Surprisingly, they didn't take half of the books, despite many of them being in good condition. I think they had more than enough of those books and they weren't selling so they didn't want anymore, though I didn't actually look. There's apparently a long list of criteria that can get one thrown out.
I put them in the "free books!" boxes outside the store. Maybe someone'll get lucky and find something they want.

So I've been given large amounts of Oxycodone to combat some of the serious pain of whatever is wrong with me. They are trying to give me some relief until they have a better idea of whats happening.
It's nice, this is the first time I've been without serious pain in some time, and there doesn't seem to be any side effects.
Oh! What's that!? *leaves thread to go chase purple butterflies*

Sucks to hear, man. I've been on that stuff, right after surgery when I had my wisdom teeth out. I don't like what it does to my head. Thankfully I've never been on it longer than a week.
Yeah and apparently it is horribly addictive if taken for any real length of time, still it's letting me do things like take a decently long walk without feeling like vomiting from the pain so I'm appreciating it.

Also, I never realized just how game-breaking Gau can be in the early part of FF6 if you know what you're doing with Rages and take the time to track down the nicer ones.
I can't believe you didn't know that. I personally think it's so the fight with Ultros in the Operahouse goes well if you didn't level everyone appropriately(Ultros can kill everyone at that point in the game), but Gau is a true beast(LOL). My friend cracks him out every game to give him the Merit Award(may have changed in later version) so he can have the fight ability and then truly turn the game on its' head.

Gau is so ridiculously easy to use it's disgusting.
Just toss him in the Veldt.
When he shows up and tries to rejoin the party, smack him and he'll run off.
Keep doing this until you've level grinded in the Veldt for a bit. When you're ready, unsmack Gau and he'll rejoin your party with a stupifying amount of techniques. The "Swing" attack from Brachiosaurus remains a favorite.

Yeah Gau just one-shotted the Opera House Ultros with an Aspik GigaVolt. Boom.
Having a guide to say "these are the monsters you need to fight here, then go find them and Leap on them to get their Rages before going to the next part" really helps. (Also to explain exactly how Leap actually works - the in-game description is a tad misleading, implying that Gau learns the abilities of every creature you encounter and defeat while he is gone, when actually it's only the group he Leaped onto and the group he returns after. Sadly, Freehold, your advice doesn't work.)
And yeah, I have seen more than one reference to the "Wind God Gau" trick that requires the Merit Award, but I haven't gotten to the place the relic drops so it hasn't explained it in detail yet. I just got to Vector.
Lete River's good for building levels, but Gau's level is really much less important than his repertoire of abilities. If all he has is the default stuff, he never amounts to much, and you're better off having Sabin or Edgar in the party (whichever one you weren't taking already, because you're locked into Locke and Celes for this trip and Cyan's useless in the Magitek Factory). But if he's got some of the more powerful attacks (Aspik, Anguiform, Marshall, Pterodon, Slamdancer, HadesGigas, etc. - anything that gives him a multi-target magical effect) he tears things apart.
Honestly the main pain is making sure you encounter things that are easy to miss - like certain encounters on the Train - so they'll show up in the Veldt, and dealing with the fact that some of the best Rages (Aspik, Marshall, Slamdancer) are really rare encounters on the Veldt. I spent so much time trying to find Marshall it wasn't funny, missing him the first time because Gau had Leaped already and hadn't yet come back, the second time because I accidentally forgot I didn't have him yet (I was searching for something else at the time) and only realized "OH I NEEDED THAT GUY'S RAGE" just after I killed him.

@ Orthos - Is this your first time playing FF VI? It's my second favourite FF, after VII, so good to see (hear/read?) someone enjoying it. :) Never knew that about Gau either, played the whole game without using him. Never real took to his character. Also didn't help that I didn't have a guide. :P
Speaking of guides, I find myself using guides a lot more these days than I would have when I was younger. Possibly a reflection of having less time to commit to games, and figuring things out myself.

Hah, no, far from it. =) VI is actually my favorite FF period, followed by IX, then V and IV, and is only second to Chrono Trigger in being my favorite game ever. I've played it many times before.
This is just the first time I've played it with actually knowing what to do with Gau, rather than just sticking him somewhere I wouldn't have to ever use him for the entire game. It's changed him from a character who I pretty much couldn't stand to one of my most efficient party members (really at this point only second to Edgar, Terra, and Celes, and in some cases beating even them).
And 100% with you on the guides thing. That and there's so many hidden things in the game that I always missed out on - items in pots/boxes/etc. - that I never knew of before looking at one.
