At a certain age, you start getting really depressed at the general stupidity of humanity, and start to realize just how deep those depths go.
Last night on the freeway in Albany, a guy started racing another guy. In the pouring rain. At 2:00 am. While drunk.
I am rather surprised no one is dead this morning.
But the pictures of his burnt-out vehicle are yet one more indicator that luck favors the stupid.

Oh, and speaking of pet peeves, the number of advertisements that start off with, "Your xxx doesn't want you to know about this!"
I understand the underlying psychology. I studied the psychology of advertising and know that getting something that is "exclusive" or "secret" is a huge psychological trigger for a lot of people.
But...
Excuse me? The insurance company expects my doctor to see 24 patients a day, 6 days a week. The last thing she wants is more visits. I'm lucky to set up an appointment 2 months in advance! The notion that my doctor is trying to negatively impact my health for profit is so evil in so many ways, I consider it the vilest of the vile. Because it builds mistrust between medical professionals and the people they served. And yeah, that mistrust killed my father. So there's a personal stake in it as well.
Yeah, I listen to the radio. The assumption among advertisers is that anyone listening to the radio these days is too poor to pay $6/month for a streaming service, so most of the ads are focused on payday loans and loan forgiveness.
But you know what? Credit card companies are all about profit. and a 10% repayment is more than a 0% repayment! They are perfectly happy to have to go to a loan forgiveness specialist. In fact, if you call a credit card company about not being able to pay, they may refer you to one!!!.
I've never seen a credit card company that thought, "Yeah, let's just nail this sucker to the wall, send him to jail, and write off the whole thing as a loss."
They'd much rather squeezes as much as they can out of you, even if it's only 5-10% of the original loan, wreck your credit score so they don't make the mistake of loaning to you again, and move on.
Same exact thing. Getting something is better than getting nothing, so having a professional work out a payment plan whereby they can recoup some of their losses instead of throwing you in jail is a win-win for everyone.
Anyway, rant over.

Mouseketeer Role Call: (Or at least FaWtL):
Looks like our plans have shifted quite a bit from my original thoughts, because First Class Eurail tickets are stupid-cheap. ($42/day for unlimited travel in Europe in First Class? Seriously?!?!?)
So here's the tentative plan:
From July 6-28, we'll be hitting:
- London
- Edinburgh
- Paris
- Amsterdam
- Copenhagen
- Malmo, just to say we made it to Sweden and ride the train through the cool bridge/tunnel (brunnel?)
Are we getting closer to any FaWtLers who want to try to meet up with us for a "day tour" of one of those cities?
(Unfortunately, it's been over 30 years since I was fluent in German, and 20 years since I've even tried to mangle French, so I think we're going to be an "English-only/Google Translate" group, though after 4 years of it Impus Major really ought to be able to get us by in the many Spanish-speaking nations we're visiting.
Oh, whoops...

Not really, just serving salmon is pretty bad.

Cover Turtle! Go get some drowsy cold medicine! At least that type seems more effective. And sleeping is probably how you should spend your time while you're sick.
Basically what I've been doing this weekend.
Sleeping 10 hours (a day), drowning myself in tea'n'booze and been reading up on my huge stack of Rpg systems.*coughs and blows nose*
Also I used Cover Turtle's whip on my BF. He ran (if slowly) the 2.4 km, but bit me after. I'll take the bites.
*Wiggles eyebrow and shakes his turtle butt at Mort*
That was the easiest lane but I couldn't get to the top.

Those are some hideously mesmerizing pants...
Whole wheat spaghetti does taste a bit odd. Just different I suppose.
Yup! Blegh! It tastes kind of...stale or flat?
Anyone else ever work with someone then they find out you play D&D and they invite themselves to your game? (He's totally not joining my game btw.)
Yup I did. Invited him into one of the gaming groups I participated in...didn't work out for several different reasons, mostly differing gaming styles and expectations.

As an outsider, with an imperfect grasp of American politics, I see several problems
-> The equation of an actual ("historical") extremist group(s) with fairly established view on several reactionary (political) positions...with well more of a bunch of generalized, though at times annoyingly vague, idea(s) that seem to touch upon such things as socially progressive political positions, activism and political correctness.
-> The need for an actual political position besides the current perceived left><Right positions given above.
-> That the general tone (and amount of hyperbole) makes even the basest of communication between people on each side of the divide incredibly difficult.
If a situation can only be put forth in the most extreme, black'n'white, "with us or against us" or confrontational way as possible, it doesn't exactly engender understanding or willingness to compromise in whoever you're trying to sway…
I'll add that such attempt at such verbal browbeating will at best entrench people in their existing preconceptions and at worst it'll leave them feeling ostracized (and consequently fleeing) from your particular brand of politics.

I'm scared of heights too. But you're hooked to a safety harness, so you're fine(or at least if you remember to kick the wall a few times so you don't bump into rocks on the way down). Besides you're looking up all the time to figure out where's the nearest handhold, you don't have time to look down.

Yay Cover Turtle is feeling better!
My take on it:
Voting is taken by people as a Sport?! My Family always votes Republicans, for generations, so I must too!
Seats are not given in proper proportion to population. Wyoming is a rural, rather unpopulated state and they get 2 seats?
What NH said: If Democrats propose something, as Republicans we need to find a way to stop it. Rather then - maybe there are other ways to implement that said thing out? Or its a good thing, let's do it!

That being said it's Chinese New Year and we're having hotpot, a Popiah Party on the second day of Lunar New Year, and I'll be making Osmanthus jelly dessert. Suffice to say my paws will be full and probably minimal or no posting until after 6th February.

I did think she might be more appropriate as a ghost that came back from the dead for duty, but incorporeal makes it hard to grab stuff. Again, there's telekinesis that ghosts get. Maybe a sorcerer level for mage hand at will so she can grab a hairbrush and spank misbehaving kid royals.

Mort the bird rescue cat…
I found a little bird near my office
On advice of acres wildlife rescue, I put it back on the nearest tree branch
(They asked me if I was comfortable handling the bird in question, seeing it’s just a small one – so the claws and beak would probably do minimal damage, I said yes)
Now I know that I should NOT be able to get so near to a bird to take photographs without the bird panicking and flying off, so I suspected that the bird for some reason, cannot fly. Turns out it’s a fledgling. So I did get to touch a small bird today.
At first I actually thought it was a fake ornamental bird that someone put on the barrier to decorate for Chinese New Year until it started cheeping.

Ghost would have hard time pretending to be a living person.
And it wasn't sense of chaperoning duty that made her undead (well, if you want it to be so if you use her, feel free), it's merely her motivation.| Drejk |

You haven't meet local pigeons then. They will completely ignore you, unless you seem to have bread, seeds, that kind of things.
If you go to main square the pigeons will bluntly demand that you feed them, going as far as check your pockets, walk over your feet, and land on you (all actually happened to me) with blatant disregard for you, or even attempts to shake them off.

There are also people, mostly cynical independents, who view politics as a team sport. And to be fair, if you ignore what the various positions and goals of the two big parties and just focus on how they operate, it does look that way. Which the worst of the bad guys love, because if everything is just Red Team v Blue Team, their evil is just part of the game. Of course both-side-ism is a fallacy; regardless of where your opinions lie, parties want different things and who wins the game has real consequences for everyone.
Yeah, voters in Wyoming and other small states are over-privileged in federal elections. Which again, the Republicans love, because it's to their advantage. Both the current and previous Republican POTUS have gotten into the White House on the backs of an excitable minority of small-state voters.
And yes, for the Republicans at least, a proposal coming from the Democrats is reason enough to oppose it. Heck, when Obama was elected in 2008, McGonnall straight up said "We're going to make him a one-term president" for no other reason than he's a Democrat. We're seeing the same targeting at the progressive rising star Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, with conservative trolls attacking everything from her simple comments on rental price points in DC to her choice of business attire to a high school dance video.
It's all about slander, obstruct, convince independents that they're as bad as we are so they stay home on voting day, gerrymander ourselves into the far far right corner, use both-side-ism to shift the overton window toward that far far right corner, get people voting Republican out of habit, and if not, suppress their voting rights.

Private messages exist for a reason.
I would say we could start another thread but I actually think all politics are banned on the forum now that I think about it. something like that anyways?
Does that extend to other countries politics that aren't as contentious or that are as well? like I can't talk about brexit either right? Can I still criticize North Korea? Probably best to just avoid them all I suppose but how about barely-related to real world political philosophy?

Not exactly. I had a coworker who found out I played and he strongly hinted for a few weeks that he would like to join. I kept saying that it wasn't a good point in the story for a new player (which wasn't exactly true), but he kept trying to finagle an invite so I eventually cleared it with the rest of the group and brought him in. It went okay, but it didn't last long. Within a few weeks he got fired from the hotel and got a job somewhere else that required him to work during our game time. A few weeks later he got fired from that place, and tried to get me to bring him back in, but we never did.
