also, i did follow up with the parental units, and their early voting was just for state and local primaries. my gut-punch reaction wasn't fully reasoned -- no convention yet, no ratified candidate for ballots.
i might not agree with them much on things in that sphere, but i still want their votes to count.

I've mentioned how uncomfortable it is listening to our various neighbors conducting their business calls in the back yard because cell phone coverage around here is so terrible.
Today was a great example of, "Calls you should never make outdoors": I just got to listen to new neighbor fire someone with cause, so no severance pay nor unemployment. Which is NOT a conversation you should be having in a public place.

If I have, I have forgotten. It's been a while.

Drejk wrote:For some reason Facebook decided to show me GothBard among the people "you may know" right now. That is utterly astonishing... I knew she had a Facebook account, but I was under the impression it had been near-dormant for many moons.
So was I, that's why I was surprised that her account popped up on my feed as a suggestion out of nowhere.
On the other hand, that's kind-a typical Facebook behavior, showing you "people you might know" from time to time, often people who showed it to you before.
At least with GothBard I do have two shared facebook contacts, unlike some other suggestion I was given from time to time totally out of the blue.

Well, for those of you who know what I look like, imagine I had a much thinner, cooler, prettier older sister. With a completely different facial structure.
Like Susannah Hoffs and Joan Jett had a love child.
As one of very few people here who has physically met both of you...

The family i pads and phones have speakers that either because of the way they're facing or just my weird hearing, sound like nails on a chalkboard made by spiders skittering around. Or one of those ASMR videos that makes me want to smash the computer with a sledge hammer.
It cuts right through the walls. They will not understand that "not loud to you" is not the same as "not loud". Mom didn't believe I could even hear it till she tried turning it on at random.

It would likely have helped if LM's phone didn't autocorrect the name.

I swear... I constantly harp on the importance of clear, complete, thorough communication.
And when even that fails, I'm left wondering, "What the heck else can I do?"
At Impus Major's request, every year on my birthday I'm supposed to take the kids out on an all-day "Daddy History Day" trip where we walk through my life. Last year we got from birth through elementary school, and both kids talked about how much they enjoyed it.
So this year I planned two days for it. I told the kids to plan two days for it. We were all set to do it June 20-21, but Impus Minor ended up in summer school and having other issues and we postponed it to this week.
So all week I've been saying, "Don't make plans on Thursday. We're going to be gone all day on Thursday. You will not have any free time on Thursday because we're going to be gone all day."
Yesterday: "We're going to be gone all day tomorrow. Do not make social plans. Do not plan for anything else."
This morning:
Impus Minor: What?!?!? We're doing it all day?!?!? I don't have time for that! I thought we were only going to do it for an hour or two!
*SIGH*
And the biggest issue? The whole point of this is that I'm doing it for the kids, and even Impus Minor admitted that he really enjoyed last year, so the last thing I want to do is punish him and make him hate the idea.
So, we're going to have a short day. *SIGH*. Hopefully I'll manage to give them my whole life's history before it ends, but at this rate it's definitely a race...

So in the strange new space that is the free time I've begun to have over the last few months, with the help of an "enthusiast grade" desktop that a friend gave me from 2018 (it was abandoned at his place by one of his former friends/coworkers who was trying to shelter assets in the run-up to him being caught on the lam by the IRS... long story that I'm not even fully aware of) I've finally gotten into a game that I have been dying to have the free time for: FFXIV
I played during the closed beta years and years ago for ARR and fell in love with it then even on my work computer which ran that at sub 30 FPS. Now that I have a good computer, probably what most would consider a great one but not top of the line (the thing apparently would have cost about 4000-ish to build back in 2018, all brand new, from the parts research I did) I finally just invested in it. Been playing with my brother and began just before the latest expansion and despite being way behind where the vast majority of players are in terms of what content I'm doing there is still an insane amount of content to dive into and surprisingly I've rarely had even to wait a long time for queues since SE was wise enough to provide incentives for even max level toons to do lower level stuff through roulettes.
It's a freaking blast and hands down the most fun I've had in an MMO ever (and I wasted nearly a decade on WoW back in the day being a no-lifer Raid leader). Rolled up as a Dragoon to start and got to around 80 before deciding to dip my toes back into my old healer niche, now I balance DRG with Sage which has the best "gamefeel" as far as healing goes, to me.
The only thing that really gets under my skin about it in general is that I'm not very good at making Gil yet so my crafting is lagging way further behind than I'd like, but that is what it is.
I know a few of you here said over the years that XIV is an on-again-off-again addiction. I'm doubtful that you're on the same Data Center, let alone Server but if you are and ever feel like kicking around even for roulettes hit me up with a DM. I hesitated posting about it here as it's... kind of weird for me to mix social groups and hobbies but after sticking to it for the past 60 days and it still being fun I figured, hell, why not.

Orthos and I have both posted our toons publicly here, but to save you search-fu I'm "Rich Auntie Malena", aka Malena Duskwind on Crystal/Brynhildr. The "whole" guild is back in-game (Hi, Shiro, and GothBard), and we've become "sister guilds" with another guild for our 8-person instances, but honestly we don't do a ton of social stuff. We tend to come in, do the 70/80/90 hunts and society quests, Wondrous Tails, and chase the main story quest at the moment. But if you'd rather try a 4-person with humans instead of bots, just let us know. The *biggest* improvement to FFXIV over the years has been allowing you to do almost all duties with bots so if you're anti-social like I am you never have to deal with other players. But the "new" post-COVID player base is so d**ned sweet that I've started socializing with many of them in spite of myself. One of the best player bases I've ever encountered.
EDIT: FTR, I main any tank, but I've fallen in love with Reaper for DPS. I can play Sage if a group desperately needs a healer, but it's not a great idea...

NobodysHome |

Speaking of Dragoon and the player base, Hi told a "nice" story about the "during COVID" player base. Hi, being Hi, had leveled up Dragoon using levees and fates, never once doing the job quests. Apparently most, if not all, of a Dragoon's AoE attacks come from those quests. So he started doing a 4-person dungeon with 3 randos and after the first fight they asked, "Why aren't you doing your AoE attacks?"
"What AoE attacks?"
"The ones you get from your job quests."
"Oh, I don't have those."
And the other three immediately voted to kick him from the group.
These days it's more likely the other three would carry you, then say, "Now PLEASE go do your job quests. You owe it to other players to play nice."

Sad noises @ Crystal, I'm on Primal/Leviathan, and given the renaissance that game is undergoing transfers to anything except Dynamis a no-go. What you mentioned about the Job quests though... yeah, I am personally guilty of that too, I haven't bothered to do my last two Job quests yet despite missing out on the abilities... I should really get around to that soon.
The fact that they went with OWA from 7 instead of Laughing Mad from 6 by itself has me cackling as if 6 is even that much older. Not to put Megalovania down or anything, Toby Fox put in SERIOUS work in his game but I can't help but wonder how many sleepless nights the insane stanbase caused him after the passion project went so super viral even the Pope was forced to at least learn about it.

OK. Maybe Vanykrye can explain the technical details of this.
I personally like two-factor authentication. However, I give them my land line and tell them to call me. In the last few months, this has stopped working; I hit "Call Me" and nothing happens.
So what's the difference between calling a land line and calling a cell phone whereby an automated system could call one but not the other?

In the past, I have had a similar but opposite problem.
A company that used your phone number as the "customer rewards program ID" would reject my Google Voice number as 'invalid'.
The amusing thing was that I had used that number during beta testing of the program, but once it rolled out to the general public, I couldn't use it any more.
Somehow they distinguished between land lines, cell phones, and Google Voice.

I suspect it's the difference between Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) and "classic" cellular transmission -- modern land lines and Google Voice are both VOIP, while cell phones use a different network.
To a human, you can't tell the difference: Dial a number, get a person at the other end.
For some reason, an autodialer can tell, and I have no idea why, which is why I'm hoping this is somewhere within Vanykrye's scope of knowledge.
