Well, Impus Major is getting a box that puts all other boxes in any of our houses to shame, but he blew both his and GothBard's April birthday budgets doing it, so he's going to have a pretty boring 21st birthday. (Except of course GothBard is taking him out karaoke singing all night, so sounds like they'll have a cheap and fun evening anyway.)
But yeah, he's getting an Intel i9 12900 with 32 GB of DDR5 and an NVIDIA RTX3060 with 12 GB of video RAM, all run off an SSD.
I'm making the rash assumption it'll be somewhat fast.

I am calling dibs on it, if he let it stay unused for longer than three days.

I inherited Shiro's circa-2016 God Box (minus the hard drives). Installed Windows 10 Pro with my own hard drives.
Everything works fine except the video card (NVIDIA GTX 970) won't wake from sleep.
So yeah, I put the computer to sleep, wake it up later, and it's alive and running but the monitors won't turn on.
I've done all the obvious things:
- Turn the monitors off and on again
- Unplug and re-plug the monitor cables
- Disable hibernationI'm trying two more things I found on the interwebs:
- Set PCI Express power management to off
- Enable Intel QuickStart in the BIOSOther than, "Buy a new decent video card," can you think of anything else I'm missing?
Holy s@$*. I *think* I know this one.
NVIDIA needs something in order to work, but I forget what. I think you are missing that thing and I think it needs to be kind of prodded awake in the BIOS.
I remember this from my Medival Total War days. Sorta kinda. Unless I'm wrong. In which case, math is to blame, clearly.
Dunno if you got it working yet but my first guess would be the video drivers. I download the Geforce Experience to keep them up to date but you may have to plug into the integrated video card to get a monitor on so you can download the video drivers on the new hard drives you put in.

Nearly killed the Paladin with a leech swarm tonight. He was only saved by Hero's Defiance. The party ran from the swarms, declared that they were taking everything that wasn't nailed down as "payment" and went back to town. Then they argued over whether or not they were going back. At first, all of them were ready to say "f@$# it", but then they saw that a bunch of townsfolk were planning to go to the castle. 2 of the party said "Let'em go. They deserve to die." The paladin and inquisitor tried to convince the townies not to go, but rolled kinda meh. Finally, paladin, warpriest, and barbarian announced that they were going back, and the rogue and inquisitor decided to go as well. They sabotaged the posse to slow them down, and went back armed with lots of salt to kill the leeches. Now they just have to deal with the rest of the crap hiding in there.

Also at game last night, the paladin and rogue both bought Boots of the Cat. We immediately decided that for the paladin's boots to work he also had to wear cat ears and a tail. And that the boots made him say "Uwu nyan" a lot. The rogue also got a pair of cat ears, just because she wanted them, but since she is a ratfolk and is tired of cats chasing her, her boots are just a couple of cats she has tied to her feet. With every step she takes, they meow like the old Meow Mix commercial jingle.

In the Lord of the Rings mythos, there are a number of magic rings. Seven for the dwarves, three for the elves, nine for humans, and one for Sauron. 1, 3, 7, 9. In order to complete the sequence, we would need a group of 5 rings. I propose that this missing set of rings was gifted to a mysterious someone by their true love, along with an assortment of other gifts, including some swans, a group of drummers, some jumping nobleman, and a partridge in a pear tree.

This "job interview" process is really starting to make me laugh -- it's becoming more and more clear that this new Global Megacorporation is more interested in worker drones who care nothing for their own personal time.
The latest?
They've asked me to provide a production-ready technical presentation about one of their products by the 19th.
That's no big deal; every school or job I've ever applied to had a presentation requirement, and they were all exactly the same: "Produce a 10-minute technical presentation."
Global Megacorporation 2 wants a 60-minute presentation. As part of an all-day interview, of course. On one of THEIR products so they can check it for technical accuracy.
The generally accepted paradigm for producing "new" training on a topic you've never seen before is 40:1.
So the latest ask is to spent 40 hours over the next 2 weeks to produce a 1-hour presentation, then skip a day of work to interview.
Shiro put it well: "I think the only people they plan to interview are unemployed. What kind of employed person has the time to deal with all that nonsense?"

Well, that was easy.
(1) Thanks, Scavion, but "update the video drivers" is always task #1 so I'd already done it.
(2) Drejk, Freehold, and Google all pointed me towards the BIOS...
...where there was no PCI express configuration at all.
Suspicious, I went to the motherboard support page. I was running F4 of the BIOS. And there, under F6: "Improved PCI express compatibility".
I updated the BIOS to the latest (F7) and the issue is resolved.
Now my only issue is where to put the giant box Shiro built the system in. I swear, what's wrong with mid-tower ATX cases? (If it wouldn't be 2-3 hours of grueling labor, I'd pull all the components out from his full-sized tower and put them into my old case. He didn't actually use the space in the tower; HE just has space to store it, so why not go big?)

Today in Longears:
* ALL (DE) took the kids to see Sonic The Hedgehog 2, and the children actually got to meet Sonic (i.e. probably a student dressed up in a sweaty nylon costume), which I trust they enjoyed.
* Ma and Pa Longears created a rude puppet of a local politician, then went protestering. They could get 10 years in the nick for this under current legislation, but they haven't got arrested, or if they have, no-one's rung me up and asked me for bail money
* I did some bad construction work, some twin swords practice, some guitar playing, went down t'shops, and played Dragon Age: Origins, so achieved very little. I don't really care.

To be honest, that sounds more like a test in the form of asking you for something unreasonable to check if you will push back against it at all, and if so, how you go about doing so, be it through frustration or a well-reasoned explanation. In other words, it's like a trick question where the only proper reaction is a rejection of the premise.

So, on Friday, Games Workshop released a short video implying that Squats (space dwarves, basically) were finally returning to 40K. I shared it with my gaming group as a couple of the others also used to play 40k back in the day. I captioned the video "I'm sure this is just an April Fool's joke, but it would be a great way to actually do this. Make everything it's just a joke, and then BAM!! Drop a codex and a bunch of new models with no warning whatsoever." On Saturday, Games Workshop released a short video explaining that wasn't a joke. They actually are bringing back Squats (now renamed The Leagues of Votann) later this year. So, even though I was 99% sure it was a joke, I'm still gonna claim "Called it!".

The nice part of putting "Can shave an angry bear with a skid loader" on your resume is if they have a skid loader they want to see if you actually can and then when I show them I can they inevitably say "Well, I'll be!".

Management put a sign up with a list of employees who still need to do online training, and which modules they need to do. I'm not on the list, but it did catch my eye. Several of the people need to do "Module 5: Entering a Guest Room". One of them, however, seems to have a much different type of training to do. Her list is quite short, but includes "Module 5: Entering a Guest." Which is not a service that I thought we provided.

Entirely possible, from what you described. They want people who don't know when they are being taken advantage of.

Yeah, it's funny. The kids already didn't want me getting ANY new job that would result in more stress for me and more work for them. I was leery of the company's hesitation on discussing time off, but employee contact there pointed out that they HAVE to be vague, as time off varies by state. But would it have killed them to be honest and just tell me that?
Finally, GothBard finally recognized that 10% travel means I'd be gone at least one month a year. She didn't like that idea at all.
With the whole family against it, I'll do a final check with my friends in the industry (don't make major life decisions without lots of conversations), then drop out of the running tonight.

I would take half damage, if even that much, from the cold. As wind is my opposing element and I have a true hatred of hail, she and I would probably not get along.
Naturally, I would think she was incredibly attractive, but that's how these things go.

I wouldn't say new, simply just plain ignorant. On every level that I'm able to, I refuse to participate in the corporate cultures or their march to drive humanity to extinction in the name of the almighty dollar.
I could go on at length but that would bump into the no-politics rule, but suffice it to say, I couldn't last very long working for a corp no matter how much money they offer to buy my soul for.

Yeah that makes sense.
Non political TLDR version is that no corporate company wants an employee who will dare to tell them No except in very very specific circumstances of extreme specialization backed up by a Ton of seniority.
A test or trick question like you suggested simply does not exist. They very much intended for NH to do exactly as they asked, and a refusal would be seen as either an admission of incapability or a declaration of insubordination. Either would be a negative on his potential usefulness to the company and lower his chances of employment.

Meh. It was unanimous. 4 tech industry specialists with over 60 years of experience between them, a former navy vet who's now an auditor, and a long-time public utility worker all said, "Yeah, they're jerking you around. Dump 'em."
So I sent the polite, "Please remove me from consideration" about 15 minutes ago.
EDIT: It *IS* kind of funny. Shiro got recruited right out of college, so he's somewhere around a 40-year vet. I'll hit 22 years later this year. And Lara Croft Guy worked on the original Lara Croft, so that's at least another 26 years. GothBard's the "kid" at only 7 years. So that's... wow... 95 years in tech between the four of us!
But Shiro cheats since he makes up almost half the entire total.

I concur with their assessment as well. It just didn't sound like a good fit for you even after subtracting out the bonkers presentation. The presentation parameters were just over the top.

You run into a similar situation with me (19 years), former coworker (30 years), Pops (40 years), and Greg (35 years) when we get together.
