Woo hoo!
GothBard is already in her third round of interviews with Big Company that Had Layoffs (she aced one yesterday, has two more today, and one more Monday). She submitted a design test to another company on Thursday, but she'd already resigned herself that she wasn't going to get in because two of her co-workers had already submitted design tests and failed, and she has massive Impostor Syndrome.
Second company followed up this morning with, "Let's do a third-round interview on Friday." Talk about an ego boost for her!
So don't count your chickens and all that, but there's a possibility she's going to have not one but two offers coming in mid-to-late October.
We've backed off our goals and we're hoping for her to be employed by November 1, but it's starting to look like less and less of a pipe dream.

In the meantime, let me just say that my kids are being awesome about this whole thing. They accept that there's a cap on their lunch money each week, and any extra they spend comes out of their allowances. They accept that the family game is going from takeout to home-cooked inexpensive meals like fish tacos or spaghetti. And just a couple of minutes ago, Impus Minor called because he needs a calculator for class, and he didn't want to spend $20 without my permission.
And honestly, the sooner we get into a long-term mindset of spending significantly less, the sooner we can start building up a large enough savings fund that the next time this happens we won't have to sweat it.

I’ve never understood the appeal. When they first came out, they were supposedly hideous but incredibly comfortable, so I got a pair. One of the least comfortable pairs of shoes I’ve ever owned. Got a pair of boots 25 years later. Same thing. My Wolverine steel-toed work boots are an order of magnitude better; the Doc Martens sit in the closet gathering dust because I can’t walk more than a mile or two in them.

I used to wear them all the time, then found out Army surplus boots were just as good, but substantially cheaper. DMs certainly have a bit more style to them, though.

Morning frustration: my hundred year old aunt still lives at home with two of her daughters in Largo, Florida (right in Ian's path). It appears they are NOT evacuating, because with six pets between them, "It's too complicated".
Sometimes I really just want to shake people.
The current projected path also goes right over where TacticsLion lives, but that's far enough inland that it should just be a bad tropical storm by then. Probably.

Having suffered through this myself one too many times, I really feel sorry for Larger Corporation in their pursuit of hiring GothBard. They first interviewed her in August, decided they were interested, got caught up in a reorg, finally got permission to pursue her again, but are still hobbled by the sheer slowness of the process. Her next interview isn't until next week.
On the other hand, a smaller, more agile company contacted her maybe 3 weeks ago, got through two rounds of interviews and a design test, and she's in a third-round interview that may well end up in an offer by the end of this week. (It's kind of odd -- she's meeting with the company co-founder and the VP, which is usually when offers are made, but she hasn't had 1-on-1s with her potential team yet, which is usually the third round, and then the final round isn't so much an interview as the final offer process.)
As always, "You snooze, you lose!", but we've lost SO many candidates to Global Megacorporation's ridiculous processes that I sympathize with any other group that has to go through it. (We interviewed our last hire in early May, and didn't manage to make an offer until early July, which is pathetically slow.)

EDIT: Less facetiously, I think it's a trifecta of human nature:
#1: If none of the previous hurricanes affected me, this one won't either. That's a really common conceit. For example, our house has survived every earthquake since 1929, including the '89 Loma Prieta quake. This doesn't mean it'll survive the next one. But people have a strong tendency to believe that surviving previous events guarantees survival in future ones.
#2: If I lost my house, I might as well lose my life. A.k.a. "The American obsession with stuff." I know a lot of people in California refused to evacuate because they honestly felt that dying was a better choice than losing all their belongings. It's a bizarre attitude, but it's drilled into our heads from birth: "Consume! Consume! Consume! He who dies with the most toys wins!"
#3: If I leave my house, the looters will get my stuff. Our fear culture at its worst. I recall at one of the California fires some firefighters got held at gunpoint because the resident believed they were there to loot his house. Intrinsically related to #2, but with the added, "If I leave someone else will take advantage of me," motive.
Plus just plain old entropy: It's easier not to move.

When it rains, it pours.
MegaSportsBallCompany just followed up with GothBard that yes, they'd be happy to interview her for a senior position in their RPG division. Honestly, it's a stretch because they expect their designers to have fairly strong programming chops, so we'll see how far she gets. But holy carp. As a SportsBall franchise, their salaries are ludicrous -- if she gets in to this one it'd be close to a 40% raise over her previous job.
And she loves her some RPG games, so she'd be an amazing fit for them. She just has to convince them she's worth hiring and teaching to program.
Final rant of the day:
They just announced the first round of fines for "excessive water users". We use between 160 and 220 gallons per day, depending on the season, and that runs us about $65 a month. The fines start once you break 1656 gallons a day, so around 10x our use. Let's assume for the sake of brevity that these users pay 10x as much as I do, so $650 a month.
The fines for excessive use? $60 a month.
Er... when your fines are under 10% of what the person's already paying, they're not going to pay any attention to them whatsoever. What the living heck?
Just heard a youtuber complain that the next "The Fast and the Furious" movie isn't called "fasTEN your Seatbelts", but is "Fast X". I want to know why it isn't "Fast xXx" so that Vin Diesel could cross over with himself.
"Fast X" sounds like some sort of industrial cleaner.

I can already tell it's going to be a looooooooooooong couple of days trying to focus on work for me. Impus Minor's driving test is tomorrow, and while he'll have the requisite 50 hours under his belt and he can pass, there's always the possibility that he'll miss something that results in an auto-fail and we'll have to go back to Eureka. So that's a stressor. (I don't know how it is in other states, but the El Cerrito DMV has a strict, "If you fail to obey any street sign, that's an auto-fail" policy, so people have failed for taking speed bumps too fast, or failing to check their blind spot while pulling away from the curb on an obviously-empty street even after looking at their mirrors for 5-6 seconds.)
And GothBard's "big" interview with her preferred company is tomorrow. Shiro, his visiting friend, and I all think it should be her final interview: She's meeting the Big Kahuna to go over her design document, and presumably if she nails all of his questions and concerns he'll wrap up the call with an offer, but she thinks that even if she passes this call there'll be follow-up calls with her actual future teammates next week. So we'll see about that, too.
Ah, well. Nothing I can do about it. Might as well get back to work.

It's funny, out of all of my aunts and uncles on my father's side, this aunt, at 100, is the last one left. Possibly because she's the only one who isn't even a fraction Polish. But she's outlived all her own siblings (seven of them, I think), too.

Bad: I am in a bind, because it seems that progressing further requires me to kill the Elder to get the key to swamp crypts and iron scraps within. That, however, will progress the threat further and from then on, the random attacks directed at my camp will be trolls instead of hordes of dwarves.
I managed to kill three trolls, but running around the camp and desperately trying to fire arrows at two of them at the same time is not something that I'd be looking forward.
Also, the Elder spawn points are on some faraway islets and I am mediocre sailor at best.

I valiantly resisted buying the knife I mentioned. Twice.
The fact that bus routes were changed because of road works forcing me to go to different shop for groceries helped.
Good: I got the belt.
Bad: I am in a bind, because it seems that progressing further requires me to kill the Elder to get the key to swamp crypts and iron scraps within. That, however, will progress the threat further and from then on, the random attacks directed at my camp will be trolls instead of hordes of dwarves.
I managed to kill three trolls, but running around the camp and desperately trying to fire arrows at two of them at the same time is not something that I'd be looking forward.
Also, the Elder spawn points are on some faraway islets and I am mediocre sailor at best.
Get enough core wood to line the outside of your encampment with spikes. Between the spikes and the palisades, the trolls will take forever to breach your defenses. If you put a raised platform around the interior edge, you can shoot them at your leisure, like shooting fish in a barrel.
It's all very much like building an actual defensible structure. Shiro even went so far as to dig a trench around ours to force invaders to come in from a single direction. Killing them off was casual.
The Elder is probably the hardest boss in the game to kill solo. Let us know if you want a swarm of furriners to come in and help. I know the gang would have a blast killing him again.

Impus Minor and I watched a lot of DMV Test Fail videos last night, and fortunately it gave him a lot more confidence in today's test. All of the fails on the video were obvious, dangerous things like speeding, cutting other drivers off, or failing to check your blind spot. Impus Minor doesn't have any issues with those.
So I'm giving him a 50-50 chance of passing today.
Pros:
- He has the 50 hours of driving experience recommended by the DMV
- He's an intelligent, cautious driver
- His situational awareness has expanded exponentially over the last month
Cons:
- He's driving a stick shift
- There's a tiny chip in the windshield that an Asmodean instructor could call a "crack" and disqualify the car as unsafe before he even tests
- He's timid, which is a negative in California
- His clutch work is only so-so, so he may lose points for revving the engine
- He's unfamiliar with the more arcane traffic laws out there, so the tester could potentially find something he's unfamiliar with. (Just a few days ago I found the good old, "Green light plus green arrow" where you have the right-of-way on a left turn until the green arrow goes away, and then you can still go as long as you yield until the green light is done.) Fortunately, his caution should prevent him from auto-fails in such situations.
But yeah, I'm distracted this morning. I admit it.

Well, the issue is that I can only do that from three sides, the fourth is sticking to the no-build zone of the magic stones. Also, I slowly started expand to one side by making the garden and might have to build around it. Oh, and I might need some extra space for portals. Yes, I know I can disassemble them when not used but then I'll promptly forget the passwords the designation tags and make a mess trying to get back.
The Elder is probably the hardest boss in the game to kill solo. Let us know if you want a swarm of furriners to come in and help. I know the gang would have a blast killing him again.
We'll see how bad it will be when I actually reach it. The biggest issue will be finding the right time to get you visit because of some stupid crap, like time zones and sleep...

EDIT: In spite of the El Cerrito DMV's supposed 63% pass rate, I think of all the kids' friends who've tested there over the years, only one of them passed on the first try. So the expectations are very, very low.

After finishing World II in Valheim they're trying to get back into Fallout 76. Somehow, "Game whose entire focus is accumulating more junk than you can carry and then guilt-tripping you if you try to throw it out," isn't my cup of tea, so I'm still in FFXIV doing dailies and slow progression of other stuff.
But except for tonight, we're typically on from 7-10 Pacific every day except Tuesday and Wednesday, and I've seen you online often enough that I'm sure we have some crossover.
We'll see.
(And yes, Impus Minor is (theoretically) testing right now. As I told him, "The longer your test is, the better, because if you go back to the DMV early it means you really screwed up.")
EDIT: So, no calls from the kids 15 minutes after the scheduled test time desperately telling me Ryan failed, and GothBard hasn't checked in yet, meaning her meeting went over the planned hour, so so far nothing but good signs...

EDIT 3: GothBard's interview was far more nuanced. It was a 90-minute dissection of her design (going 30 minutes over is good), they were noncommittal and said they'd let her know early next week (standard), then she'd go through two more weeks of interviews, including a dissection of her resume and one-on-ones with future team members. So on the one hand getting through all that would be awesome. On the other hand with an offer from another company likely coming up next week, there's the big, "How long can I put off offer #1 to find out whether I get offer #2?"

I don't have patience to give Fallout 76 a try. I loved 1, 2, and even Tactics (mediocre story and NPC interaction but the best combat gameplay of all three) but never got to 3, Vegas, and 4... I have seen sale on Vegas Ultimate today, but didn't felt like getting it (even though it was around $6 on GoG). I might change my mind.
And that 7-10, is 4-7 am for me. I kept trying at stabilizing my daily cycle... And repeatedly fail miserably. I think my body either doesn't respond to regulatory effect or sunlight, or responds too strongly to electric light in comparison to "mere" sunlight.
