Ah, Christmas morning and the things you learn:
Impus Minor, instead of his usual, "It's a holiday, I'm staying in bed 'til 1:00 pm!", got up with me at 5:15 am.
I couldn't find my stocking last night, so I just figured no one would notice and put up the other three. The first thing Impus Minor said on entering the living room: "Dad, where's your stocking? Don't you get one this year?"
Sometimes my kids are so sweet!
I forced Impus Minor to stay quiet until 7:00 am, at which point he...
...woke Impus Major, turned off the Christmas carols, and put on The Simpsons.
It's... an interesting Christmas, to say the least!
I miss those days.
Still, I ended up getting up last this morning at 7:45, about 30-45 minutes earlier than my usual.

The Vagrant Erudite wrote:I still like grits...If a book sucks so much that you have to try multiple times over the course of decades to read it, it just sucks. There's no but in that situation. Literature shouldn't be a burden. It should be entertainment, not a job.
It's like grits. If you need to cover them with cheese, or sugar, or whatever the hell you throw in it to make it even kind of palatable, it's not a good food. You don't like grits. You like all the s&!~ you throw on grits.
The Silmarillion (no, you don't deserve italics) is a piece of wretched dog s@&$. It's the worst piece of garbage I've ever even partially slogged through, and I was assigned Nicholas and Alexandra for a middle school gifted reading class, and boy oh boy, was that a major pile of excrement. It's a horrible historical drama about the last Czar of Russia's hemophiliac son, and you'd think that could be made into something slightly enjoyable, but it was not even close. I literally took a D in a class I otherwise had an A in because our reports were like 30% of our grade, and I refused to finish that regurgitated grit meal. ...and it was better than The Silmarillion. (This was the same class that assigned me Ender's Game, one of the best books I've read to date, though the movie is...just...so bad...)
If it didn't have the name Tolkien on the cover, it wouldn't even be paperback fodder sitting in the back of an airport duty-free shop, let alone a name most of us recognize.
I HATE GRITS!
(UNLESS they are from waffle house)

Yeah that's sweet of your kids. Do you have plans for Christmas day? Parteh?
LOL. What Christmas is like when you turn 50:
In short, no parties, but a very, very busy day.

However, Impus Major's desktop is now 10 years old, has caught fire twice (quite literally -- the video cards overheated and burst into flames), and he asked for a "gaming laptop" for Christmas. I wanted nothing whatsoever to do with it, so NobodysWife did all the research balancing price, performance, portability, and longevity, finally deciding on a really sweet MSI number.
Impus Major opened it, promptly complained about how heavy it is (the thing is wafer-thin, so I have no idea what the heck he's talking about), then complained that the bumps on the home row keys weren't prominent enough.
NobodysWife: Well, I'm sorry you don't like it, but at least it's better than the present YOU got ME!!
Watching Impus Major's face as realization dawned that not only was he whining about a fricking NEW LAPTOP, but he'd forgotten to get her anything for Christmas was... priceless!
This morning, NobodysWife and Impus Major are both "enjoying" bowls of Christmas Crunch.
Who eats that stuff?

Thought exercise for DMs and world builders.
Man I need to look at this when I can.

*shrug* I'm not here to convince you. You can have any opinion you want. I'm simply sharing mine. As I have said in previous comments about other subjects; most people just dig in opinions when presented with commentary otherwise, anyway, on most issues.
But, as you said, many people dislike the movie who love the book. I'm not the only one who notices these things. If you thought those facial expressions acutely displayed the depth conveyed in the book, well, I guess you and I have different opinions on exactly how deep those emotions were.
You can't convey the entirety of "I have to do this to survive. You don't understand. If I don't come at him with absolutely everything I have, he and his cronies will retaliate - the only way to stop this, to end this, is to put him down so hard, so viciously that he, and his friends watching, will be terrified at the thought of confronting me again; I don't want to do this, but I have to" in a grimace or a wince.
Hell, that was pretty much one of the defining themes of the novel - that when you fight an enemy you have to hit hard, hit fast, and hit with everything you have before they can counter-attack, because when it comes to life you must be ruthless - and I don't remember it being really a present theme of the movie. But, then again, I saw the movie a long time ago, didn't like it particularly, and didn't choose to commit a ton of it to memory. I don't go around intentionally memorizing movies I dislike. If I hate them maybe, but this was so "meh" that it just didn't stick to my mind.
Like it or not, if you know anything of depth about the positions of the religion, they're scattered throughout the later books in the Shadow series. I don't want to get in too much depth for fear of flaming bikes, but they're there - especially when it comes to positions on reproduction, spreading humanity, and the like. It's not blatantly for the church itself so much as it is their dogma. Dude is an elder of the church you know, and it's no coincidence he got...
1) Enchanted was a fun book by him
2) Children of Earth is a series that is simultaneously super-Mormon and not; it's weird, but still enjoyable3) I've enjoyed lots of his short stories
4) I've never read EG; I enjoyed the film, but it wasn't particularly spectacular as far as film experiences go

To us, ZAXBY's is like, "not quite as good CfA" - but that's an understandable taste variance.

I prefer Zaxbys, but that's more due to preferring their variety of recepies.
CfA has the better fries tho.

The brother did Xmas dinner, and did a very fine job. After that, we (parents, brother and sister-in-law) took doggo and tiny nephew to the beach, where they both ran about like lunatics. Tiny nephew pretended to be a shark, but he does that anyway.
Just finished playing various folk tunes and '60s rock songs with Pops Longears, him on 'cello, me on guitar.
My presents consisted of cheese, crackers, beers, hat. I am wearing the hat and just about to drink one of the beers.

Chik-Fil-A is awful. Bad experience with pickles. Never going back.

Aiymi and I have spent the weekend (and today) being sick. We were supposed to drive over to my mother's house, but that was a non-starter today.
This was me this past weekend as well, so my sympathies there. I'm still not 100% but it was enough for me to get out for a while, but I am back home now and in the comforting embrace of DayQuil.

I am WINNING with the Mother-in-Law this Christmas week.
We're on day five of her visit, and she has not complained about ANYTHING. Not one thing.
Best of all, I have finally succeeded in making food that not only honors all of her food sensitivities (she cannot have gluten, yeast, sugar or any cane derivatives, black pepper, or chocolate without getting migraines, and very little dairy), but makes her HAPPY. I didn't know this was possible.
I managed to make gluten-free, sugar-free waffles for breakfast this morning that she loved and even asked for seconds of (the rest of us had normal waffles), made a special gluten-free bread just to make the croutons for stuffing that she could eat with the turkey (again, there was also normal stuffing for everyone else), and baked a special batch of gluten, dairy, and sugar free pecan-cherry-carob brownies to put in her stocking.
At this point, I would have to messily shag a bison in front of her to get out of her good graces.
After over twenty years of uneasy detente, this is a fine thing.

That's a lot of extra work required. *salutes Lisamarlene in admiration*
For sugar free I know there are sugar substitutes, but for yeast and gluten I wouldn't know where to start.
