Tuesday last week: Get an email from a client that they'll need a virtual server set up for a phone project sometime next month.

Thursday last week: Found out that it needs to be a Debian Linux box. Our company doesn't work with Linux, but Sales asked me to keep entertaining the project rather than reject it outright.

Yesterday we finally were able to have a meeting with the vendor installing the new phone system. Turns out it's two VMs, not one. And they need them by end of day tomorrow, because the implementation is supposed to happen Monday.

Can I get it done? Probably, assuming all the paperwork gets signed and approved today, but I can't do anything until then.

The thing that pisses me off is the client had the implementation timeline but instead of saying "in two weeks" when they initially emailed us, they said "next month". And now I have less than 2 days.

Got it done.

I see there's now a sign outside Freehold's Abscondicave labelled 'Amazon Fulfilment Centre'.

Fact: It would be beneficial for my kiddos to have practice passages for their proofreading skills.
Fact: I will need a ready supply of page-ish long passages for this.

Solution: I guess I have to write a lot of badly-written passages.
Better solution: googles recipe blogs

You could probably also use various fanfics.
The day I hand out a worksheet with the phrase "stared into Sonic's eyes" is the day I get politely but firmly asked to stop teaching.

How about "stared into Knuckle's eyes"?

Or, just don't use self-insert erotic Sonic fanfics. I'm assuming that if you look hard enough you can find other kinds. Maybe.

I'm working on a project with a 6-month timeline and a possible trip to southern California this summer. From a tech standpoint the trip is completely unnecessary, but it will give the the warm fuzzies that we care.

This is not something I would have had the opportunity to do at my old company.

At least you didn’t say, “And while I’m there maybe I’ll grab dinner with NobodysHome.”

If you think Europeans get exasperated with ‘Merikuns geography skills (or lack thereof), try living in the same country with them and having them equate a quick jaunt from NYC to Philly (around 90 miles, and a bit over 2 hours with traffic) with a “quick jaunt” from S.F. to L.A. (around 400 miles, or roughly 6.5 hours).

I’m sociable enough to do a rare 90-mile drive to see someone. 400 miles? Nope.

Over at ALL (DE)'s. The evenings activities consisted of drawing 'Five Nights At Freddy's' characters with Shanna, eating spaghetti, then rehearsing 'My Baby Just Cares For Me' and 'Moon River' for a wedding we have to play at in the summer.

First full week is done! Because I put in an additional 3 days last week of intensive boulder drilling I was the only person at the shop this morning who wasn't complaining about being sore.

In fact I'm starting to suspect people aren't as enthusiastic about work in morning as I am.

It probably doesn't help that we went from 65 and sunny on Wednesday to 40 and windy on Friday. That's bound to put a dent in morale.

Oh, yeah definitely you should just pop down. I mean, it's going to be around the Woodland Hills-Van Nuys area so it's not like you'd have to ACTUALLY drive through LA. It's just like an hour from your door!

/Sarcasm.

No, I simply don't tend to see anyone socially when I'm on a work trip. I still intend on doing a huge road trip (roughly 5500 miles for the shorter version) though, and in that trip if the timing works out I'd be going to you.

Thus continuing my undefeated streak of forgetting every holiday except birthdays and our anniversary since the pandemic began.

Former Coworker and I are teaming up on our current job because it's pretty big. We got back to the shop yesterday and everyone else was already pretty much done and chilling out at the shop.

Other Captain (super excited): Yeah, I had to drive an hour, put some stuff in a pond and then drive an hour back and that was my day!

Former Coworker (equally excited): We drove an hour and removed a fifty foot wall, which was supposed to take a full day, in two hours!

I wonder which crew gets regular raises and which one complains about not getting paid enough.

3 people marked this as a favorite.

Yup, it's Easter. I've got a loaf of sourdough rye raising, the babka dough raising, I'm about to start on the pierogi, and I've got two pounds of kielbasa and kapusta and a butter lamb out in the garage. Also a ham, because my MiL is too anglo for the good stuff. And some asparagus, because there has to be one dish on the table that gives a nod to a fourth food group.

The problem is, most Polish-American holiday menus assume you will have no fewer than a dozen people at the table, and you scale it up from there (when I was growing up, it was at least twice that just for aunts and uncles and cousins, more if they brought friends). Not five.

Which is why I'm not making a baranek as well.

Now I wonder what Polish-Americans mean by baranek...

You are wiser than you know.

Impus Major set up a dummy M$ account for his gaming laptop. So, trying to make the desktop match the laptop, I used the same account...
...EXCEPT...
...if you install Windows 10 using an M$ account, it automatically enables OneDrive (Microsoft's version of Google Drive) and auto-links your Documents folder to it.

Considering that Impus Major's My Documents folder is 78 GB, and OneDrive has a 5 GB limit before you start having to pay for it, this was totally unacceptable.

And once you've created an account with OneDrive enabled, there is NO way to disable it and move your My Documents folder to a better location. (We have the standard, "500 GB SSD for the OS, 8 TB SATA for programs and data", so his My Documents folder belongs on the 8 TB drive. Once OneDrive comes along, you CANNOT move My Documents.)

So I removed the account, uninstalled OneDrive, and re-created the account.

And Windows re-installed OneDrive and once again started uploading Impus Major's data to its cloud.

There's no opting out of it. There's no turning it off. If you install Windows 10 with an M$ account, M$ steals all your data and puts it on the cloud.

So my final attempt was to remove the account, uninstall OneDrive, start creating the account, and then unplug the network cable while it was trying to set up the local account.

THAT finally worked.

So quite literally, if you don't physically remove the network connection, you can't install Windows 10 using a Microsoft account without Microsoft uploading all your data to their cloud.

It's appalling.

GB: What kind of mom do you want?
IM: A homeless one

I don't use My Documents folder (aside of all those sh***y programs that default their save locations there and I have forgotten/was unable to change their default location) for my files in the first place. I have been keeping my own things (like rulebook pdfs) in their dedicated folders on non-system partitions since around the middle of nineties when we got a hard drive for our Amiga.

We went to an old stately home that has become a council-run park and whathaveyou today. There was an Alice In Wonderland themed trail in the woods that the kids enjoyed; Sonic also fell off his scooter. He's OK, but we did get fouled soccer-player style histrionics for some time afterwards.

I was also supposed to be seeing Kruangbin tonight, but since there are no trains due to a) engineering works and b) a strike, I can't, since I wouldn't be able to get home afterwards. My own stupid fault for not being able to drive.

For many years I did my utmost not to use it. But then the kids put their files everywhere; it was impossible to move them from one computer to another. Add to that that any reasonable backup solution asks, "OK, which folders would you like to back up?" and you end up in a morass of chaos, and I gave up, move the My Documents folder to the D: drive, and tell them to have at.

Living in Albany is funny.

We will never make a "top 10 safest places to live" list, nor possibly even a top 100.

But over 80% of our crime is property crime on unattended, unlocked property. Of the other 20%, virtually all of the assaults and fights occur either just outside bars (go figure), on the path under the BART track, or between people who know each other.

So our crime rate is terrible. But you can safely walk through town any time of the day or night as long as you stay off the BART path, and if you lock your car and close your gate property crime is virtually nonexistent.

Statistics vs. reality is an interesting study...

OK. Now there's a "weird parenting thing I don't get".

By the time Impus Minor was 6 (so Impus Major was 9), we started leaving the kids alone in the house for brief periods (15-20 minutes) to get them used to the idea. As they got older, we went away for longer and longer. By the time Impus Minor was 12, we were gone for 6-7 hours every Sunday, and the year after that we spent an overnight without them and they had to order their own food. There's never been an issue, and they know to get the neighbors in any kind of emergency.

At this point, if three of us wanted to go on a two-week trip and one of the kids wanted to stay home, I wouldn't think twice about it.

Well, apparently this is Yet Another Difference in Parenting.

We just got a call from a fellow parent who's going out of town for four nights and leaving his 17-year-old at home. And he honestly wanted us to let the 17-year-old move into our house for 4 nights because he doesn't trust him on his own. "He might have a party, or his friends might come over and spend the night, or..."

If you have no faith in your 17-year-old's judgement to be on their own for four nights, you really need to start working hard to teach them independence and responsibility, or else when they move out to go to college they're a train wreck waiting to happen...

My parents left us alone for the full workday during the summers starting around age 12 for me, 10 for my brother. But we were always left with a to-do list and punished if it wasn't all done by the time the parents came home.

So I got all that done by 1:30, showered, started a load of laundry, and left to go do a field trip for my naturalist course.
Now I'm home and Hermione and I still need to finish assembling our fascinators to wear with our Easter dresses, and I need to make dinner, and all I want to do is to make myself a drink and beg WW to set up the hammock in the side yard, because I'm tired out.

The babka sure looks pretty, though.

"So, you haven't socialized with us for over 15 years now, and you're going to call us out of the blue to ask us to baby-sit your nearly adult son? Well, here's what you can do..."

Ok... won't go there, but it wasn't a polite statement. It had to do with what they could do with the pizza they offered to buy us in exchange for 4 days of baby-sitting. A near-adult.

I have 7 brothers and after high school I moved in with 3 of my friends and then I moved in with my future wife.

So this concept of four days alone is unknown to me, though it does sound wonderful!

That said, at 17 I absolutely would have had a party. Regardless of how much trust a parent has in you 17 is still 17 and I was pretty stupid at 17.
