Never been to a gaming or comic con. Martial arts, yes.

So be it.

Was it at the Captain's beach in Wisconsin?

I've been to one comic con, which wasn't up to much, and yes, a bunch of HEMA events too. Slightly more swords and slightly fewer dice than gaming cons, but only slightly.

Good luck FH.

Going to Cons: Doing cosplay, geeking out over much better cosplay. And the panels. My kids and I have gotten to hear Dr. Mae Jemison, Buzz Aldrin, and Nichelle Nichols. There've been others, but those were my favorites. And when you have kids who cosplay, everyone treats them as if they are totally special. The professional cosplayers ask *them* for pictures, which makes them feel awesome. They get to feel like a total rockstar for a day.

I'm not so much for the fawning celebrity bits (okay, except for the time the Ersatz Russian's wife (my boss at the Con) introduced me to David Tennant, and except for the time I met the ENTIRE ORIGINAL HUMAN CAST OF SESAME STREET, PLUS CAROL SPINNEY). I'm not much for the shopping, because I'm waaaay too cheap to spend actual money on anything, and since I almost always have my kids with me, so we tend to focus on what they love. Like, at SVCC, Hermione (who was in 1st grade at the time) spent HOURS hanging out around a robotics club booth where there were six different "life-size" R2D2s, asking questions, because she's madly interested in robotics and thought it was the coolest booth at the entire Con. They got to talk to a NASA pilot who answered ALL of their silly 5- and 7-year-old questions for something like ten minutes, and gave them good answers, I think because he was bored. They got to have lightsaber battles with some local lightsaber club. They got hugs from Gates McFadden. They got their picture taken with some guy who had THE BEST Totoro costume, and who just hung out with them while they petted him and giggled in amazement. (I later found out from the Ersatz Russian's wife it was Adam Savage. I've never watched Mythbusters, but that guy was so totally sweet to my kids, and that's what mattered to me.)

Okay, and for a ten dollar donation to the Michael J Fox Parkinson's foundation, I COULD have sat inside the DeLorean and had my picture taken, but it was late and Val was melting down and I couldn't justify waiting in the line.

Okay, and there was the time while I was working at SVCC that I helped provide security for Stan Lee for five minutes. (There were a whole bunch of us. We made a human barrier so he couldn't be seen or reached by the crowds while his handlers wheeled him quickly behind us toward the least-used exit. It was the end of the day and he was waaaay past exhausted.)

Just had a meeting with the boss that turned into an argument. The fired word was tossed around. This is getting to be too much, even for me.

Spoke to a former supervisor(last person to have this position actually) and they were sympathetic and went on about how much they hate my boss, and how bad working for him can be.

That's it. I'm going to be reaching out to my boss' boss tonight about potential lateral moves. I will be professional, but I dont think I'll be working here much longer.

Big hugs, Freehold.

I was supposed to go to PaizoCon this year. I don't get to cons often, but when I do I like the gaming, and I like to hear from designers, etc. Plus, it's always fun to see Paizo folks.

All the online cons I've been doing this year have been mostly about the gaming, but there have been a few panel discussions that have piqued my interest.

Well, this is getting interesting...

In spite of their, "This will take around 60 days," initial statement, my credit union is proceeding with my refi at lightspeed pace; we already had the appraiser out yesterday and today (a charming old Hispanic gentleman who was just delightful, and told GothBard, "Oh, if I include you in the pictures I can add a lot to the price of the house!"). This morning the "grunt work" guy asked for the final financial docs and I uploaded them all over noon.

So now it's just proving the price of the house and verifying our credit, but I saw our credit scores and... yowza! Getting rid of credit card debt really does make them skyrocket.

Leading to the interesting situation where our refinance might come through before our contractors finally show up. Which is a PITA for tax reasons (the interest on loans used for home improvement are tax-deductible), because instead of first paying them out of the HELOC, then paying off the HELOC with the refi, I'll just be handed thus huge chunk-o-cash I'll have to track religiously in a second account, saying, "See? Every penny of the cash I received went towards home improvement."

Yeah, I'm obsessive-compulsive. I can track all that. But it's still kind of appalling that my "60 day" loan started in late September will come through before my "3 weeks" contractors who were supposed to start August 24.

But if you look at everyone else on FaWtL, I'm really sitting in the catbird's seat in terms of "problems", so I'm not going to complain. Just... "observe"...

In terms of Cons, the *only* reason I go is the shopping for handcrafted stuff you can't find anywhere else. Except... now that there's Etsy, even that isn't true any more.

I don't like crowds, I don't like gaming with strangers, I don't like meeting nor listening to celebrities nor gamers, so... yeah. Not much for me to do. Some of the cosplay is interesting, but surprisingly the cosplay at the cons I've been to has been minimal -- less than 0.1% of all participants I'd guess.

OK. There's *one* more reason I go: Shiro loves to run Call of Cthulu games at Cons. And he's good. He's really, really, really good. So if he invites me to go to a Con so he can run for me and a group of his friends, I'll totally go.

But yeah, Cons aren't a thing for me.

I went to one Con. It was Dragon Con 14. I got a nice shirt for donating blood. I found chrome dice for pretty cheap I still have, and a slightly defective chessex map on clearance.

I hate Atlanta with a passion, though. It smells awful and is hotter than Miami somehow, with the worst traffic ever. You could smell open sewer on the streets waiting in line outside the vendors at the time. It's been a horrible town every time I've had the misfortune of being there; I don't know why I thought the con would be different.

But the crowds were the worst part. I've always been bad with crowds, but my ex wife helped keep me calm. She always had that effect. But even still I spent the whole trip antsy and uncomfortable.

If it weren't so horribly crowded it would have been a positive experience. If. But it was, and thus I never did another.

I don't mind crowds as long as I'm outside, otherwise they exacerbate my mild claustrophobia.

I managed to stay up until 7 pm and woke up sometime before 3 am. Progress?

Yeah I made the mistake of going to dragon con one year cosplaying V from V for vendetta. all black in Atlanta heat with a cloak and a full mask was a terrible idea. They have improved at dealing with the crowds. The host hotels have started doing things to help, but it is still super crowded.

I've never been to a convention, even the local one every February. My friends tell me I should go, but I have the feeling that I would either wind up playing games with the same group of people, just in a different, less comfortable, space, or that I would find nothing of any interest and leave, having wasted the time and ticket money. Also, it's not a long drive over to Indianapolis, so I've thought that I should go to GenCon once, just to see what it's like. But I really don't want to deal with crowds, and parking, and all that.

The last dragon con I went to was fun. I met Lamar Burton, Lou Ferrigno Played a few tournaments for heroclix and MTG(the MTG one was terrible because of one person but meh) Oh I got to go to the Paizo panel and have bulmahn sign one of my books.. I think it was a bestiary but I would have to check. Had some good food. Checked out all the cosplay. Picked up some cool dice. the whole thing was pretty cool. You just have to accept that at some parts of it you will be moved around like cattle.

See, meeting celebrities doesn't have any real appeal to me, and I don't really like playing games with people I don't know (or have at least been introduced by people I know). I like to occasionally look at cosplay online, but honestly I don't recognize most of them. I already have more dice than I really need.

Yeah then probably don't go to a Con.

Yesterday Impus Minor insisted on running a one-off for us that he'd found on the interwebs.

And it was really, really fun.

He has a great head for GMing: When to let the players run amok, when to reign them in, how to describe things, etc. It was honestly an amazing bit of GMing, especially for his "first" time. (He ran a few sessions of Mummy's Mask for us, but that died rather early.)

I am impressed. Looks like I may get some relief from my eternal GMing on family game night...

When did gaslighting become a national pastime? Maybe it always has and I've been missing it all this time.

My ex gaslights me all the time, claiming issues she's clearly exacerbating with the kids are my fault.

Politics... just know its a thing on all sides.

My own siblings recently tried to gaslight me into thinking I'M the crazy one for not rebuilding a relationship with a dad who has abused me as a little kid and then shamed and tried to diminish me most of my adult life.

Last night my DM started gaslighting me. I've gone back and forth with him on issues, specifically on railroading. He is telling me that he's NOT railroading the PCs since 1. no one/nothing in game is FORCING us on the missions we've undertaken and 2. last session he gave us a roadside ruin, with no explanation, and we CHOSE to explore it so... not railroading.

Except...:
the game opened with our characters in a small town neither of them are from, at the bedside of the town's wise elder, who had mysteriously contracted a disease overnight that now had him in a coma. My character gets a phenomenal success for the system (5e) on a skill check... no diagnosis, no cure.

The other PC, a paladin, has a cure disease ability at level 1; fails. All nearby NPCs are despairing that the town will fold if the elder goes down. Elder wakens momentarily to mutter the name of a nearby ruin, which JUST HAPPENS to have a legendary magic font that can cure ANY wound or disease.

Asking around the ONLY thing the NPCs know is that there's a ruin, and the font there cures their elder. In other words, the ONLY plot hook we have as the game opens is save the elder; the ONLY solution our level 1 characters could possibly pull off is go find the magic font.

As the game has progressed we saved the elder who instantly awoke and knew everything that was going on apparently. This was followed up with the elder handing us a letter and telling us we're the ONLY mortals powerful enough to get this very important letter to the elder's associate in a city to the north.

We ask around the town again: there are no local rumors, no gossip from traders in the harbor, nothing else to indicate that ANYTHING else is going on in the game world. With no other plot hooks we head north, notice some ruins, and veer off the road to check it out. The last session ended with us saving some myconoids from some invading goblins, and we got a bunch of treasure

So as you can see from the spoiler, our 2 PCs don't have a crossbow to our heads that we HAVE to complete these missions, but after specific attempts to find OTHER plot hooks there's no other obvious things for us to do. Also, in both missions a sense of desperation and urgency are being heaped on the quests.

Despite all of this, we got a random ruin to explore so... no railroading.

Treat me like a grown up. Be honest, admit what you're doing and own it. I'd have more respect for the DM if he just stated "I'm running a linear game where I want you to work the PCs into a larger plot of helping this elder save the world from a great evil" rather than shoehorning us into this weird plot and then telling ME that I'M the one with the problem.

So... just how backwards is our IT department?

We're abandoning CrashPlan (automatically back up folders specified by the user) to, I kid you not, "Mount a networked drive and do all your work on the networked drive, and we'll back it up."

So yeah, forcing everyone to use a networked drive for all of their work has worked so well over the years that alternative backup systems are a multi-billion-dollar industry.

Speaking of IT mysteries, this one has me stumped:

Starting after a crash of my system on the afternoon of Monday, September 21, my laptop has dropped network every 5 minutes.

I've:
- Rolled back on a September 23 update
- Re-installed all my network drivers
- Run sfc /scannow (and to my surprise, it fixed a corrupt file)
- Changed out all the hardware (router, cables, etc.)
- Tested other machines on the same network, both Mac and Windows 10

I still reliably drop network every 5 minutes, almost like a heartbeat.

Seems like a timeout of some kind that got enabled by the crash, but heck if I can find it.

Any ideas?

The last Gencon I went to was in 2000 when they announced 3rd edition. I remember all us nobodies that weren't keeping up with current events were freaking out when they were like "HUGE announcement in the Great Hall!"

I ran in, super excited and BAM! There's Gary Gygax on stage, helping to roll out something called D&D 3rd Edition! I even got a shirt for attending the event.

Thing is... I'd only made the switch fully to 2e just a few years earlier. I wasn't super pumped for it. Because of that I ducked out of the hall soon after the initial announcement.

Outside I decided to cut behind the hall, across the campus and get back to the games area to try and make it early for my next event. I see this big crowd of folks crowding around a rear exit. I walk over and about 20' ahead of me, through the crowd is Gary Gygax himself!

I just remember him answering one person's question about whether to switch to 3e or not. I'm paraphrasing, my memory isn't perfect, but he just kept implying that we should play the game we want because, after all, EVERY version of D&D we play is OUR game.

Somehow, coming from Gary it was like a life lesson. Make the game your own; OWN your game. I never went back to Gencon and only started going to cons again at all when I moved to a town in MN where they hold a convention about a mile from my house.

Nowadays I go to Con of the North to network with friends and play game demos. I learned how much I love Zombicide at CotN. Otherwise the rest of any con is kind of lost on me.

I will admit, the only thing I wish I could do these days is attend Paizocon. I have no other reason than to meet Jason B and others in person and thank them, out loud, for a fantastic game. I've done so on these forums and in a letter, but It'd be nice to fanboy in person just once.

I don't need to go out for scotch with them. I don't need special DMing advice in a VIP panel. I like them for the product they gave me, not for any personal inspiration the creative team offers me.

In fact, in threads here it seems my design philosophy is often at odds with the folks that conceptualized Golarion. I'd dare say that MY PF 1e game is different than that of the original creative team.

That's ok. A guy once told me to own MY game.

I was there in 2017! And I remember there being a young woman from the Netherlands in one of the games I was playing. I wonder if we actually gamed together?
There certainly were no other dutch people, except for MrT, and he is not young. Or a woman. So it must have been me! Was it at MrSlankie's game? With Pirate Rob and the gang?

I wish I could remember!

That game doesn’t ring a bell. Were you in the Leshy game run by badger/Mike Welham?

Ah, Winter is coming, as much as it ever does around here.

How do I know?

(1) GothBard mentioned thinking about turning on the heaters.
(2) I actually closed all the windows before sunset today.

But still, it's only 65°F with a brisk breeze outside, so not even coat-worthy, and it's supposed to be back into the high 70s/low 80s over the weekend, so today's just a reminder that eventually the highs will drop into the 50s and we'll actually need to turn on the heat.

And because obsessive-compulsive, I have records like this:

2014: Heat on 11/13
2015: Heat on 11/04
2016: Heat on 10/12
2017: Heat on 10/29
2018: Heat on 10/23
2019: Heat on 10/13

So yep, it's right about the right time of year to be thinking about it...
