interpreter - isn't going to happen in the long run as it isn't cost effective. And it is hard to prove such exclusions given the number of other available candidates already out there in the market versus the number of jobs available. Otherwise, it becomes its own form of affirmative action. Grey area. :/

Anime update - for the low price of 40 dollars, i got..

season 2 of Black Lagoon
Movie 2 of Zeta Gundam - a New Translation
Season one of Gunslinger Girl

Take that, Sharoth!!

Urizen, I too am concerned about these proposed changes to the Pell grant.

Liberty's Edge

Freehold: Yeah, I was concerned about this too. It's why they're changing the Pell grant, afaik.

If they do this, then education becomes privy to the class that can afford it out of their own pocket given the current cost involved to attend. And the the gulf becomes greater between the upper versus the middle & lower class. I fear we're looking at a oligarchy-plutocracy all in the name of cost effectiveness and sacrifices while believing that those in the upper class who get similar breaks will actually turn around and use it to fund jobs. I'm cynical that it'll create more means for those to continue to hoard what wealth they already have in the manners some presently do in order to avoid paying their share of the tax allocation. Besides, they're also the same class that can afford to pay another to avoid such by locating this loopholes.

I don't intend this to be a declarative blanket statement, but it's how I'm feeling these days when I just want to be able to break even in fairness on paying what I owe.

*sighs*

Spoiler:
Oh, one of my friends was on the whole abortion thingie / evolution is worong, creationism is correct rant. He then turned to me and asked my opinion, but in a nasty way. I amswered and then he turned what I said back at me in a nasty way. My "best friend" repeated that remark and I am still pissed. I am trying real hard to just forgive, but it is hard, especially since this is not the first time this has happened..

Sorry to hear about your friend, Sharoth. I hate it when people are like that. They don't care to discuss things, they just want to be right. There is no arguing with them, they can't hear anything besides their own voice.

Find solace in knowing that he doesn't get what he's saying either.

Morning, all. What did I miss?

Well, Alec decided against revealing to Jenny the identity of the man who stole her collection of rare My Little Pony action figures, preferring instead to try and blackmail Seb...the culprit. Meanwhile, Juan and Heinrich thought it best that the truth about the "computer virus" that crippled the company network on the same day as their charity golf tournament be buried, never to see the light of day. And, across town, Bill continued to annoy Scott with his nitpicking....No, wait! That's my soap opera.

And, in other news....

Crisis averted thanks to the judicious re-examination of available technical data.

Sharoth - I feel your pain on that one, been there, it sucks.

The budget, and related issues - If congress can't do something before friday, I'm working for the american people for free. I'm not sure if my rental agency will take "You'll have to talk to congress" scrawled on my next apartment check, or how I'll be getting back and forth to work once my savings run dry.

I've already told my commanding officer that if I'm not getting paid, I'm growing a beard and wearing a bandana.

I'd be great in Spider-Man!

If forgiveness is hard and the wall is hard, is forgiveness a wall? Can forgiveness be reinforced out of concrete?
